Gruden working remotely, but it gets him back out there. Now that gives him an opportunity to become an OC for somebody next year as I don't believe he would take the job with the Rams because McVay calls the plays, but with all the OC's being given jobs under McVay especially if Liam Coen gets one, you might see Jay Gruden as the next OC in L.A., however, more likely to be paired with a defensive coach who gets a head coaching gig.
What I love about Coach McVay is he's never stuck in his thinking. He will inevitably take that next step to allowing someone else to call his offense. And I would think if Jay kicks ass for him in his role, which I assume is going to be quality control, i.e. analyzing the Rams offense for tells and tendencies and maybe opponents as well from outside the circle, then he will certainly get consideration to replace Coen.

So if that were to happen Jay would be ideal as a guy to be the one McVay trusts to run his offense. It would have a wholesome "comes around goes around" type feel to it. Or maybe McVay keeps him on the outside as a resource and the Rams pay him for that. I think either would be viable. Jay certainly is an excellent OC.

This might end up being much more valuable than many think....McVay may be the main beneficiary of this union.

I need to remember that these two coaches did very well together, especially in producing a potent running game @ Washinton.

Running game assistance was my first thought about this hire.

Also for Gruden it would be his best or only shot to become relevant again and get another chance at a HC job.

I mean if he becomes the OC and they continue to put up points and he takes on more responsibility than past McVay OC's while they make deep playoff runs, he may get another shot.

So McVay unloads some responsibility to improve his work/life balance to prevent burnout and Gruden can jump start his career again.

Win win.

We are witnessing the best football situation for the rams. who are In L.A. after Anaheim and St. louis. we have a winning and amazing young head coach who is peppering the league with talented coaches that he vetted. frustrating yes, but still impressive. we have an amazing general manager who is young and compliments the coach. An owner who supports the process and built one of the best stadiums for his team. win or lose we all win. It is fun to watch, from training camp to hopefully the Superbowl. go rams.

Getting his friend back working even if it's in a limited basis so next year he can at worst get an OC job. Just my opinion on the hire.
May be part of the reason for the hire, But a much smaller part of it.
The biggest reason for the hire is Gruden can really help us.

I like it - another set of eyes on tape is great. Keep the workload manageable and McVay will coach longer!

Surprised Jay isn't working elsewhere in the league. Fallout from Jon's crap?? Name association?

No, I don't think so. Because he's remote he's probably more giving feedback and watching tape (Looking for tells, etc.), as opposed to being in the day-to-day operations.

McVay has a lot of confidence in Coen, which Coen has earned.

I am sure McVay has a solid plan. Could be some pre-scouting teams to post-game evaluation and everything in between when it comes to film study. Gruden even has a little history with Morris IIRC. Besides his football knowledge, he can help McVay in with the mental challenges as a friend.

Good point! I'm all for anything or anyone who can help to keep Coach Mac from burning the midnight oil and to remain fresh and rested so he can have a long career as our HC.

Great point, that was overlooked by myself and others.
Mcvay needs McLOVIN' time just as much as the next man. :giggle:

I wanted to revive this thread. So we hired Jay Gruden... And our offense has an outting probably the worst since we faced the Ravens two seasons ago.

Do we actually think his hiring is going to benefit the Rams? Because last night I saw an offense that looked stale and bland. I guess its hard to.run any scheme when you're getting blown up play after play.

I think it's mostly due to rust with starters, mixing in new OL and Stafford rust.
