Maybe its just me. But I do not think "fail" is in Simpsons DNA.
The position is more about whats between the ears than any other. It sure looks like he has that nailed down and enough physical tools to get it done.
Pre season will be great. If he was 2" taller he might have been the #1 overall. Sure looks to be about as big as Stafford when they are standing side by side.
At least the Rams did not draft a running QB.

Agree, most important Quarterback trait- Brain

It's funny: before the draft, i think I was literally the only one saying this here.

I said head >> arms and legs. It seems everyone else was talking about all other physical attributes. Simpson will be a good test case on whether I knew what the hell i was talking about.

I think back to that pre-Draft interview with McVay, about 2 weeks before Draft. One on one interview, interviewer asked about Ty Simpson, McVay's voice CRACKED high and he IMMEDIATELY pivoted to Mendoza. Tells me he knew what Simpson WAS, and wanted him BAAAAAD.

Plenty of QBs with brains have played with no success. No matter the name, every QB has to put all their strong traits together. I saw someone mentioned Warner. Smart as hell with pin point accuracy and great arm to put it on WRs. Whether Simpson gets there or anywhere near that or simply falters that is TBD so no matter anyone's view, we won't know until a few years down the road. Honestly discussing him is such a round and round conversation until he actually gets some play on the field. In the meantime, at least we have our QB in Stafford that is elite in many of the traits mentioned (especially his athleticism lol) to guide our team.

Ty Simpson played through multiple injuries in the latter half of the 2025 season, including a lower back issue, gastritis, and elbow bursitis. If not for these injuries, he would have been the #1 Draft pick.

That's extremely debatable. Simpson playing like shit caused him to fall further. What's that saying in football.....oh yeah everyone is playing injured at some point. Those sound like excuses to me. Stafford had a back injury too and was MVP.....some QBs perform better thru being banged up. If Simpson doesn't learn to do that, well, he ain't gonna be the man cuz the men in the NFL hit way harder than college.

IMO, "playing like shit" is a tad bit strong. He was basically a rookie starting for the first time in his college career.

During the regular season, he had a 151.0 QB rating, 7.86 yds/att, 6.4 TD%, 1.0 Int%.
In the postseason, he had a 118.8 QB rating, 6.08 yds/att, 3.6 TD%, 1.2 Int%

He AND his team mates played worse in the postseason. Got down early to Georgia and couldn't fight back. Of course that was the 2nd time they faced him so a well coached team like Georgia is going to make adjustments. Simpson seemingly made adjustments facing Oklahoma for the second time winning that one. They lost to Indiana, where NOBODY on Alabama looked good. And IIRC, Indiana didn't lose a game all year, looked like the better team in every game they played.

So I'll give him a pass for "playing like shit", as you say. First season under center, great regular season, bad post season. Sort of what one might expect from a talented (first round?) rookie QB in the NFL. But that wasn't the NFL. Nobody knows how he's going to pan out there so we're going to have to wait. Which means, those down on him can spend all that time talking shit about him and those who like him can spend all that time talking him up, without being wrong. Doesn't mean a fucking thing.

This is why I think Ty will turn out to be a better QB than Mendoza.
That plus brains, where IMO he's got Mendoza beat.
People worry about his experience but he's been developing to be an NFL QB for a long time.
Under duress with an inferior team he played extremely well until hurt.
He is slight but a year of NFL weight training should help.

I see Stafford playing 2 more years if he stays healthy, maybe just one if they win the ring this year.
Pretty good chance Simpson is starting in 28, maybe even next year.
Given health (always a consideration) I think he'll be better than fine.
Great fit with McVay.

IMO, his size is what probably stopped him most from at least being the conversation for #1 overall. IMO, having that prototype size is HUGE for NFL teams.

It would have been nice to see how much better he would have looked with two 1,000 yard rushers like Mendoza enjoyed (Bama's top rusher barely cracked 500 yards). And if his WRs didn't drop so many passes.

But, perhaps it's good that he didn't as the Rams would have had to trade up for him.

Mendoza's not lacking in the brains department, though. We don't have to put down other QBs to hype up our own. I certainly hope Simpson will have a HOF career or at least help us win numerous Super Bowls, and yes, his accuracy and anticipation has Mendoza beat, but Mendoza, I feel, is going to be outstanding, and his smarts play a big deal with that.

I feel like both QBs will go on to do great things on the field.

The supporting cast and coaching are also important. If the Cleveland Browns had actually selected Kurt Warner in the expansion draft, he would have failed there. He might not have even made the roster; they might have waived him before he even had a chance to play in a game for them.

Not all the factors that will determine Simpson's success are within his hands. The Rams as an organization must succeed around him and continue to provide a strong support structure. The team is very strong right now, but things can change quickly in the NFL. We don't know how things might look like 5 years down the road. Just look at what happened to the Chiefs last year. Even Mahomes can't single handedly fix every problem by himself.

To be successful, Simpson has to do his part. But the Rams also have to keep up their half of the bargain.

How often does that happen?
Luck, Wilson in the 3rd, Cousins in the 4th back in 2012.
We thought Goff and Wentz were both going to be successful and for a while they both were. For a while. Prescott in the 4th is the 2nd successful QB from that draft.
Mayfield and Darnold, the first two taken in 2018 seem better now than they were their first 5 years or so. Allen and Lamar were from that class also.
Burrow and Herbert in 2020. Love and Hurts also.
Lawrence in 2021 and not much else.
2022's best QB was taken in the 7th round (Purdy) but Willis might be a late bloomer like Mayfield and Darnold.
Young and Stroud are unimpressive.
Caleb, Daniels, Maye and Nix look like they're headed in the right direction.
Ward & Dart from last year?
Mendoza and Simpson this year.

In the last 15 drafts (2012-2026) there are 4 instances when a couple of QBs turned out successful. 2012, 2016, 2018 and 2020. 2024 looks like a winner too, so 5 of 15.
