OTA Observations: RBs coach Ron Gould discusses Kyren Williams' increased explosiveness, Blake Corum and Jarquez Hunter's OTA performances

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – At the end of last season, Rams running back Kyren Williams made it clear that he wasn't satisfied with his performance in 2024.
Despite ranking seventh in the NFL in rushing yards (1,299) and tying for fifth in rushing touchdowns (14), Williams acknowledged that his lack of explosiveness and ball security were costly, vowing to improve in both areas ahead of next season.
Running backs coach Ron Gould has already noticed strides taken in those areas during OTAs, and also discussed observations from Blake Corum and Jarquez Hunter with theRams.com. When asked about the group at large, which also includes Williams, Corum, Hunter, Ronnie Rivers, Cody Schrader and Jordan Waters, Gould said he's been "pleased" with how all of the running backs have done this spring.
Williams showing improved explosiveness
Williams' 27 explosive rushes (10-plus yards) ranked tied for 11th in the NFL last season, but were the second-fewest of any running back with over 250 carries (he had 316). Meanwhile, his five fumbles tied for the second-most among running backs.
But after a few months away from the facility, Williams showed up in "exceptional shape," Gould told theRams.com.
"The first thing that stood out to us was his explosiveness," Gould said. "... One of the things (I noticed) was just his ability to stay grounded through some of his runs that was really, really evident in the work that he's put in, so really, really pleased with that."

Williams and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, have had an ongoing dialogue with the Rams' front office about a potential extension this offseason, as Williams enters the final year of his rookie deal. Still, Williams was a constant presence at voluntary workouts, sporting his signature grin and bringing the younger players up to speed.
From guiding the rest of the running back room through drills to spreading his infectious energy, vintage Williams was on full display during OTAs.
"You talk about leadership, that's what that's all about," Gould said, "So he's done a great job of uniting the guys, bringing everybody together, and making sure that we all stay on the same page."
Corum has "gotten his speed back"
After fracturing his forearm against the Seahawks in Week 18, Corum is back on the field making defenders miss. Not only is he back to full health, but he's shown improvement from last season.
"He's gotten his speed back, so his explosiveness has come back," Gould said. "We had a chance to just see that, and then his ability to come out of cuts, which is something that we saw in the junior year and part of his senior year."
Similar to Williams, Corum has displayed more explosive tendencies during training camp than he did last season. And after the Rams ranked 29th in explosive rushes last season, that's an area where they would welcome some improvement in 2025.

Hunter has excellent speed and "attention to detail"
If the Rams want more chunk gains on the ground, Hunter can provide. Last season at Auburn, the 5-foot-9, 204-pound speedster broke off 42 explosive rushes, ranking eighth in the FBS.

"His superpower is his speed, he's really fast," Gould said. "And then the second thing is, if you get the pads on you, he's a heavier guy, he's a guy who can go north and south, and he's a guy who's gonna be able to come out of a lot of tackles."
Gould has also been impressed with how quickly Hunter has picked up the offense, making "minimal mistakes" during drills and meetings.
"He's impressed me (with) his attention to detail," Gould said. "And he's a young man that's very focused on making sure he's doing exactly what we need him to do in order for him to take that next step. And then I was just very surprised at how quickly he picked up everything."

Gould doing some things differently
When asked if he's doing anything differently with the running back room ahead of 2025, Gould said, "absolutely." He wants to enable his players in grow in whatever areas the team needs them to, and sometimes that means changing things up.
"You look at what guys' strengths are, I think it starts out with me," Gould said. "I have to be better as a coach, and then if I'm better as a coach, then I think that's gonna reflect on the players."

Sounds like run game explosives is at the top of the agenda for RB room.
If we can get the oline healthy, I see no reason we can't accomplish that.
Would love nothing more than Corum and Hunter to contribute enough
to give Kyren some fresher legs come playoff time.
He had to carry to entire run game last year and that can definitely take its
toll, season and career

Yeah 314 carries a year and he'll be toast before he's halfway through his next contract. Love the attitude and enthusiasm but damn, that's way too many carries for a guy his size. Gurley was bigger and his busiest year was around 250. Marshall too. Get all 3 involved.

In total though, you have to be excited about the RB postition. I don't think there would be a major drop off if anyone were to get injured. I mean, I get Williams is a TD machine but think any of them can move the chains consistently.

Carrying the team for the whole season is a little bit of a stretch.

The BIG question is what The Rams are willing to keep Kyren Williams?
That said,The Rams are playing there cards Perfect with adding Corum & Hunter.Depth is Huge !!

This year being a contract year, Kyren will want the ball all of the time. He wants incredible numbers with which to bargain. The fans and the coaches want balance. Balance means he can be easily replaced in 2026.

Big fan of Coach Ron Gould what an upgrade over Ra'Shaad Samples, who just was not ready for the NFL. Coach Gould quickly won the room with "If you don't block, you don't tote the rock." Stressing pass protection too from all of his backs.

Kyren is a pro and is everything you would want in a RB, in fact, I realize people want longer runs, but Kyren showcased his explosiveness hitting the hole, there was a big difference between him & Corum and you could see it, now enter Jarquez Hunter and I will temper my enthusiasm because I have not seen much of him, but speed was a need and it appears Hunter has plenty of it.

That leaves Rivers, Schrader & Jordan Waters. Waters is the biggest at 6'0 225lbs a giant in the RB room. Rivers is willing and feisty and I have not seen much of Cody Schrader, but being a Missouri alum our own @Memento is a fan of Schrader's game, so let the games begin as the RB room looks stacked and glad Coach Gould is in charge.

I just have this nagging feeling that Kyren should have signed his extension before the draft

It bugs me that he's the biggest RB we have**. I know Omarion was out of our reach, but I really wanted one of the bigger, faster RB's in this great RB draft with some size, like Ollie Gordon II. 6'1", 226 lbs...
oh yikes 4.61 40 yd...***
WELCOME TO THE RAMS, JARQUEZ!!!

...but back to my post, Jarquez is "5-foot-9, 204-pound" & Gould says "he's a heavier guy, he's a guy who can go north and south". Maybe with pads on, he's talking about how hard he hits?? I mean we know he can jump out of a pool, maybe that's what he means.

Current roster:
Kyren - 5-9 - 202 (4.65)
Cody S - 5-9 - 214 (4.61)
Rivers - 5-9 - 192** (4.57)
Blake - 5-8 - 210 (4.53)
Hunter - 5-9 - 204 (4.44)

According to the rams website roster page, Cody Schrader is our biggest / heaviest RB.
All that said, I don't care who carries the rock, if we go deep in the playoffs that's what matters. I'm excited to see how we work these guys into the game plan. FYI, currently, our fastest RB's are Hunter (4.44) & Blake (4.53).

**Wiki says his combine measured at 5'-7.5"...

Sadly not a Mizzou alum. Never went to college, barely graduated high school. Learned more in the real world and reading books outside of the classroom than I ever did in the classroom.

I'm just a huge Mizzou fan who has watched them at their worst and best.

Would love to see this duo take the first half, and KW the 2nd half.
Get the D wore out chasing Hunter's 4.44 speed. KW grinds them down in the 2nd. Ball game B-)

What are your thoughts on The Kronke’s and there enterprise?

That doesn’t get discussed much.Had a HS/Jr I’d say friend, maybe more of a mentor who liked to Razz me.He knew his limits, plus was a grade ahead in BBall.

My story goes like this on following a persons career & knowing his Life.Plus his dad was a Big(little)Time HC.He played college ball & wasn’t going to start his Senior season. There was a Freshman who was promised the job. He made the best of his career & became a student coach.

Anyways he finally got a chance as a Big Time Big12 assistant with Mizzu under Quinn Snyder in 99-2000. Following his career now is pretty cool to know the players & history that he’s touched making it to The NBA as a long time assistant.

Anyways looking at his Wikipedia it’s grown. He never made it big,but in this name I add up History & connect a Tea Leaf of a root from this HOF coach in one way or another.
—It’s easy to forget The Greats & where they came from!! Phil Jackson loved this guy.Parts of my memory has gone away in time.Reflection isn’t a bad thing sometimes.
—Memento I’d say I like that you know who you are & are a very good person.Big heart for sure.I’m a USC Fan & never went there. In fact reflecting back same with csulb.
