Not to dismiss BY’s talents because 12 sacks is still pretty damn good and that pressure rate is nothing to sneeze at. But I have to wonder how many times he was NOT one on one. I guess we should see a pretty big jump this year if so.
From what I recall off the top of my head, he had a good amount of double-teams. He was about 7-9% points behind Verse in that.

Absolutely true.

But it wasn't his job to beat double teams when AD was here. Or when Verse came aboard. And it won't be his job with Garrett.

He was 2nd or 1st (2025) in QBH the last 3 years. He led the defense in TFL last 2 years and was third as a rookie. He seems to play the run really well.

Is his knee okay? If it is, I think this is an easy "break out" year for Young. Whether that means the Rams resign him or let him walk it's a win for the Rams. Somebody would pay good money to Byron Young and probably enough to get a 3rd round comp pick. And if they resign him, it'll be because he had a breakout year, which is good for the Rams.

I thought a breakout season was when you make a big jump in production from mostly mediocre type season.
wouldn't 12 sacks and all the QB hits and all his other stuff equate to a breakout season already. I mean, what do you have to do. He was rated top 10 edge rusher. Plus, don't forget the Rams don't always let him rush the passer. He might improve on last year, but he has already broke out.
Now if Forbes has a top 10 season or more likely Fergy has a great season, that would be a break out season.

Me thinks people underestimate ol' BY. That kid is a stud. Soft spoken stud, but stud none the less. I see 15+ sacks from the dude this year.
Needs to stay healthy, which means they need to have a solid back up so he doesn't have to play 60 snaps a game. Stewart is that guy, but they need more depth to spell Garrett as well. Des Johnson needs to step up this year. He has played well in spots, but he has to stay healthy and be consistent.

Yup. People seem to think he only got 12 sacks because of Verse. It’s asinine.
Verse helped take the attention off of him so yes Verse helped a lot by absorbing a team leading amount double teams his way but to say that was the only reason makes no sense as Young still has to get to the QB. The difference this upcoming year is teams are going to double team Garrett way more than Verse so Young will get way more one on one opportunities.

Bummed seeing Verse in a browns uni. I respect the trade and feel like we were missing that finisher which Garrett obviously is, but, I don't think I could have traded Verse just the same.
Were you also bummed seeing Goff in a Lions uni, but you respected the trade and felt like we were missing that finisher which Stafford was, but you dont think you could have traded Goff just the same?

Or not?

I think it's an understandable sentiment though. I think we improved the team. It's just kinda tough seeing Verse go and of all places, to be sent to Siberia.

Totally agree, I think its extremely understandable to be bummed to lose Verse yet still be super excited about Garrett. Never understand why some fans think you have to whole heartedly love every single aspect of a trade.

I wonder if this trade has a negative affect on Shula's HC opportunities? Like, he never had Aaron Donald on his defense while being the DC. If they enjoy extreme success, couldn't the viewpoint be, "well sure the defense was great. You guys traded for Garrett and McDuffie, signed Watson and the offense put opposing offenses in predictable situations. How'd you do without Donald, Garrett and McDuffie?"

However, a couple of things that should work in his favor are, while being a defense that finished #26 in yards allowed during the 2024 season, they finished #16 in points allowed. And last year it was #17 in yards allowed and #10 in points allowed. That suggests (to me) they bent but didn't break. Made plays when they had to. And of course we're all expecting that philosophy to change to a more aggressive approach this year, which with success will show Shula is a coach who can change his system to fit his personnel and have success in multiple approaches.
