Talk of Clay Mathews is probably pointless because he's already passed up jobs with other teams because he's making $2.5 million off of us this season without even having to play. I'm guessing the other teams didn't offer him more than that or not substantially more so he decided it wasn't worth it. So just signing him would take substantially more than $2.5 which we don't have. Not to mention he seemed to have some beef with us in the offseason from all the whining he did so I don't think that's even a possibility.

I still hold very high hopes about Polite jrry. I just believe he needs a larger opportunity to showcase his pass-rushing skills.

Og might be having issues figuring out his new 2020 duties. He sure looked better late last season. Staley might have him thinking way too much?

The Ravens sure did not like what they saw physically after they signed Brockers earlier this year. Brockers might be showing his age & time in the pits. But he is still better than any other Ram signed DL'ers besides Donald. It might be time to dress Eric Banks.
Oko just bull rushes....no moves at all.
He does get some push usually.
But face Dak, Wentz and Allen they may have been containing them in the pocket too by design.

And how do we track them down?
Those players are always high priority come draft day. Same with OLB who have legit rushing skills.
I wanted the Rams to sign Harris from the Broncos this off season.
He basically can play 2 to 3 downs in a row before needing a rest based on their rotation.
He only signed for like $1.5 M or something.
Joseph-Day and Gaines are rotational DL.
Still growing as well.
Brockers, we will see.
Not having a first round pick really lowers the odds of tracking down a true impact pass rusher, regardless of what position they play.
You can get guys like that in round 2 & 3. This past draft there were a few that I liked that could have been had rd 2 and on. So guys like this need to be looked at next yr. Maybe just situational guys early, but guys that can contribute.

Rd 2: AJ Epenesa, Raekwon Davis, Marlon Davidson

Rd 3: Justin Madubuike, Davon Hamilton

Rd 5: Jason Strowbridge, Aldon Robinson

Tim Jernigan for the DL with Donald and then part of a rotation if/when Robinson comes back.

And at linebacker there are a few out there if be ok with Kendricks.

Also some decent corners if needed. The bargain bin could provide some help and Prince akukamara (spelling)?

I'm trying to be optimistic about where this defense could be given time. It has to be difficult trying to establish a new system with this offseason.

That said, there are some glaring issues on that side of the ball. I can't see how one unproven rookie - coming off injury no less - is going to make a dynamic difference. Looking at this LB corps you can see why the Rams draft brains were willing to take a gamble on Lewis, though. I knew LB was going to be an issue - we might have 1.5 starters currently in that unit (Kiser and Floyd).

I also maybe had too much hope that Staley would bring a more aggressive approach as well - I was not a great fan of Phillips' zone schemes at times, and although he did a great job in the SB, there were too many games like the Tampa Bay and Baltimore losses. I expected our secondary to be dominant, too, between Ramsey and Johnson and what seemed like a promising group of young players. If we didn't have Donald this D would be among the league's worst in terms of pass rush and we're currently 18th in rushing yards allowed (six yards worse than 2019). I don't know who was out there or what McVay was looking for on that side of the ball when he chose Staley, but so far the defense is worrisome. Hopefully they'll look better in the next stretch of games.

Like an earlier poster mentioned, I also wonder about Ramsey a bit. Great talent, but he's a man-to-man corner. If you're mainly playing a soft zone, I think I would almost have rather had those two #1 picks to spend on a speedy edge and a run-thumping ILB. A soft zone and no consistent rush isn't a winning combo. I hope this next draft or two sees us looking at O-line a bit and defense a lot.

Ending on a positive note, we are currently in the upper half on points allowed (#13). The last two times we finished in the top ten we went to the SB ('99 and '01) so maybe there's some hope there.

This is what concerns me. I get Staleys scheme is primarily zone, but it seems like our secondary is better in man. And at least in man coverage on the plays we lock down their WRs it will give extra time for the pass rush to get home, resulting in more coverage sacks. With no pass rush and all the soft zone coverage I dont know how we won't get picked apart by the elite offenses. Staley seems like a smart guy so I hope he makes the necessary changes to get us on track. I sure hope T Lewis stays healthy :hope:because he will have a significant impact for sure. Hes a better pass rusher than Floyd.

I don't consider Ramsey to be a man-to-man corner. He's an elite all around corner and can play anything you scheme up.

But his game vs the Bills was some bullshit. He needs to be the guy showing discipline in playing the calls. Freelancing is fine at times to make plays on the ball but he's the example back there for the corner group. That's the prob too with how talented he is... When he does have a bad game it's gonna stand out.

I also have to think he's going to come out pissed vs the Giants so I feel for whoever he draws.

I'm still a fan of Polite @flv . I'm sorry, but neither Ebukam nor Okoronkwo are the answer - and I like both of them as people. But Polite and Lewis were first-round talents in their respective draft classes; they had issues that forced them into the third round (Polite being character; Lewis being injuries).

Polite is talented, and he can at least rush the passer. I don't see why he can't get the job on the blindside.

I am not going to put much expectation this year who was mostly injured during his collegiate year and now the start of his pro career. Add the covid and i dont expect alot

TLew is back at practice and the Rams have 21 days to activate him or IR him. Looks like he could be ready for the Whiners game.

The Rams placed rookie Terrell Lewis on the reserve/non-football injury list just before Week
one sidelining him for at least three weeks. The Rams had Lewis undergo a knee scope after there were concerns about a possible infection from a previous surgery.

Lewis can be added to the 53-man roster this week, but it doesn’t sound like that will happen. The Rams have taken the first step toward activating him, however, opening the 21-day window for him to be taken off the NFI list on Wednesday.
Sean McVay said Lewis can begin practicing this week, though it’s unclear if he will or how much he’ll do.
Rams HC Sean McVay said OLB Terrell Lewis this week will enter the 21-day window that will allow for the team to decide whether to remove him from Reserve/Non-Football Injury List. McVay is not sure yet if Lewis will practice today.

The Rams have three weeks to decide whether to activate Lewis fully to the 53-man roster. If they decide not to, he’ll miss the remainder of the season and stay on the NFI list. It’s hard to imagine the team taking that path with the rookie edge rusher, considering the situation and the Rams’ need for pass-rush help.

I just go back to that Niner game last season when he & Rapp both got caught on the Line on 3rd & 16.

Then I didn’t record the Bills game, but knew there was a 4th & 22. Rapp made the tackle, but how do The Rams give that play up ? Aaron Donald was going off. My thoughts are Staley is doing good down & distance,so The defense steps up when needed.

I still will keep saying Clay should be a Ram 2020. That was the deal,Gurley is(was) a different story.
Same as John Sullivan last season, but the Corbett trade was amazing. Then again the experience Evans & Edwards got was priceless. —Brewer 2021 is like already having a Bigtime Comp pick.

Point being Lewis was & is worth any risk the his VALUE in GOLD.

Where do you get talent & need like T.Lewis ? Imo - he is like a MAN-CHILD
He fills that #52 Jersey well.

There is absolutely nothing that makes me crazier than watch the Rams play that soft ass zone coverage. It is like someone once said, it is like being pecked to death by chickens, I told my wife Sunday during the 4th quarter, "if the Rams lose this game I'm not watching them again this season".

He's no Tommy Polley.

I liked downtowns interview with Tommy. I think I remember where I was when listening to it. OC Court house parking lot? Anyway there some cool insight from ex players that goes back in time.

I like the direction the organization is going now.Looking back you see what happens when things are not run right.

FSU - Cam Akers. The Bowden days are over.
