The Rams picked their poison and decided, wisely so, to stop Gibbs and the Lions explosive run game.
Mission accomplished on that front.
The pass rush tends to get better as the game goes on. This was case as well.
The Rams played more (at least it seemed that way to me, I may be wrong) man coverage than normal. It did not go well. But then, either did zone. Those WRs are going to make plays and get open. Just like Adams and Puka, they are too good to shut out. By committing to the run it probably allowed more explosive pass plays, but, what it did not allow was Detroit to control the ball and the clock. The Rams O was not going to be stopped vs that secondary and banged up D. So, getting the ball back and not letting Detroit hold the ball for 7, 8 or 10 minute drives was key.
Sure.....gave up some plays the D would like to have back, but, it got the ball back to the O.
I think McVay knew he only needed a hand full of stops (the missed FG counts) on D to win this game. After falling behind 7-0 McVay going for it twice on 4th down.....and a 4th and 8 at that!!....this showed a real commitment to scoring in this game.
The OL should all get game balls. Shelton is playing the best ball of his career and has some good moments blocking downfield and getting to the second level. He is undersized but very athletic in terms of being a C getting to the second level. He still gets over powered at times but he has improved with his anchor in pass pro. After being hard on Avila second half of last year and early this year it is obvious he is all the way back. He still gets beaten on occasion by a quick rush move but if he can lock on its generally over. Avila is great at those combo blocks....start with a quick double team then peel off to the second level...just excellent and he plays with a little nasty edge in the run game. Dotson is having an excellent year. McClendon appears to be a player. He had some struggles with
Hutchinson, but, most RTs do. He has also done some very good work in the running game. He may have taken that RT spot of the future and freed up one of the first round picks....or at the very least allows Havenstein to fully heal before coming back as there is no panic at this point.
If the OL can continue to run block to the tune of 5.5 YPC.....if the offense can maintain 5 YPC and remain balanced this O is basically not stoppable. Especially if Adams can be back for the play offs.
The dynamic in the Lions Rams match up has changed. Just like the dynamic in the Whiners Rams match up has changed. The Rams used to get forced to try to beat them at their game. Now, those teams will have to play the Rams game to beat the Rams.
That said....I don't wanna see the Whiners in the playoffs.
Defensively Poona had an excellent game as did Speights. Speights was flying all over the field and made some impressive tackles. He is playing like he has been freed up. He has gained enough game experience and experience in the D to just see and react. Not think and get a step behind. He has improved and is playing well. The Conductor collecting two sacks was fun to see.
Stewart continues to impress with very, very solid play and getting valuable, meaningful snaps as a rookie. Ive been super impressed with his ability against the run at times as well. Especially for a smaller guy, he plays with a lot of strength.
Interesting choice to not dress Witherspoon for this game. He may not be 100% and they should wait until he is good to go before putting him back out there. The hope being he can be at 100% for the playoffs.
I really like Wallace as a player and I think he can provide good versatile depth. But, the drop off from Lake in that star role is big. Will Lake be available for the playoffs?
Parkinson has really evolved his receiving game and is blocking well.
Getting Higs back is a nice luxury at this point. The more depth the better, but, Parkinson is likely TE1 now.
That said....does McVay run much of the 13 look vs Seattle? I think they have the speed to deal with the coverage issues that set causes most teams.

The Rams pass rush was always going to be better than the Lions. Eventually they were going to force a bad pass here and there from Goff and end Lions drives.

Then Stafford and the run game were like machines in the 3rd qtr.

Yeah ask Bubba Ram about Shelton & Memento about cutting Parkinson. It’s funny how we all have certain opinions. If you go back & watch games from last season? You should be able to see he made some Big TIme Plays.

There were scary moments in this Lions game.I was upset on that Adams call late in the game.Having him on a play which stretches him in a sprint with a BAD HAMSTRING only is on Sean Mcvay!!
-Alaric Jackson missing a play would’ve been disaster if he was really hurt, which it looked like for a couple minutes.
Then Pucka was crazy seeing him go down.He got a great support. He did walk into the locker room after being sort of carried off.

This is a good team.Amazing how the Rams RB’s are getting outside of the Edge. The defense stepped up.P. Ford looks ok ? They have a good rotation.Turner has that arm brace & he looked like he got that thing oiled up. B. Young steps up when needed,& Verse is just grinding.
This next game is a real extra tough test. The Lions game started to get my stomach upset.Had no place to hide & in between plays just SUCKS !!

If a players isn't able to run the game plan then he shouldn't play.
Injuries happen.....something like a hamstring can get irritated at any time. A deep route with sprinting can do it, but, so can catching a little swing pass and trying to cut to avoid a defender.
Injuries are injuries, no one to blame.

I disagree they were playing deep zone for the most part in the first half and went more man coverage in the second half. That was the main difference in the game imho.

Shula also started bringing 5 man rush occasionally and other blitzes in 2nd half. Made all the difference in the world to Goff’s effectiveness.
