Danielle Hunter is a dude, but he's getting up there in age.

We all know I'm a dumbass, so I'd much rather take a cheaper flier on someone like Chase Young. Fits our youth movement more.

The difference is that Danielle Hunter is a STUD and Chase Young is all potential no production with significant injury concerns.

If we were all about that, we'd still have Terrell Lewis...

I'm not thinking about it. If we spend it and sign someone long term great. If we're able to turn it into an improved pick, great (6th round to get and get a 5th in comp), and if we carry the cap into next year, great.

Apparently, we've already signed Avila, Young and Turner, so that would put us at 47 iirc not including UDFAs, so it may be less than $3M if the UDFAs are included for that 51 player threshold.

Either way, this move isn't a move to clear cap for another player. This team is gonna play conservatively this year with depth seeing as they got schooled hard on that last season with historic levels of injuries to multiple units.
They have been at 70 plus players for awhile now wuth the UDFA signings. So picks in the first 4 rounds are likely in the top 51.

The late 5ths and beyond likely are not or a wash in terms of little to no difference.

So 4 players deals will count against the cap minus the $750K x 4 for the players they replace in the top 51 salaries.

So if those top 4 picks total $6M in salary/cap hit for 23'... the cap implications would be 6M - (750K x 4)

So 6M - 3M = $3M extra cap hit.

I suggest looking at Spotrac.

They don't need $10M for the rookie class as most of that class won't even fall in the top 51 salaries. And outside of Avila, those that do, won't be much higher than the guys they are replacing in the top 51.

So I doubt the rookie class adds more than $3M to the existing cap number, if that.
The later picks could actually lower the cap by replacing someone on the roster who makes more.

The odds have not been in our favor when gambling with players that we hope might turn out.

Fowler, Floyd and Miller all turned out. With the AD effect, every EDGE we bring in is their best self. Trading for Young makes all the sense to me...he's young, would be a stud for us and we would lock him up for years where we have a ton of cap space.

What do people think all that cap space for next year is for? It's to get a player like Young. Trading for him to make sure we get him - and make us better this year - is a no brainer for me, especially because we will have a million draft picks next year and this team will not need another huge rookie class.

I totally agree. Chase Young just turned 24.

When he’s played he’s been very good… if his knee injury was just a freakish deal, he can turn around his injury reputation.

I might be more concerned that Ron Rivera is “good with trading him”. He would seem like a Ron Rivera kind of player.

Aren't you an Ohio State fan?

I missed his first season. He had 7.5 sacks in 15 games. It was 1.5 sacks in the 12 games he played since.. Leonard Floyd was more productive and the Rams didn't keep him. I'd say hard pass.

Avila's signing bonus is almost 4 mil. Basically his contract is 9 mil 4 years so his 2023 cap alone looks to be close to 6 mil if adding the bonus plus 1/3 or 1/4 of the contract. Or are my numbers wrong there?

I'm not a cap guy, but Jourdan mentioned in the tweet I put up earlier that "they didn’t even have the $8-10M it takes to sign their rookies" so 3 mil looks to be not enough.

I may not be following your thought process correctly (apology if that's the case) but the entire bonus of almost $4M is NOT reflected in Avila's 2023 salary cap hit.

Need to distinguish between payment (by the Rams) / receipt (by Avila) AND allocation for cap purposes.
The Bonus is paid now but it's allocated over the length of the contract ... four years in this case.

So, only 1/4th of Avila's bonus ($3.7M) is allocated to his 2023 cap hit. That's a little over $900,000.

Add to that Avila's 2023 salary of $750,000 (per Spotrac) and the total is under $1.7M.

That's Avila's 2023 cap hit to the Rams ... $1.7M.

Fowler, Floyd and Miller did not have injury problems, and aside from Floyd, Fowler and Miller were proven players. I'll also say, Floyd really only showed his potential for one season and that was his contract season. If we're talking about Rams picking up vet players and maximizing their potential, I agree with you. But taking gambles on players with injury history and hoping to capitalize on them returning to form, the odds are against us.

Spotrac for Avila and hes already accounted for In the $13.7 million current cap space for the Rams.
Yes, he has a $1.68M cap hit.

Now, he bumps off the last player currently on the top 51 salary list who makes about $750K.

So his net cap effect is an -$930K to the cap number.

So again the idea that the remaining class will take $8M to $10M of cap room is completely wrong.

The remaining picks will have much less impact than Avila did and many may not even fall in the top 51.

And should young play so unbelievably great, bolstering his FA value in 2024…comp pick?
