I was impressed with her article on NFL.com. I’m a little dumbstruck on this one. Her mechanics are good (could be a couple steps back from goal line to avoid player contact) and she’s looking at the ball. If she awards a touchdown on the field the play gets booth-reviewed anyhow.

Two potential explanations:

1. She just missed the play, it happened faster than she could process it.

2. Her crew chief instructed the officials to assume any possible turnover is a turnover and let the play continue. This way any progress after the turnover is sustained, and delays and reviews will be minimized if a potential turnover occurs. When she went to confer with the white hat after the picture above (crew chief), he said be consistent and call it a turnover. It’s getting reviewed.

I’d wager #2 is the more likely scenario.

Yeah that was one of the most ridiculous calls I have ever seen.

I mean she is looking right at the ball crossing the goal line by a good 8 inches with both of Kendricks hands on the ball.

Even a high school ref would have gotten that call correct.

I have to argue about #2 - she was arguing with the refs a good 10 seconds after the play was over. As far as letting it go since there may be a return would have been okay if there actually had been a return. But the ball immediately went out of bounds.

She should have called it properly as a TD and then let the reviews determine if it was actually a fumble since they didn't call it a fumble until 30 seconds after the play was over.

That was just a terrible terrible terrible call.

The only call that I would even remotely call almost as bad was a Dodgers game a few years before instant replay where the first basement was 5 feet off the bag when he caught the ball and the Ump called the Dodger out.

Yeah that's the problem. Zebra's gotta process fast... part of their job. A Stripe that cannot process quick enough while looking directly at the play is useless. Thankful for the replay but man we've seen some overturned bullshit - *cough* Tutu *cough* - can't be letting it always get to that level. No excuse for this one, she gets a BIG FAT FAIL here. :thumbsdown:

I think refs should call when they see. If you let the turnover scene play out, now you need conclusive proof to overturn it and conclusive proof is puzzling at times.

I recall a game when Goff was still QB. The Rams went for a 2 point conversion and the refs confirmed it. Then they showed replay with a pile of players blocking a good view of Goff and the ball. They overturned the call even though there was zero conclusive evidence available to justify the overturned call.

I agree with you Steve. If her skills got her to the NFL, trust her to make that judgment call. Don’t start suggesting the evils of a turnover not called correctly.

I actually woke up this morning a started watching the game. After that horrible illegal contact call on 3rd down on the opening drive to keep the Cowboys offense on the field I was tempted to turn the TV off and go back to sleep. It was such a bad call.

The pick 6 from Stafford sealed the deal. Back to beautiful sleep.
