NFL to hold veteran FA combine

Well it's an idea anyway, I think we'll see some things that will surprise us , like 40 times that are surprisingly slow 225 reps that aren't what you expect .
Functional strength and game speed come from experience getting that first step ahead of the other guy IMO makes vets.look faster and actually play faster than the stopwatch indicates

I wonder if this would be open to vets from the CFL and Arena league. I think it is a great way for teams to target positions of need and possibly find some steals.

I think it is a stupid idea. The NFL is just trying to generate more buzz and TV revenue. Are the Pro personnel people so so incompetent at watching film and knowing who is on which team that they now need a Free Agent combine? Every team in the league has a guy that monitors this stuff all year round. Devanney used to be pro personnel for the Falcons and that is how he knew about guys like Amendola, Laurent, Gibson, etc...

I could see it for Canadian football players and guys from indy leagues or that were not on a roster for the recent season. Otherwise it is a bunch of hooey.

I really do like this idea a lot! I'm a huge fan of the IFL and AFL leagues. There is a lot of nfl "vets" that actually straightened out and became productive. So who knows. I hope it draws attention to people like Ronnell Lewis of the Spokane Shock. Ex-lion draft pick whose young and plays OLB

Not only will Michael Sam be needing his dancing shoes next month, but he’ll also need his overnight bag.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Sam has been invited to the league’s inaugural veteran combine on March 22.

That’s within six days of the start of filming for Dancing With The Stars, in which he’s participating this season.

Sam said this week his first priority was football, and the show was flexible enough to accommodate him if he need to attend the event in Arizona or other workouts for NFL teams.

It’s a big step for him in his goal to get back to the NFL, as he takes steps on the dance floor at the same time.

Michael Sam’s not going to be the only curiosity at the NFL’s first veteran combine on March 22.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, former first-round quarterback Vince Young will be there taking part as well.

Young had allegedly retired, and taken a job at the University of Texas, but he apparently has the itch to play again.

He’s been out of the league since being cut by the Browns last offseason (roll that around in your head for a moment), saying at the time his retirement was “definitely official, I think in my book.”

Young made a pair of Pro Bowls with the Titans, but also floundered through stints with the Eagles, Bills and Packers as well.

This veteran combine idea is good for the players who have come back from injuries or were otherwise marginalized and out of the league. It also provides some needed inventory for the league’s own television network during an otherwise slow time of the year.

This is great for guys like Michael Sam and Vince Young. Makes their names relevant again, gives Sam a re-do on his poor combine showing last year and gives Young a chance to show off the physical talents that made a team want to take him no.3 overall in the first place.

I don't think Michael Sam will make a team, but at least he has an opportunity.

I don't see any player that was active last year for at least 12 games being at this showcase, and I think getting 100 players might be a bit of a stretch

It's a good idea because it is up to the players. The rookie scouting combine is necessary for most of the guys, but this veteran combine is completely optional....no way a Rodney Hudson does it.

It's a great way for guys that weren't playing to get a second shot at impressing.
