Crosby was 24 out of 25 last year inside 49yds. 37 of 39 on XP.

I dunno if it was the misses or that he outright had two shanks in two games and thus really didn’t inspire confidence. Missing by a little is one thing. Shanking big hooks is quite another.
He also seemed to not follow through on the last 50 yarder, like a pitcher aiming instead of throwing. His confidence looked totally shot to me.

I'd rather just go with the younger kicker, to be honest.

Maher's issue seems to be that when he misses, it gets in his head, and they end up coming in bunches.

A "Kicker tryout competition" has limited value.

Tryouts in an empty stadium just can't compare to the real thing with all the pressure of 70,000 screaming fans and millions more watching at home.

Kickers man.

I suppose if we are truly in rebuilding mode, then trying out the young kicker in real games makes sense.

However, if can beat the Cowboys I think that signifies we are legit going to be able to make a wildcard run of it, based on the schedule.

In that scenario you maybe go with the proven vet Crosby. He should be able to kick a few more years for the duration of the Kupp and Donald Rams Careers.

I don't know, Kickers man. Don't ask me. Kickers are weird bro.

One year they make a pressure 53 yard kick to send you to the Super Bowl. The next year they can't make a 33 yard PAT.

When you find a really good one you should pay them and not be a cheapskate about it.

Worst mistake of the offseason was not resigning Gay. As bad as last year was he was rock solid

2024 & 2025 cap hit is really high but the TV contract went way up in those years so the CAP increase significantly more than offset Gay's cap hit.
If this truly a re-set year, then having a top-tier place-kicker may not be important for 2023.

If the Rams want to be a contender in 2024 and beyond, they will need a top-tier place-kicker.

They had one; and Matt Gay will need to be replaced. It just isn't easy to find a top-tier-PK.

Were the Rams thinking about their future when Matt Gay left via free agency?

That's the question.

Now it is Free Agency. Maybe the Rams made a good offer but Gay wanted to go to Indianapolis. Maybe the Rams rated Gay as a quality place-kicker but not top-tier. These are the things we do not know for certain.

I don't know but I still think it was a BIG mistake.
