PAY THE MAN, SNEAD!!!

Y’know… something occurred to me and maybe it has occurred to others but you think coaches will instruct their RBs to get down rather than go for extra yards with the potential of Landman punching it out?

I went ahead and moved all the boxing posts to its own thread in the General Sports forum. I also added a poll if yawlz are interested.

I felt the subject deserved its own thread as does Landman.

Not bad for a guy that is only guaranteed $75,000 this season..... I really want to get his jersey, but he will be gone next season.

He believed in himself and it paid off. It would be cool if we decided the position was important enough to keep him.

I have two preferences for ILBs personally, those being range and tackling sureness. Landman isn't the rangiest ILB, but I am quite happy with his production including his forced fumbles. Also Speights is about the same in range, but has stopping power which is very nice. When he hits a ball carrier they stop and that is valuable too.

But I wouldn't go out of my way to retain either of these two. Way I see it is if you are special as an ILB, which to me means you can range sideline to sideline and snuff out running QBs in the open field, then I would be willing to pay the position. Otherwise fuggedaboutit. I am perfectly happy going through these guys like teams do with RBs, bring one in every year and keep the competition good in the room.

Landman isn't the rangiest, but he gets the job done, and he's shown an ability to be a spy/blitzer as well as a sure tackler against the run; he's one of the reasons, along with Ford, why teams are having a hard time running against us.

Plus, he was nominated a captain. Can't afford both him and Quentin Lake to leave, and the Rams seemingly value safeties the same as they value inside linebackers.

Good analysis. I like rangy guys too. But I think you may be understating the importance of creating turnovers. Landman will get paid because of those forced fumbles, and games are won because of them.

I don't know that we should factor in turnover creation under the term "production" like it's just another run stuff. Some production is better than others.

I certainly appreciate the turnovers Landman creates. But with the way this league is trending at QB with athletic ability and open field running it is crucial to be able to cover space and end those runs as quickly as possible.

Open field tackling ability & range.

That said I wonder what the Rams would cite as their priorities. They often do not agree with me. :laugh2:

Still think an in-season extension should be considered. If he keeps up, he along with Young will price themselves out of here. I know what this defense looked like with Reeder and Rosedick at ILB, "wasn't pretty" doesn't even fairly describe that crap. Landman will never be the best athlete on the field but he is proving his worth to this team every week.

We had a rangy Ogletree who would get there and then whiff. I think Landman and Speights ability to tackle and navigate through the trenches can't be overlooked. If we were finding LBs that can be the next man up like we do with DBs, I'd say yeah keep rotating them but we were with Reeder and Rozeboom so long

I think we can treat the MLB position like we do with Higbee and Big Rob. Neither are Pro Bowlers but are serviceable starters that don't break the bank.

Mobility means jack shit when you can't finish with the tackle. This is why being able to open field tackle, in my estimation at least, is crucial with all these scrambling QBs. It's only going to get worse.

If the Rams ink our ILBs it won't be the first time I disagree with it. I didn't want them to ink Williams either but I knew they would. Not sure about Landman, but just like with Williams if it happens I'll understand it. Just not what I'd do.

There are signings I hate. Like the Ogletree signing for example I was not happy. That shit demonstrated how bad our front office was too, the fact they didn't anticipate how that went down. They are far better now of course.

I'm curious on the Rams priorities too. You make a real good point on the need for range given the athletic QBs. Before your post, I had a clear preference for turnover creation, but I can see how great tackling plus range could possibly be just as inpactful.

Only problem with this is Landman may break the bank or at least severely damage it.

At his pace, he's gonna require Baun money - $16 or $17mil. per year.

We need to get it done. He's a serious difference maker on this defense

They couldn't dump him fast enough after that unforgivable whiff against the falcons in the playoffs. They learn quickly and aren't afraid to admit their mistakes.

NL is the best MLB we've had since Lauranitis. Speights is also very good, carries a truck stick (that hit on Taysom... dropped him like a rock) & attacks the ball carrier instead of waiting for them to come to him. <cough><coughreeder><cough>
But, range? we need range? Look no further than Dolac. This kid has all the range & tackles just as good if not better than anyone else on this team, despite his size. He has a nose for the ball & dives straight into the scrum.
In one season, Snead turned a major weakness on this team into a major strength.

Yes. They learn quickly now. But that trait came in with McVay. It is incredible the difference a top coach makes. Was the same with Vermiel, Rams were incompetent in evaluation prior to his tenure, then returned to incompetence after he left.
