This time of year, I think it's OK to be optimistic, I can be bummed out at a later time.

I stick with Realist which means I can be either optimistic or pessimistic

And unfortunately I am pessimistic when it comes to Morris defense approach

But I think with this type of team, soft zone may be the right defense for this team

one thing, I am sure that what Morris does, he does with McVay's approval.

Aleric Jackson was arguably the best offensive lineman on the roster last year, but this site has him on the bench. I think it’s more likely that if AJ isn’t the OLT, then he and Avila are the guards, with Shelton as the Center. How can the possibly rely on Allen’s chronic knee condition? Noteboom may not be ready, but AJ played better than Joe last year.

The receiving Corp isn’t too impressive. Aside from Kupp, they have a few JAGs.

I don’t think Tanner will be ADs backup. He will rotate with the entire line. I’d rather see him in the field with AD on passing downs.

i disagree.

van looked fantastic with stafford. by the time he came back last season he had wolford and perkins stinking it up.

tutu showed he was a weapon last season. if stafford has time tutu can be a big playmaker for the rams.

Yeah but I bet it also depends on what the DC is comfortable with.

At one time - McVay said he wanted an aggressive defense but now we are going in an opposite direction with Morris

Looking at this depth chart really shows what is needed if we really want to compete this year as opposed to just being competitive, if that makes sense.

This team needs veteran help on the inside of the defensive line and up the middle linebacker help, along with a veteran corner and safety. Four league-average vets and this team can actually compete.

Now, between salary cap stuff and a stated intent to go for it in 2024, do I think they'll bring in those four guys?

Likely no. But could still bring in 1-2 of them after their first camps wrap up.

I could also see us doing mid year trades for vets when we are still in contention for the playoffs (and yes I said when)

That's for people who say Realists are actually Pessimists in Denial

I think it's likely the only notable moves that they would make is if its for a player that can help them for a number of yrs. Like they did with Ramsey in 19'.

A short term 23' fix only, is likely not what they are willing to spend cap space on or to commit playing time for, at the expense of their young guys and their development.

If they are not looking like contenders I’d rather they keep their draft picks in the case that they want to trade up for one of the top two QBs in the 2024 draft.

At best this team looks like it may be a wild card team. Make the big moves once the Super Bowl window is more wide open.

Who has the longer leg ?
Between Dunn & Brown, they both are similar in leg strength. In fact, if we needed to kick a 59 yard FG they might actually let the Punter Evans give a shot, since he did both FG's & Punts at Wingate.

Fantastic is not what I’d call him. Van played well when healthy but he won’t scare any DBs or their DC.

I still cannot get my hopes up with Tutu. He’s too small to be a serious threat against good defenses.

The Rams need another receiver to take some of the heat off of Kupp. They need someone with more versatility than just a deep threat. He may not have to be as good as Kupp but definitely better than Skowronek and Tutu. Maybe Puka Macua can be that guy but one rule of thumb is not to rely on injured or injury prone players as an integral part of your team. Makua had some injuries in college.

I wouldn't want top vets - just someone who can come in and keep the young players in line

I would say 5th or 6th round picks at the best

What would really be nice is if Jefferson could kick some ass at X for us. Maybe he's ready to do that. He does have the raw ability you want out there. He's over six foot and has enough wheels to him as well as the route acumen. Question for him is that dawg factor and beating that jam out there because if I'm the opposing DC you can bet I'm putting someone all up in his grill.

That would fix a lot of issues with our WR production. I like Skow very much as a big body depth piece that gets moved around and can function inside or out as we saw last season. McCutch would back Jefferson nicely, he's fine as a depth piece especially if he can take a step forward this year and work on getting off that sideline a bit better.

The final chart would look something like this:

X: Jefferson / McCutcheon
Z: Atwell / Skowronek
Y: Kupp / Macua

The offense obviously runs better when Kupp is in the slot due to his ability to make catches all over the middle with his near-TE size. Atwell is gonna need to be able to get open outside the hash, which by now should not be a problem if he's gonna be a pro receiver. But if he shows well enough then you can flip him and Kupp at will and shake both of them loose I am sure by use of McVay's formations and whatnot.

If Kupp misses time then Macua gives you a big body target who has some shakes to him. Not ideal but this depth chart looks better than last year's just by virtue of guys taking steps forward. I am very hopeful that's what we get.

Oh and re: the UDFA types I think Hudson has the best chance to give McCutcheon a challenge. Because he will serve in that similar role, and he's got a little something to him I think. But I figure McCutch in year two is ready to go and I love his ability to make contested catches. He's gonna need to show improvement though and the competition will do him good.

James and Smith factor in as returners. And between the two I think James has an advantage in that he has the size to compete at X. Also I think he's got more to him in the pattern than Smith which matters to McVay. So it looks to me like McCutch may need to beat two challengers, one of whom could be our returner.

I go with 6 WRs by default as a solid number but Rams could go to 7 of course. Thing is they're gonna have more competition vs the TE group this year. Hopkins is very much on the bubble but if he shows well then that hurts the WR numbers so we'll see it's gonna be a fun camp to watch.
