I knew they would not hire Dykes, that would not go well in Happy Valley. Would not shock me if the hire is James Madison Head Coach Bob Chesney. The base would not be overwhelmed, but it worked really well for Indiana and I like what Chesney brings to the table. He reminds me of Jim Tressel, when Ohio State hired him from Youngstown State.
It has been a shit show that is for sure and I would not be shocked to see their AD Pat Kraft fired. That being posted, not sure who they end up with and if it's Manny Diaz, that would be a mistake IMO as he is no Mike Elko. Overall, they took some big swings early and whiffed. Then they focused on Sitake, but when I read that, I thought it was a mistake because I could never see him leaving BYU and then the Church got involved raised money and now he is staying in Provo.
Not sure they can even keep Terry Smith now because of being so far down the line. I have seen some NFL Coaches bantered about in Daboll & Mike Tomlin, but Tomlin IMO is too old for the college scene and Daboll needs to reinvent himself first. Where do they turn? Kalen DeBoer would be a win for them, but with everything that has gone on, I see that as doubtful.
If I was running things now, I would turn to UVA HC Tony Elliot. That program was in shambles and Elliot kept it together and now is playing for the ACC Title. Great recruiter and a class act, they could do far worse then Tony Elliot.
Wow, that's a surprise. Iowa State just had a great signing day, their best ever. And Campbell is gonna go to Penn State where they signed nobody?
I read somewhere Penn St had spent $500 million already on the coaching search with no hire. I'm guessing they'll attack the portal if they get him though.
If they end up with Matt Campbell, that will be a very good hire and IMO, where they should have started in the first place. Penn State swung for the fences and missed, they should have never tried to go after the likes of Curt Cignetti or Kalen DeBoer IMO. Cignetti is 64 and treated like a God in Indiana, he's not going anywhere and Alabama although more pressure, is a better job then Penn State IMHO.
Campbell perfect age 46 and understands how to recruit in the Midwest. That would have been a huge challenge for Kalani Sitake, who I don't think has every been out of the state of Utah. It will be interesting if Campbell keeps either Knowles or Andy Kotelnicki as coordinators.
Pretty sure Becht has a year of eligibility left, I wonder if he'd follow Campbell to Happy Valley?

Crazy 5 minutes in Ames
and not just that Matt Campbell took the Penn State job ,
for years now , every time a high profile coaching job came open , Matt Campbell's name was always on that list of replacements
he has turned down many high profile jobs to stay at Iowa State , but many , like me , just always thought , there was only one job that Matt Campbell would leave Iowa State for , and that was Penn State , well , a couple months ago , that job actually came available
so , many Cyclone fans , saw the writing on the wall , but rumors had died down over the last month or so , so there was hope
until Thursday
here is were it starts to get a little crazy , rumors just popped out of nowhere , that Penn State was in final negations , with Matt Campbell
and so Friday , I kept checking my twiiter account for any updates or official word
already planning on Iowa State now having to start a new head coaching search
and I thought , there has alot of high profile coaches fired this year , so , who knows
then last evening , word broke that Iowa State was going to have a team meeting at 7:00 , and I thought , ok , here it is
and then twitter feeds starting claiming it was a done deal
here's where it gets crazy , so just a couple minutes after 7:00 . I tuned into Penn States youtube channel , and as soon as I got there , they were talking about the hiring of Matt Campbell , and as I was reading the live comments section , they were saying that Iowa State had already hired their new coach , and I was like
so I zipped back to twitter , and yep , like minutes after 7:00 , Iowa State had announced they had hired Jimmy Rogers out ot Washington State
and I'm not even sure it was 5 minutes , from the time I heard Matt Campbell to Pennt State was offical , that Iowa State had aready hired his replacement

funny how stuff works , two days ago , Jimmy Rogers was at his Press Conference at Washington State talking about how excited he was about this years recruiting class , and this morning , he's the head coach at Iowa State
we will rally behind Jimmy Rogers , and we will play good football

total bummer ,,but no unexpected
always felt the only job Matt Campbell would leave Iowa State for would be the Penn State job

hate to see him go , but Penn State got a pretty great coach
as a Cyclone fan , we all knew he had pretty much reached his ceiling at Iowa State
hate to see him go , but also excited to see what he can do with Penn State money and recruiting
except when Penn State plays the Hawkeyes

Just out of curiosity, what made you all believe Penn St. was the ONLY job that would cause him to leave Iowa St?

Dont know if it is any one reason
but it's been talked about for a few years now here in Iowa
he's from Ohio , his family is all live in Ohio ,
and that was the reason he gave Jamie Pollard the Iowa State AD for his decision , personal family reasons
it's just been water cooler chatter for a few years now , that if Matt Campbell were to leave , it would be for Penn State , as he has already turned down other big profile jobs
Yeah as crazy as your description of the last few weeks/days was the fact Penn St. ended up with one of the hottest coaching hires is even crazier!!! They were getting ripped and frankly, I think this guy was the better hire than any of those they lost out on. Weird.

what is weird
the story here now , is that Penn State actually reached out to Matt Campbells agent right at the start , but for what ever reason , it never got through to Matt Campbell him self
and that agent is no longer Matt Campbells agent
