But Isn’t that more of a FO contract thing than a player thing? It’s the same amount of money. Just how it’s structured by the FO - they deserve the credit for that, not the player.
I see it as a Rams' Thing.

The cap-hits vary greatly from year-to-year depending on How the contract is structured. The structure for this Stafford extension greatly benefits the Rams' salary cap over the next two seasons.

It will help them keep and add good players in 2022 & 2023 because they will have more cap space.

That's what matters to me as a Rams' fan.

And its also what happens when these extensions are signed, they get the low cap hit, but rest assured the player gets his money
Stafford is getting a whopping 61.5 mill this year while the cap hit is only 13.5

Exactly. It seems some want to push an agenda that Stafford is taking one for the team with the low early year cap hits. Nope. Dude is not delaying / deferring anything- he’s getting paid a lot and up front. I’m all for heroes- just think some are overdoing it a bit.

I love Matthew Stafford but until he takes me out for dinner, or gets me a nice birthday present (it's in late-May, Matt), I don't really care about his vast wealth. As a Rams' fan, I want to know how the deal is structured because I want to know if the Rams have some cap space to sign other players.

If all the numbers were exactly the same but the Rams did not do the two voidable years, Stafford's 2022 cap hit would be $21.5M with a $1.5M cap savings over what he was scheduled to make pre-extension. If the Rams did one voidable year, his 2022 cap hit would be $16.5M with $6.5M cap savings.

By doing two voidable years, the 2022 cap hit is $13.5M with a $9.5M cap savings. It's a Rams' thing!

Not sure if I've chimed in here about this OP or not, but this is incredible news. I was so worried Stafford's deal would eclipse Rodgers' or Watson's, putting a giant albatross around the neck of the Rams for years. This gives the Rams the flexibilty to go after & keep talent.

That said... doesn't OBJ understand that Watson's deal pretty much guarantees that the Browns will suffer for years? like they haven't already? and, what if Watson goes down?? all that capital wrapped up into 1 player isn't very smart. Cleveland, with so much recent promise, will just turn into a swirling bathtub drain of money. Even if F/A's wanted to go there, the Browns won't be able to afford them. If I was OBJ (AND wasn't just after the $$), I'd never go there.

This is awesome news! I'm glad that the contract is not like, say, Watson's, where his cap actively hurts hurt the team.

I'd have commented earlier, but typing and like button pressing from an iPhone is fucking tough.

Stafford is a sharp QB. Listening to him makes me understand how McVay wanted to develop a relationship with him and have him lead the Rams offense.

Following contracts are getting a bit tiresome. So many variables and outs. Good to have Stafford's deal done with what seems good for him and the Rams. The average is below the most recent deals and right on the previous level for QBs.

I think his cap hits are relevant to the discount theory. The agents are call experts, I'm sure. They have to know if a team is bullshitting them or not.

With that assumption, his agent could have easily said 9.5 million in savings is to much for the most clutch super bowl winning QB in the league. Instead of 13.5 and 20 million in cap hit over the next two years, make it 17.5 and 30 because that's still a tiny hit for a QB and you can afford it. And there's voidable years. Some of the money in those voidable years is lost when the team voids them. Which means the $43m isn't really $43m if (when) we void those years or restructure.

We've all talked about what a distraction Rodgers is, how selfish and focused on his own statistics he is even when it's to the detriment of his own team and his own success. If we know it, the team and the agent knows it. Coming off a super bowl win specifically because Stafford is a bigger risk taker and more clutch, he surely could have squeezed several million more out of the team. He's sure as shit better than Josh Allen and Dak Prescott, but he took Allen and Prescott money. If you're not just trying to be right, this isn't hard to figure out.

Excerpt:

"I was just trying to find something that felt good for both sides, and we were able to continue to add players and pieces around me, and then still take care of all the stuff that you want to take care of as a professional player," Stafford said. "So it was great, I'm just happy to be a part of this organization for the foreseeable future."

Can we start a petition to give our QB the nickname Matty Ice?? What in the actual fuck has Matt Ryan done to earn that in the NFL?? Be part of a team that lost a SB after leading by 25 points with basically a quarter to go?? Pfffff..

And scary is he might be better year two in this offense. Every reason for me to think that will be the case in fact.

His career would be complete with an MVP award (IMO)

Agreed but I prefer he gets another ring. :startstruck: I think McVay is getting this guy to elevate and play up to his considerable talent. So there is no reason why we can't win more titles before he's done.

Let's get as many as we can. We should be at 3 total but those cheating fucks in NE robbed us of one.

MVP is a stats based award. There is no way Rodgers was more valuable than Stafford. Stafford had 4 bad games and we lost them all. When he plays well, we win. The one exception was week 18 when we blew a 17 point lead. Hell Rodgers wasn't as valuable as Mahomes or Burrow. If he was truly valuable, with the statistical seasons he's put together the Packers would have more titles. 7-9 in the postseason and 4 MVPs. Something is wrong there.
