People overlook how good he played in 2018 (short memories i guess). The difference was he was behind a good OL. Go back and look at the Monday night game vs KC or the NFC Championship Game.

This is not the same offense. McVay by his own admission says he changed it to better tailor it to Stafford's strengths, something he refused to do with Goff. This is a circular argument and meaningless at this point. Haters will be haters for whatever reason, ignoring that Stafford makes the same mistakes when pressured. All that is important is that Stafford is McVay's shiny new toy and it's obvious that Sean can win with Stafford. Let us hope that Stafford can now deliver the Super Bowl win for us all.

I have no ill will for either Goff or Stafford. They simply are two different QBs with different strengths and weaknesses.
I agree but the difference is how amazingly well Stafford handles the blitz. Goff was not even close to Stafford's level in that respect. I was lukewarm on the trade until the playoffs, always saying the two seemed rather close, certainly not two 1st rounders apart, but that I would reserve judgement until the playoffs, because that is what we got Stafford for. Could he raise his game and stop all the crazy turnovers? Put us on his back when needed? Make the big throws when we need them? I think the answer now is a resounding YES. He is proving all the naysayers wrong, and all the fence-sitters stupid (myself included). Goff did a lot of that stuff too when he had protection. But Stafford is a cut above.

Nah.. it's not haters.
Goff was fantastic. Defenses learn and adjust. The adjustments made have exposed certain limitations in Goff's game. Once in a while, he'll explode, and it's fun to see. But he's a journeyman QB.

You are overlooking the numbers being put up by the two in the playoffs... and it's not even close.

I don't hate Goff even a little.. and his best games were an absolute fucking joy to watch.

But, there is no doubt, at all.. that Stafford is a clear level above Goff. If the Rams win the SB, Stafford's entire career will be re-examined and put into new context. He's been incredible.

Why do people keep saying this? Goff was McVay's QB for 4 years. He tried to develop him, it eventually didn't work out.

Anyways, back to Stafford, I love this man, and I want to give Detroit an extra 1st round draft pick in appreciation of the gift they gave us. He was more than worth it!
Yeah, it's a lazy narrative. McVay developed Kirk Cousins into a pro bowl QB. He developed Goff into a pro bowl QB. He's kept Wolford and Perkins around who he is developing. If he didn't want to develop anyone he'd bring in a veteran to be a backup.

When the ceiling was reached McVay didn't think it was enough to win a Super Bowl with so he traded for one he thought could. McVay doesn't fuck around with typical conventions of having to stay with one guy because he has a big cap number or years have been spent developing him. If he thinks development ceiling has been reached and that ceiling isn't good enough he moves on. It's actually a very good trait for a coach to have if they want to survive in this league long term.

Yes, yes, yes.

And... and if the season didn't just hammer home how right the decision was, you're simply in denial or not paying attention.

Ask the 9ers or Colts if they would've paid as much as the Rams did, if not more, for Stafford. Probably a few other teams as well.

Anyone listen to the Flying Coach podcast this offseason? Oh. So. Fitting.

Money quote:

"You don't want to get me started, dude," Shanahan told Rams coach Sean McVay and Peter Schrager. "That was frustrating. I was in Cabo. I was studying it all. ... I remember looking through it because everybody was telling me it was a possibility. Stafford's the man. I studied him hard coming out of college, and you always play against him, so you know how good he is. But to know he might be available and to spend two weeks really watching him, Sean, yeah, he's better than I realized.

"He was the man. He's actually underrated to me. I know how good of a guy you got. I know how good he is at play action. I know how smart he is. Not only does he just have a big arm, but he's got touch, he knows where to go with the ball. So I was trying to get involved in it."

I thought this at the time, and now believe it even more certainly: the Niners traded for Lance because we traded for Stafford

Yeah this is the truth. We basically gave up 2 first round picks to jump out of development and into expertise at the position. Say what you want about Stafford but he's seen a lot and he picked up the offense very quickly. I also think he is finally in something resembling real command, where he doesn't look like he's thinking at all.

His grasp of threats pre-snap is so good. It's hard to surprise him. What gets him are stunts and if the Rams run the ball enough that stuff doesn't happen. But also the OL has gotten better and better at stunts. Not even in 2018 do I recall the OL working through some of them the way this unit just did vs SF. Bosa and Armstead are nasty as hell on stunts, particularly Bosa on the crossover with big 91 pushing the OG back. That play I put up stills on I had to watch many times just out of appreciation.

But anyway back to the QB it's like he survived the baptism by fire and just has to dunk that shit now. That's how it feels to me at least.

There's no doubt. Niners were very in on the Stafford sweepstakes, and after we landed him they knew they had to make a move in response. Little did they think Lance wouldn't be ready in year 1 and Shanny had to roll with Jimmy for another year.

I personally still think Lance will be a very good player especially given that system and coach, but we obviously got the better guy. They guy that they wanted too. And we gave up less for Stafford. With Brady retired and Rodgers likely leaving the NFC, we are now in a window where we can win a few SBs. We'll be the favorite to win the NFC next year and Stafford will be entering year 2 of this system. But it all starts with playing our next football and getting it done next week.

2... actually 3 things just occurred to me more or less at once:

We're a week away from the fucking Superbowl.

We only have one more game this season to enjoy the badassedness that is Matt Stafford.

I knew Stafford was good. I had no idea what I was talking about though because he's been better than I expected and flat out heroic down the stretch of big games.

Dudes a legend.

McVay did tailor the offense to Goff giving him easier reads and throws because he couldn’t handle the entire package.

They came out and admitted it earlier this season. It was in an article someone (I think Merlin, but could be wrong) posted. I commented on it because there was an argument about it when someone suggested the idea before.

Yeah, this is a great article, perhaps deserving of its own thread.

A lot of posters have been critical of McVay, especially in relation to getting "outcoached" by Shanahan the last 3 years.

But when the chips were down and McVay and Shanahan were competing to get Stafford, McVay found a way to swoop in and get the deal done before Shanahan could even come up with an offer.

HC is the whole package of course. For those who want to purely focus on X's and O's, go ahead and make a case for Shanny if ya want. But when it comes to creating an atmosphere that's appealing to elite vets-- and recruiting them here-- McVay clearly has the edge.

Nah.

The trade's proven to be worth it. Look at what that first 1st rounder is worth right now. And look at Stafford's post season performance.

If you're falling on the "not worth it" side.. for any reason.. right now, I'd ask you to present your method of solving the QB dilemma.

If you recall, Reese explained to Ricky later in the movie that he was high when he said that'; and that
'You can be second, you can be third, fourth ... hell, you can even be fifth!'

Wise man that Reese Bobby. May have done a little too much Peyote though.

Remember when Goff had someone wide open in the endzone against the pats in the Superbowl but he put too much air under it and the db was able to get back and knock the ball away. With Stafford, that's a rope and a touchdown.

And Stafford would have also been able to make the adjustments that Goff failed to make despite seeing that defense in Chicago.

If Stafford was a ram that day, we win that game, and if Goff was playing 10 points down against the niners last week, we lose.

LOL. Haters are losers who take backhanded shots at out current QB because they can't get rid of the boner they have for our not so current QB. Simple as that. I don't see anybody "hating" on Goff. Some of you are just too emotional, haha....
