A rebuild would be if the Rams

a) Hired a new HC/GM
b) Ejected Stafford, AD, Kupp, Ramsey…along with our 2nd tier core guys
c) All of the above

The Rams look to me to be reshuffling and repositioning to stay relevant, competitive and a contender, same as they’ve done for the last five or six years. The difference now is that the core is getting older so the decisions will look different.

It is a flush the toilet and see if we can sucker fans into showing up year. Not sure why AD or Stafford would bother showing up at this point.

Hopefully we don’t know all the details of their plan and they’ll pull something out of their butts to be competitive.

To me there's enough this year to call it a rebuild. If we're lucky it will be a reload, which is possible because we have top coaching. Without that this would be a 5 win season ahead and wait for picks to reassert themselves in 2024 and even then the roster would be short.

Because McVay is a badass I'd say we might make the playoffs even though we're rebuilding. I think last year we had him trying to balance married life vs the game while also riding the high from winning it all. But hopefully he's razor sharp now and ready to fuck this offseason up.

I think these moves are positioning us for another run in 2024, but that doesn't mean 2023 will be a tank season. McVay will have a lot of young talent to develop and scheme with (without run-it-back expectations hanging over him).

I expect to finish better than the 2022 season's 5-12, but reaching 2021's 12-5 seems even less likely.

Maybe not a rebuild but I don't think a reload either. Something in between. They want to be competitive. But they also know they're limited with the resources.

I don't think there is anything they can do to return to championship status. So they should not make the mistake of sacrificing the future to try and be competitive. They're gonna have to find the right balance and see if they can be good enough to make the playoffs.

If they can do that they have the pieces and experience to go on a deep run. Just make the playoffs and its a whole new season. Battle tested teams can have as good a chance as anyone else.

It's more like a "blow it the fuck up" year. Cap caught up and we will pay the price this year and minimally next. Might as well entertain trading AD along with all the others leaving. Does anybody here actually believe our defense will be just fine without Wagner, Floyd, Ramsey, Rapp, Scott, etc? Hell no, might as well collect as many draft choices as we can, draft a QB next year and drastically improve our cap situation for 2025.

We are going to replace the windows, put on a new roof, reinforce the foundation, put in a new HVAC, convert the garage into a man cave, add a new deck, gut/replace the kitchen, put in an irrigation system, expand the master bathroom but it’s a “Retool” not “Rebuild” project.

Let’s see…

I’m trying to wrap my head around losing all of the following this offseason:

Floyd
Already a hole at opposite edge unless you think Hoecht is adequate.
Gaines
ARob
Wagner
Ramsey
Hill
Scott

Not gonna mention Rapp as a big loss, but he was a starter.

That’s 8-9 starter spots to fill on D when the stated focus is to emphasize O this offseason. Emphasis STARTING spots on D…

And we’re being told that this is a ‘remodel’, not a ‘rebuild’?

Are you KIDDING me?

Just irt the defense...

They need to find two safeties. Not too difficult to do that, as they could potentially add one on the cheap in FA and then draft a couple mid to late rounds among all those comp picks. Generally speaking safeties with good coaching can translate quickly if you play them the way they showed their best in college. Rams executed a cheap safety reload prior to Staley's first season and it paid off big time that season for us. So not too worried about them regardless of who leaves.

They need two corners who fit whatever scheme Raheem wants to call. This is with the assumption Ramsey is dealt. Durant is a good piece that works at 1 of the 3 "starting" corner positions. If he can play outside then maybe Kendrick settles in the slot and we're not so short in year two as both improve. Kendrick playing outside the hash was not his fault. That was on the coaching. But regardless just to be safe we need turnover back there so two corners feels right to me if Ramsey is dealt. Then you have better depth and are not relying on Kendrick. This is probably our biggest need, simply because of how unlikely it is we find a top edge this offseason. We need to rebuild this group so they can cover. Which is what they did not do the past two seasons, they just had a rush covering them during the SB run.

They need two edge additions if Floyd is dealt. Chances are those additions will be good contain and run game types at the least, as you can find them and this is why they're going to cut bait on Floyd. The hard ones to find are the rush specialists, the guys with the instincts to get pressure. Maybe we get lucky there, maybe not. But two additions are required and they'll probably be the types we need to hold up vs run games in the division.

So that's 6 additions. If we assume they bring in a cheap FA at safety or edge (dice roll type) then we're talking 5 picks spent on the defense at a minimum. It isn't easy to hit on that many additions. So let's assume 3 of them can impact in primary roles. We're probably going to be one of those defenses that has a few holes. Edit also let me add that if we're lucky some of our holdover talent develops better, which could positively affect all this.

On top of that you have questions at DC. Raheem needs to have a great season. I don't think he is dumb, he's a smart dude and you can tell in the way he speaks, but he has to do better for this defense to have a resurgence given the above. He's gonna need to improve in particular in pre-snap mind games with QBs. You just cannot line up at this level vs these QBs and do well if they're not confused at least a little bit. Not without top players at most positions which is hard to pull off.

Looking at the secondary/staff moves Raheem is going to have much better support around him to ensure he's ready on gameday for each opponent. I don't expect coaching to be an issue basically. We don't have an elite DC unfortunately but we won a SB with Raheem so let's focus on getting him the right pieces for him to call it how he wants this season.

I don't see how you can call it a "rebuild" when you have a top 10 QB. Maybe it's the fact that there's a worry that Stafford can't stay healthy. Had he not gotten injured last year, would people be this worried about a "rebuild?"

QBs are critical but they're still only one player. To me this falls into the Chris Collingsworthless "act like the QB is Jesus Christ" routine.

What was the Rams record with Stafford last year?

Maybe, but I think it's an interesting thought experiment. We're already playing with semantics by labeling what the Rams are doing as something vs looking at the details of what they're doing. Why not play with the details? What if it were Mahomes? Would any team with Mahomes right now be considered a rebuild?

Mahomes is amazing, no doubt. He can make up for a lot of issues around him. But one of KC's strengths is having OL expertise wrapped up in their head coach position. Reid doesn't get enough cred at times I think for what he does.

Also and btw it had to feel good to him to win that SB vs the team that undervalued him.

But if you put Mahomes on a shitty team what happens. They win a few more games but are likely still shit. IMO.
