3 and 4 -
play call - Quick Hit to Everette
I like the call. Get the ball to your big athletic TE.
Everette can make it difficult for a corner or safety type,to bring him down before
he drags them 4 yards.

But when the Rams lineup ,the defensive formation should tell you
very quickly that this is the wrong play
The bears lineup with a wide 9 end that makes Havensteins block almost impossible.
They have a Backer/hybrid lined up right behind the 3 technique.

Two defenders that the offense can't account for.Maybe the backer blitzes, but
the wide nine is still there.
The Rams are unbalanced, strong to the left with play going right.
Everthing about this play presnap says it's the wrong call.
On 3and 4 , why are we not calling a timeout or audibling ?

If I'm wrong, let me know.. Never too old to learn.
I just think that this is a call (especially on 3rd and short) that you have to get out of.

.

As soon as he started his throwing motion you knew the play would get stuffed. Sometimes i wonder why he still throws the ball in those situations.

I remember the defense calling the screen on this play.

There were several plays on the sweeps that got busted up and the fumble, my least favorite. McVay getting too fancy.
The fumble was just a mismatch, Mundt played for Higbee.
Mundt is 20lbs lighter than Higbee and had the misfortune
of having to block Robert Quinn, on that play. Higbee would have
been more suited to hold off Quinn long enough for Woods to get
outside.

Yeah, I remember being irritated that we ran that. As you said, it was clear presnap that they were stacked to stop it. Gotta be able to audible out there.

It feels like those WR/TE screens ALWAYS work on 1st/2nd down and almost NEVER on 3rd - I think they actually have worked a few times on third and short but I'd rather he scrapped them for third downs

Yeah I didn't like that call either in that situation. Was going to put that up as well nice job.

More I watched it, the more I felt like Goff threw it too early. Had he held it, that action may have sucked the DL to him hard to say. Screens are about deception, so if the QB dishes too quick OR if the OL let the defense through too quick they can sense what's up.

But again that call when we need 4 yards against that front? I think McVay would like to have it back. :beer2:

My least favorite play was in the opening drive of the 2nd half.

We drove to the Chicago 49, 3rd and 2.... we drop back for a Goff sack/fumble. I definitely run it there, maybe twice. It felt more like the message to send at that moment in the game.

3rd & 2 at CHI 49
-9 Yard Sack
(12:39) (Shotgun) J.Goff sacked at LA 43 for -8 yards (K.Mack). FUMBLES (K.Mack) [K.Mack], recovered by LA-A.Corbett at LA 42.

I get the logic on running on 3rd and 2 especially if you plan on going for it in 4th down. But I also get passing it on obvious run downs when they are stacking the box.

in fact, against a tough physical defense like the bears i like a quick pass there. Giving Havenstein help vs Mack there seemed important, not sure why they didn’t.
