I'll be heading to the Bahamas for about a week in mid April. We'll be based in Staniel. This is my first time, but my host has had his boat down there a few times over the last couple of years. Aside from the general watersports, fishing, and beach time, are there any things to do/see that shouldn't be missed?

I was in the Keys recently, definitely recommend snorkeling (a general watersport), but I couldn't get enough of it. Not sure if you have facial hair but mustaches really ruin your facemask's seal under your nose -- getting seawater up your nose for 60 minutes really irrigates it!!! so if you got a 'stache, shave it off before you go.
I also recommend taking dramamine, once at bedtime the night before you go out to sea & once more before you board. There's lots of other sea sickness products out there but that's what the general recommendation was.
Not sure if you live on a coast or not, but fresh fish right off the ocean is a must.

Going to that area means you'll definitely want to see the pigs swimming. There's a spot close to there where you can see them.
I used to have a place in the Bahamas. It was in a remote part... not touristy... kinda like where you will be going. Your location is much closer to Florida though so tourism will be the main concern of most of the Bahamians you'll be around.
Everything revolves around the water there so it's GREAT that your friend has a boat. Without that... there's not a lot to do otherwise.
What I would recommend is to try and eat some REAL Bahamian seafood that you may not find in the restaurants. You can eat sea turtle there but they won't admit to that in a restaurant. It's fantastic to eat the way that they cook it... plus it's cool knowing that you can't eat that anywhere else really. But try and find where the locals might eat to see about this kind of thing.
Eat a conch pistol. Just Do It. If you can't find a conch being cleaned... at least eat some fresh conch salad.
Eat the fish you catch the same day you catch it.
Wear white shirts. Colors attract more heat.
Don't be in a hurry. Everyone is on Island time there. You'll figure that out after a few days.

Basically it is.
No need to chew it much. It's kinda jelly like. You can chew it a little to break it into smaller pieces. It looks like a clear fat spaghetti noodle about 4 inches long. No real taste.

I wish I could help. But I've never been to the Bahamas. I don't get out much.
As @Selassie I said, eat true locals food. Fry fish, conch ceviche, jerk chicken.... You may have to ask repeatedly unless your buddy knows of some places. We've had to step through chain link fence a, and even open and close a gate that went through a wrecking yard to get to where the locals eat. Very worth it though. The resorts may have the "gourmet" cusine but you have to eat local to get the real flavor.
We were there for 9 days and did 13 dives. Snorkeling is great and all but being able to stay down with the fish is where it's at. Shallow dives have the most color and your bottom time is longer but deeper dives have some meet things as well - especially if you can do a wreck dive.
As @Selassie I also said.... Island time. Get used to it and accept it. NO ONE is in a hurry in the Bahamas except maybe a few taxis.
Which reminds me. I'm not all that familiar with where you'll be going specifically. But driving a rental car is a kick on the islands. Just watch out for crab crossings.
Oh... And Bahama Mamas and Hurricanes in copious amounts.

Look for a Bahamian girl named Opal. She has a warm bahamian accent that is very well enunciated, and beautiful blue eyes, a stunning contrast to her dark skin. Very rare find so you cant miss her.

Selassie at 60 years: Picking the right sun tan lotion with zinc oxide for the nose and a pool with a bar in the middle. Being pissed at night because the WiFi isn't great for moderating ROD!

Definitely check out the Atlantis.
You can pay for access to their badass pool area if you call ahead. You'll have to get over there early to pick up your wrist bands that day. They have an early cutoff time for that to prevent cruisers from being able to access the pool area and create a mob scene. It's cool af. I'd call and reserve that right now if you can.
The Atlantis also has some great restaurants. You'll need to make reservations now though if you want a table at one. Pricey but extremely good. You can party at their casino and clubs after dinner.
Other than that you'll want to do things out on the water. Whether you like fishing or snorkeling/diving... there are charters you can book. You may want to reserve that now as well if you can.
The beaches are great. Most of the hotels/resorts have the beach behind their facilities marked as private for guests only though. You can access the beach behind the Atlantis with their wrist band though.
There's a place near downtown Nassau called The Fish Fry area. You can try some Local Bahamian food there in some of the smaller places. Go to one that you see only locals going to if you want some authentic grub.
There is also a 5 Star very expensive restaurant there that is in Al Capone's old Bahamian house. I ate there with my wife on our wedding night. Pierce Brosnan (007 guy) was at the table next to us. If you're interested I'll give you the name of the place. Let me know cause it's slipping my mind right now but I can figure it out easy cause we have a piece of their china at home with their name on it. The most extravagant service I've ever had. Plus... it's in Capone's actual house.
we stayed at an AirBnB up by Montague Beach for 8 days recently and took the bus with the locals all around the island
Queens Staircase was pretty cool and can't remember the Rum factory name we toured.
Snorkeling on Pearl Island was good, rented a cabana for a day where they just bring you drinks and food all inclusive.. was 170 per person
