Good question......A legitimate question I have and in no way do I think this is the reason AT all, but for arguments sake.. if the Rams had a winning season and made the Playoffs, would he be considering taking time off?
This all started last year right after the SB win. Will he take an easier job in the booth? The Rams extended him, either as incentive to stay or a thank you for staying. Surely they did not give him as much money as Amazon was prepared to give, so the 'incentive to stay' angle doesn't fit. Thank you seems more plausible. So, was it really transitioning to the booth or did he have issues last year?
He's coached the longest possible season twice in 6 years (at that time twice in 5 years). Sure Belichick has done that more than anybody else. Andy Reid is a close second. But those two guys aren't exactly the models of how to balance football and life. Belichick acts like a 12 year old when he loses. And listening to him talk when things are going right isn't like listening to Tony Robbins. To me, the guy has always seemed a little "off".
Reid has had family issues with his sons who have seemed to be crying for attention for years. Guns, heroin, DUI (way back in his Philly days) and finally almost killing a young girl in KC. Coaching in the NFL requires supreme focus on being successful with little room for anything else and most times that success doesn't happen. It's probably easier for older guys to live with that imbalance.
Steve Spurrier tried it the other way and that didn't even work temporarily. "IT'S HARD TO WIN IN THE NFL" may not be a statement about the X's and O's and Johnny's and Joe's. It takes a sacrifice we can only imagine. So I'm gonna give McVay a pass. He's young. He's reached the pinnacle of the sport. And maybe he's wondering if it's had an adverse affect on his life and he isn't sure he's prepared to accept that. We can ask, 'shouldn't he have known that?' but we know the right answer.
If he leaves, I wish him well and hope at some point he returns to the NFL. If he doesn't leave, I hope he doesn't burn out. It's fun to listen to him talk football. He's fun to watch when he's excited. And it's fun to watch him celebrate success. Which is why it's really hard to watch what's happening now.
Is he letting the franchise and the players down? Are you fucking kidding me? Obviously, with their reactions the answer is NO. Is he letting the fans down? Absolutely. Because we don't don't want to hear about stress or balance or even sanity. We just want to watch our team kick ass! It takes an event like the Damar Hamlin near death experience to even temporarily distract us. So maybe we should give him a little slack?
It's interesting to read all the different takes and I wonder if any will be accurate once things shake out. Just wanted to bring a little levity to the discussion.
