Lots of discussion on who it should be, Judge or Raleigh. Sure Raleigh had the most HRs ever for a switch hitter. Most HRs ever for a C. He had 7 more homers than Judge and 11 more rbi. Feats that should definitely be applauded. But let's take a deeper dive into the numbers.

He had a batting average 84 points lower.
He struck out 28 more times and walked 27 less times.
His batting average on balls in play was 128 pts lower than Judge.
His slug% was 99 pts lower and his OB% was 98 pts lower, so his OPS was almost 200 pts lower (198)

Who was more valuable to their team?

The Yankees lost Juan Soto in the off season and had the identical record they had in 2024.
The Mariners had to acquire Eugenio Suarez at the trade deadline to get them over the hump.
The Mariners were 5 games over .500, 4.5 GB in the division without Suarez and 13 games over .500, 3 games up with him.

Hey Raleigh had an awesome season and deserves all the accolades thrown his way. But he doesn't deserve the MVP over Judge.

Eh who cares, Cal still playing.

Don't worry we'll handle him in the WS for ya!

MVP also usually includes some defensive stats if it is close.

Who was more important defensively?

.331/53/114. Along with 137 runs scored. Only Ohtani scored more runs but he's in the NL. Closest in the AL is Raleigh with 110. 27 less. If its based on offense I'd say Judge is the guy. I don't know how their defenses stack up. Different positions. Kinda hard to compare. The eye test says Judge.

Its Judge hands down but Raleigh did do something special so if he gets it, so be it

And absolutely no hitting stats if a pitcher wins.

Raleigh was involved in every pitch when he wasn't the DH (he caught 121 games). Judge is a terrific outfielder. Raleigh threw out 21.2% of basestealers (down from 27.2 coming into the season). Judge had 1 assist. Judge had 1 error. Raleigh had 4. But comparing catcher to right field is a little abstract. Let's face it, if you're not a pitcher MVP it's about the hitting.

Raleigh had a great year. Most HRs ever by a catcher. Most HRs ever by a switch hitter. Kudos. He had a 7.3 offensive WAR. Judge had a 9.7.

How about baserunning? Raleigh had a 77.8% SB% (14 of 18); Judge a 70.6% (12 of 17).
But dive into the other metrics. XB% which is the times a baserunner advanced more than 1 base on a single, 2 bases on a double. Judge 36.2%; Raleigh 21.1%. Runs scoring percentage = percentage of time a baserunner scores a run. Judge 32.7%; Raleigh 25.9%.

How about fear factor?
BB%? Judge 18.3%; Raleigh 13.8%
Intentional BB? Judge 36; Raleigh 22.

And with all that, Judge had a 23.6% K percentage, Raleigh a 26.7%.

Like I said, great year; kudos. Raleigh had an MVP worthy season but Judge is in the same league and his was better.
