I wouldn't change one thing about McVay. Fuck with the mix and you might not like the result. That competitive drive is what makes him special I think.

I'm not 100% sure we are talking about the same thing.
I'm talking about how devastated Mcvay and the players looked after this one.
Go back and watch the presser from last year = mcvay has some of the same lines, but he is not as emotional as this one.
Stafford was pissed he basically refused to recap some plays when the reporter asked him - never seen him do that before.
Sure you lose the last game... in every season it makes you upset - this one was more so.
Some of the guys on ESPN LA who were in the locker room also commented on how they had never seen such a devasted locker room.

The Rams can only control what they do. If Smith let the ball go the game would have been completely different. All I know is the Rams wouldn't have been in a 11 point hole. They would have been driving to take the lead.

IMO, the game was lost in about 6 minutes of game time. 1:33 left in the first half. Before the half, run the ball 3 times or if you throw a pass, make it a screen or something easy. Go into halftime with a 13-10 lead. But we got cute, punted and went into halftime down 17-13. Then the defense forces a 3 and out and not sure what happened, but Smith who's been solid, misjudged the punt stumbles and tries to catch the ball on his back instead of rolling away and letting the ball bounce away from him. That resulted in a TD.
That's 14 easy points. The Rams win if they play well in those 6 minutes.

Offense needed to be a maximum efficiency to overcome the turnover and a really POOR DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE.

I hope McVay learns and adapts from this one. He made a comment at one point I think before the game saying he was impressed that Macdonald understood how important it is to be sound in all 3 phases.
The reality is defenses win championships. I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that we have one of the worst defenses in the league, at least the 2nd half of the year.

It's possible for 2 things to be true at the same time.
McVay is a fantastic coach technically, strategically and motivationally, but he is not a proficient game manager, clock manager, and makes questionable decisions about whether to gamble on 4th down. These deficiencies repeatedly showed up throughout the season and cost games.
I never said that McVay doesn't value secondary play, but this season the coaching staff severely overestimated the competence of our defensive backs and the Rams didn't adequately address the secondary at the trade deadline, even after it became apparent how poor our defensive backfield was.
The result was our unwillingness to blitz out of fear of exposing our secondary to explosive plays, our overreliance on soft zones, and the need to give large cushions to opposing receivers.

I don't know much......don't have a 150 IQ......don't have a medical degree.....don't have a law degree.....but I do know this much..........9 years, 7 postseasons, 2 Conference Championships, 1 Lombardi, 35 assistant coaches lost to other teams, 5 top 10 offenses, runner up offensive and defensive rookies of the year, actual defensive rookie of the year, 3 time defensive player of the year and quite probably NFL MVP, doesn't happen on a shit team with a head coach who doesn't know what he's doing or doesn't know how to call plays.

Not sure I agree defenses win championships in this NFL. It's an offensive league. And this Rams offense has went into that hostile road environment, in Seattle, 2 games in a row now, against the best defence in the league, which everyone going into the game was so convinced was almost impossible to move the ball on, let alone score on... and absolutely dog walked them. I think offense wins championships in the modern NFL, and the Rams have been correct to focus disproportionately on that side of the football... but it's still a team sport with 3 phases to it (offense, defense, special teams)... even if you're offense is great, you can't roll out the league's worst defense AND league worst special teams - and that is exactly what were doing, at least statistically, down the stretch - and expect to win games.
I love Snead and McVay but they do deserve some serious and very fair criticism for it. Nobody is above evaluation. If the Rams would have even been halfway competent in those areas, we'd be Super Bowl Champs. Instead, Seattle will be because despite focusing on 1 side of the football - they chose defence - they didn't allow the other sides of the football to become complete and total liabilities.
Of our top 3 draft picks last year, 2 were on offence. Ferguson and Hunter. Both were complete non factors. 1 couldn't even make hte active roster on game days. I am hopeful for Ferguson and I get the succession planning idea with Higbee aging, but there were clearly bigger priorities, by pick 46 you're not getting a generational player you simply can't pass on either. Same with Hunter at RB. You're in a Super Bowl window. A pick that high has to at least contribute, if you want a pure depth/development RB to slot in as RB3 draft in later in the draft, there are always some available at RB in the later rounds. If we drafted two players that could have started in the secondary instead of Ferguson and Hunter, are we even having this conversation? Our 7th round pick Konata Mumpfield looks like a JAG to me. Who knows. Maybe he proves me wrong. He's still a rookie, and by round 7, a JAG is not unsurprising... why not draft a special teams ace instead for once? Why is every late round pick a hail mary?

So I think the consensus is tweak the offense by adding another weapon/OL depth, go ALL IN on strengthening the defense (especially CB/LB) and find a coach who can remove the ST blunders.

This was a great and entertaining season.
Like all seasons, there were moments of frustration.....sometimes those "moments" lasted for a couple of consecutive weeks.
Stafford, against the odds, had the best season of his storied career.
The same issue that hampered the Rams all year continued in the NFCG.
Special Teams and the back end of the defense.
It seemed there was confusion in coverage quite a bit. Having Smith Hyphen running wide open is pretty bad.
Even with the errors the Rams were one play from taking the lead with 3 minutes left.
This team was very resourceful and had tremendous fight and grind.
That said, they were their own worst enemies.
Smith's fumble was crushing and really, the only special teams gaff left that the team hadn't have happen.
There were some strange moments.
Having Rivers in for the first time in weeks on a key third down was very strange.
The fourth down pass was supposed to go the Williams and according to McVay the coverage sort of lucked into a double on Williams, so, Stafford was forced to Ferguson, who was covered.
Parkinsons drop on that short pass, with perfect touch from Stafford, was brutal as well. A first down and possible touchdown dropped on a gimme pass.
Blown opportunities.
Stafford was outstanding once again.
A team that plays with such tight margins eventually runs out of time in one of these game.
Sadly, it was the NFCG.
Eventually, when a team is being carried for weeks by one or two players, eventually, the QB isn't able to carry the whole team.
Good year.
Disappointing finish, which is like 31 other teams I suppose.
Seattle vs NE......I think it will be a good day to go to the movies....
