2) subtract said money from available cap space
3) Sit back with popcorn and watch front offices work voodoo on both those numbers
4) let them tell you at the end it makes sense and they're under the cap

After the Super Bowl the Saints were the most over the cap something like $80 million. Today? They're 10th most open cap space with almost $25 million. Sure supports my voodoo theory with it being New Orleans.

I am not saying this is accurate but to try and provide some context, here are some Spotrac numbers.

Yesterday, Woods carried a 2022 cap hit of $15.7M for the Rams.

Spotrac has already taken Woods off the roster but there is $8.6M of dead-$.

The difference is $7.1M, which would be the 2022 cap savings.

$7.1M of cap-relief might not seem like much but consider that the combined 2022 cap-hits of Noteboom, Allen and Shelton is only $6.8M. The way the Rams structure big-contracts, the first-year cap-hit is usually very low. The Rams might be able to do something significant with an additional $7.1M.

Spotrac could be wrong. Just saying that the Rams did not trade Robert Woods for only a 2023 6th round pick. They traded him for a 6th round pick in 2023 AND cap relief in 2022.

Exactly.....And factor in the Stafford contract don't know how exactly that is structured but that one should be significant.

Bingo, this is the only thing that mattered when it came to getting a 6th round pick back. If Woods was making $7-10M then we would have gotten a high round pick back. $16M for a 30yr old WR coming off an ACL is not cheap. As good as Woods is it makes sense.

Not just you but I'm reading this a lot. He'll be 30 in a month coming off an acl injury with a roster bonus due and a contract that escalates in a couple of years. If not for the injury and the contract we absolutely could have gotten more for Woods. But those two factors are huge and drive the compensation way down. If we traded him after paying the roster bonus we get a better pick.

Last year I and others were beat to hell for questioning McSnead, and were throughout the season, now a lot of the same people are questioning McSnead for 1 trading Woods and 2 for not getting what they feel we should have.

I love Robert Woods and will always appreciate what he did for the Rams. But this deal makes sense unfortunately.

... but there were posts exactly like this one to explain why moving on from Bruce after adding a "younger, bigger target" outside to replace him.

Whatever benefits the team got from it back then, it wasn't worth it. His presence in the locker room alone was worth his contract. That's when one small change to the chemistry can fuck up everything.

Now, I don't believe this is a bad move or bad business... but I just don't like it.
Losing Whitworth, Hekker and Woods in one offseason?
That's a megaton of invaluable leadership and character. The truth is nobody knows if we will regret this or not and there's no way for me to just believe that it won't come back to bite us...

I don't know if he's on the decline or not but he just suffered a torn ACL and is 30. I don't think they're gambling AT ALL with Robinson.
You don't pay a guy 15 million if you're just worried about depth. You go out and get a cheap vet late in the FA cycle... Think something like what Emmanuel Sanders got last season.

Woods brought a lot to the table, but apart from getting Robinson I think Stafford was developing a better rapport with OBJ. OBJ has a greater ability to get open one on one and make big plays. Just from the way the Super Bowl was going I suspect he could have been the MVP if he hadn't gotten hurt.

How does a guy who was going to cost us 15.7 mil in cap space this year, gets traded away, and still costs us 8.6 mil in cap space.

Makes this deal feel not as good by a long shot for me.

It's the bonus money he was given last yr that gets spread out over the length of his contract in regards to the cap number. Once traded, you accelerate the remaining unaccounted for bonus money into this yrs cap.

That’s why I could never fault him if he said he was retiring tomorrow if he had enough. it’s days like this when I consider with utter derision, my user name. It's all about the 7 mil benjamins. Ho-hum, Rams will draft another WR now.

Another Tutu or Benny Skow? Maybe they’ll have better luck finding a Tight End. Or the can fast track Harris to the world of playing NFL wide receiver.

Maybe it was necessary but it was clear last winter that the offense was not the same after Woods was injured.

Robert Woods is a consummate professional and he gave the Rams everything he had. He is a clutch receiver, a great blocker, he could run after the catch, and he was a leader on the field. He will be missed. This was purely a salary dump.

I looked at his contract and figured there would be little market for him right now, but the timing of his release (right after the stafford extension) makes sense. Woods becomes less affordable after stafford's backloaded extension starts kicking (during the last two years of Woodys contract). Les probably figured that he could trade him now or have to cut in after next season. Easy choice.

And we absolutely need another edge and CB 100%. There's still a lot of talent out there in FA. I'm sure losing out on Von made us pivot rather quickly to plan B.

Shame they only got a future sixth, but for Tennessee to take the contract and to do right by Woods, it feels like they did that. And they still have Jefferson, Atwell, Harris, and (maybe) OBJ.

All three of those were and are great guys and leaders/teammates. But don't act like those are the only ones. It's also very possible guys are ready to step up and be leaders as well.

The biggest one I see stepping up is AD. There was a lot of talk lately about the affect Von had on him and how he became a different leader after Von arrived. Here's a clip right here where one of those leaders talk about the evolution of AD. McVay has built a culture and fostered the growth of the players. I think Hav steps up on the OL and takes that captain role of Whits. I think Stafford in his 2nd year takes a bigger leap as well.
