Agreed. However even with reaches considered and accepted due to supply/demand I think teams have adjusted board slots that account for it. So for example with Simpson they'll have him slotted somewhere with that stuff built in. Where will that be? Who the fuck knows but my guess is late first round would be the absolute earliest for him (even round 2 feels like a reach given his one starting season).Typically, QBs are overdrafted. And it definitely has something to do with that 5th year option. Tagging a LB or IOL is nowhere near as costly as tagging a QB. So if you're gonna reach, reach for a QB.
The term "reach" is subjective anyway. 32 different scouting departments, I doubt you can get 3 to totally agree on any one prospect. I've always believed, if you like a guy, better to grab him a little higher than wait and miss out on him altogether.
Some say "reach"? Fuck em. Get the guy you're committed to because of your scouting process. Like the heated debate earlier this year about the "wasted" 10 mil on Tutu, win the SB and people can say it's a waste (or that any particular pick was a reach) but if your holding the Lombardi it's irrelevant and frankly bad form.
But you're right that evaluation is subjective, and I expect McVay is only going to want the QB he has a good whiteboard bro session with. Any of these guys he doesn't hit it off with won't be in play. This is why he may end up identifying one of them that baffles us, like Klubnik for example. That's sort of what happened with Bennett, was a complete surprise to me at least.
Anyway in that adjusted board there's going to be cutoff levels with these QBs where they don't consider them in certain buckets as Les calls them. So to carry on the example if they target Klubnik (which would be kind of funny to annoy OS tbh) I'm pretty sure he won't be in consideration for late round 1. Probably talking round 3 there. Would sure love to see that board, even the early version and where they have these guys pre-slotted.
