Only missed 21 snaps in 7 seasons
Oh he missed some snaps....Just saw the Seattle game again....wow..JL55 is a shell of himself.

Ron Clements ‎@Ron_Clements
Whoa. Three of their best players.
Ron doesn't know our team AT ALL.

Needed move....expected it...and hopefully it's the start of a successful offseason....now bring back our corners and get a QB

I'd like to say THANK YOU for some great memories both Chris and James, both of whom will always be among my favorite players. I feel terrible for them, but it is what it is right? As to Jared, go darken some other team's door with your soulless performance.

Hopefully they are serious about keeping most of those defensive FAs. I expect that now, along with hot pursuit of a WR and maybe TE. I gotta think they go after Fleener, and one wideout to ensure they have enough in the passing game. Either way, hit it hard and heavy dudes.

I'm looking at all the comments on this and it's amazing how many people want all 3 players on their teams.

Damn we got a lot of cap space now! I believe the 3rd or 4th most in the NFL after this. Lets resign our young stars! I hope they spend some of that money on JPP from the Giants. You put Quinn Donald and JPP on the same line and QBs will just curl up into the fetal position after the ball is snapped.

Wow.

I expected Cook of course--and I thought Long was a possibility but I never saw JL being released.

I will miss Long--I know his production dropped but he seemed like the kind of guy you want on your team. I understand releasing JL but he was solid for many years. I wish them both luck.

As for Cook---they can only upgrade. He was a huge disappointment.

Never expected Eugene Sims, Lance Kendricks, and Rodger Saffold to be the last guys in contract under the Spags regime.

(Updated) Rams release Laurinaitis, Long, Cook
• By Ben Frederickson

Two of the longest-tenured St. Louis Rams were released by the now-Los Angeles Rams in a move that went beyond mere salary cap measures on Friday.

Linebacker James Laurinaitis and defensive end Chris Long have been let go, along with tight end Jared Cook, the team announced.

The moves save the Rams $22.975 million in salary cap space, broken down as follows: Long ($11.75 million), Cook ($5.7 million), Laurinaitis ($5.525 million).

Even before Friday's moves the Rams already were swimming in salary cap space, with only $118 million committed towards the 2016 cap in what is expected to be a cap of $155 million. So that's $37 million of salary cap space alone, far more than the Rams had in any of their 21 offseasons in St. Louis.

Throw in about $6 million in leftover 2015 cap room that can be carried over to 2016 at the start of the league year next month. plus the $22.975 million saved by releasing Long, Laurinaitis, and Cook _ and that gives the Rams roughly $66 million in cap space.

So yes,, it looks like the team plans to make a big free-agent splash as it enters its first year back in southern California.

“This is the time of year when all NFL teams are faced with difficult decisions regarding their veteran players,” coach Jeff Fisher said in a statement released by the team. “Chris and James are the epitome of what it means to be a pro in this league and it’s been an honor to coach them both. They’ve been the pillars of our defense for many years and not enough can be said of their love for the game and for their teammates.

"Beyond the field, they took pride in mentoring the younger players and doing their part to make a real difference in the St. Louis community. We will always be grateful for James and Chris’ unselfish commitment to the Rams and wish them the best moving forward."

Long posted the following message to his Instagram page:

"Just heard that I'm about to be unemployed. I just want to personally and humbly thank the city of St. Louis again for all your support over 8 years. I love y'all so much for sticking with me through the ups and downs.

"I also want to thank our LA fans, and although I may never join you in SoCal, just know that I'll always appreciate you.

"Bottom line is, this is a production business. No excuses, the last two years have been (bleep). It's been painful to experience because I care deeply about my performance and my responsibility to my teammates. Before the last two years I'm very proud of what I was able to accomplish in St. Louis. I'm not surprised, but it doesn't make it any easier to leave your family.

"I look forward to the next chapter. Hungry and a lot to prove all over again. First I'm gonna have a beer. "

Long, drafted second overall by the Rams in 2008, started 95 of 114 games during his career. He recorded more than 300 tackles and 54.5 sacks. He led the team in sacks in 2011 and 2012.

Laurinaitis, a Ram since the second round of the 2009 draft, led the team in tackles through his first four seasons. Last season, he became the franchise's all-time leading tackler.

Cook joined the Rams as a free agent during the 2013 offseason, but never became the playmaker Rams fans hoped. He did set franchise records for most receiving yards by a tight end in a single season (672 in 2013) and in a single game (141 vs. Arizona on Sept. 8, 2013). He totaled 142 receptions for 1,786 yards and eight touchdowns as a Ram.

“Jared made an immediate impact when he joined the team in 2013," Fisher said. "It’s been a pleasure watching him grow from the time I drafted him in Tennessee to seeing him set franchise records in St. Louis. Like Chris and James, he’s been a mainstay in the community and his contributions are commendable. We hope for the best for Jared and his family as he embarks on the next steps of his career.”

DE Eugene Sims is no longer under a Rams contract. As far as leadership if you recall many Rams said that DL'er William Hayes had that role well covered. The Chris Long release looks favorable for a Hayes return:love:.

The release of JL was a need. JL was no longer capable of continuing his previous role in Gregg's defense. I believe the very big element here & it sends a big sign that Snead/Fisher will do as they said earlier that they want the play-making abilities of WSLB'er Mark Barron back in his starting role along with Alec Ogletree as the two outside starting Lbers in 2016. Rams plays most of the time with only two LBers anyway in the 4-2-5. As far as to who will take up the part time role position @ MLB'er in the base 4-3-4 defense?? They do have three who could do that. Akeem Ayers played inside for the Pats, last yrs drafted rookie MLB'er in Bryce Hager and the MLB'er big hitter from Syracuse Cameron Lynch.

Rams will try to sign TE/FB Cory Harkey to replace TE Jared Cook to go with Lance Kendricks & Justice Cunningham.

Having $66 million in cap space can put them in a position to out bid many other teams to secure a decent veteran starting QB while drafting one in this yrs draft. I still say that a veteran QB like Ryan Fitzpatrick could hold the LA Fort down & win ;) until the youngsters are ready.

Holy shit. I take a nap for a few hours after work and wake up to this?

Gonna miss Long and Jlau. Think Long still has a lot left in the tank if he can stay healthy. Jlau was solid but declined, will still miss him though.

Not bummed about Cook in the slightest.

After the GSOT I've only been wearing jerseys of retired players. Of course I haven't been wearing many jerseys at all these days. Just T-shirts and hats.

Many thanks to Chris Long and James Lauranitis, two Ram leaders for several difficult years, and great guys overall. I don't know why the NFL allows teams to lose their most popular players every year. This hurts the fans, and you would think that fact alone would be enough to get the owners and players to design a solution so that teams can keep their players. That said, those guys made a ton of money over the last few years... especially Long. I know, I know... it's a business.

Not particularly shocked by this.

As many have said before: Cook was the easy cut. His production wasn't even worth the vet minimum. I may be in the minority but I actually think we upgrade by giving Kendricks his snaps or simply by drafting a guy. (Though Kendricks too needs to work on his hands).

I think we all knew Long was a goner. Too much money for a declining player. Love what he meant to the team with his leadership but resigning Hayes for a decent price is an upgrade over him. (We do need depth there now though).

JL was a tiny surprise only - and I mean only - because I'm not sure Ogletree can shine at MLB. He's always been an above-average player who's overpaid for his intangibles and leadership. I didn't realize his play had declined so much this year though. Like many have said, I think this means they go hard after Barron for WLB. He was a revelation there.
