when they restructure like this, they convert a portion of the base salary to a bonus, that gets paid immediately, and combines with the salary, usually equals what they were scheduled to make in the first place. But by converting part of it to a signing bonus, it can be spread over the remaining years of the contract.Actually, I think it's all this year. He took a pay cut to stay on the team for this year - I believe he is still a free agent next season and now makes less this year than he otherwise would have - but he gets a gtd 250k bonus which makes us think he will stay on the roster for the rest of this season.
In other words, they get the same $$$, but for cap (accounting purposes) it gives the relief THIS YEAR. and the player gets an "advance" on his earnings.
