I am a big fan of Stetson.
But has he really proven that he's a above average backup or is he just another question mark you bring in to try out?
I don't think you get much for Bennett.
But we've been known to do great things with sixth and seventh round draft picks... so...

Getting anything for Bennett would be a win for me. Never liked the pick, and a lot of the issues he's had make me like it less. To get anything for him is a win - and you're right that we've done well with very late-round picks throughout the McVay era (Sebastian Joseph-Day, Jordan Fuller, Quentin Lake, Tyler Davis, Jordan Whittington for sixths and Nick Scott, Ben Skowronek, Ethan Evans, Desjuan Johnson, KT Leveston, and Konata Mumpfield for sevenths).

That's a fair take. I am just of the mind that there is too much emphasis on Simpson enabling those moves. Sure, there's a connection from the perspective of the Rams saying that 2027 first round pick came into play for upgrading the team directly due to them taking a shot on a QB of the future. But Simpson is still a bit of a dice roll as it pertains to whether he is in fact our future QB1. And by that I don't mean the guy who starts for a year or two, but the QB1 who kicks ass for a decade or more in horns.

In other words aside from the QB side of things those offseason moves may be enough to win us a title. They don't need the QBotF tied in. It's a nice storyline and there is truth to it, but Simpson is not a factor this year for the title run this team looks like it may be destined to make. Even if they were still sitting there with Jimmy on a cheap contract once again they could have made those moves and still perhaps poached a QB by positioning for one who falls out of favor in what should be a deeper class in 2027.

It feels good to have a QB who might be the future on our roster. And I am looking forward to preseason more than I have in years. So the way I see it maybe Simpson hits and if so then sure, your words will be correct. But if not, that's fine too, provided we win a title or two in the next few years, or even if Stafford plays for a few more years and keeps us relevant and Simpson ends up being a long term backup. That's not an ideal use of a 13th overall pick but I don't care all that much as long as we get a title and/or if Stafford sticks around longer than expected.
The only reason for the emphasis on Simpson enabling those moves is because the GM has said many times that drafting Simpson enabled those moves. No need to downplay that.

You're right that Simpson may not hit and could be considered a dice roll, but the team is not of that mindset.

Yeah, Simpson was a dice roll (undetermined,) same way Mahomes was a dice roll (Hit) Allen was a dice roll (Hit) Rosen was a dice roll (Miss) Stroud was a dice roll (Miss) B. Young was a dice roll (Miss) Hurts was a dice roll (Hit) Lamar was a dice roll (Hit) Daniels was a dice roll (Miss)

Same as it ever was.......... Same as it ever was........ And look where my hand was...........

Yep, there's always been a lot of dice rolls at QB. Fingers crossed that Simpson is a hit. It helps that McVay probably just needs him to be Purdy plus.

As an aside, I'm not ready to say Daniels is a miss.

Fair enough.

Spoiler alert: he's a miss....

My arguement is that if Ty can't beat Bennett out in camp, this year, than he was not the caliber of player the Rams thought he was...

BUT and even bigger problem is if Bennett beats our Ty, Ty will get effectively no snaps in this offense. The remaining snaps will be on scout team. That is not this offense, that is the opponents offense every week. (Sure it's our verbiage but it's their offense).

BTW, Bennett and Ty were already splitting reps with one's when Stafford was resting in OTAs so it's not like Bennett has shown he's good enough even at this point.
Still we don't know just how much of a competition there will actually be in camp especially given the limited number of snaps or whatever the plan is for Simpson.

Anyway, this isn't a bad team with a possible backup QB competition. This is a Super Bowl contender and in a fair competition the guy with 3 years of experience in the offense should have a huge edge over another just learning the offense. They may not have time to wait for Simpson's development. But that has far more to do with experience in the offense than him possibly not being the so-called caliber of player the Rams thought he was...

As for the so-called even bigger problem, learning the offense via study and watching Stafford should be huge even if he is running the scout team during the week. Besides, most offenses are not that vastly different to where he couldn't get something out of that task, too.

Again, this is a kid that sat and when he got his opportunity looked more pro ready than most NFL rookie QBs coming out of college. Whose to say that he couldn't do it again?

The money quote Memphis. Good educatin'. Not all of us needed that.....

Great question.

Little 'o both.

"RG IV"

Cannot fundamentally change the way this Quarterback position is played. From the neck up.

And way too skinny.

Disagree on the "neck up" part. He had absolutely no protection with his O-line and no production from his receivers, McLaurin aside. They've given Daniels nothing to work with and expected him to make gold out of pigshit. It's not his football IQ that's the problem.

Now injuries, you can say are the problem, but with a better O-line, Washington could protect him better. He has the ability to win in the pocket while running a bit; he just has to have better people around him, like any other QB.

Yes, Mem, I'll agree the book is not closed on him, and I will state, a full acknowledgement if I'm wrong about this, but as a betting man, on a "hit or miss" prop, Im betting miss. Too many red flags for me, and the RG III similarities are jarring.

There will be more snaps with the 1s for the backup than any other team in the league given McVays expressed desire to give Stafford even more rest days this year (they basically said that they think they lucked into Stafford not wearing down during the season due to him basically not playing at all in camp).

In OTA's Nate Atkins made it sound like Ty and Bennett were splitting 1st team reps in place of Stafford due to his rest days so the competition has already begun. He did say neither seemed to have more command than the other and did reference that neither had had a chance to work with anyone on the 1st team before.

Not sure if a snap comparison vs. the rest of the league even matters. Training camp is still just maybe a couple weeks or so and Stafford will still get some reps. Besides, we don't know if the splitting of reps is still the plan or for how long as the #2 QB will probably need as many snaps as possible at some point.

On a side note, I'm kinda leery of any opinions of Nate Atkins after the interview I heard on Sirius.

No. McVay doesn't settle at QB. Goff is proof of that.

McVay needs him to be elite. He's going to have a great indoctrination to the NFL too, coming to the Rams as a rook QB and redshirting behind Stafford is winning the fucking lottery. I don't think there's a better situation in this league at this current moment in time, so I have extremely high expectations but of course there's no hurry. Hopefully Stafford has another healthy and MVP level season so the kid gets to chill and build his game before he ends up out there.
