Nothing gets more clicks than QB talk
And when combined with some McVay retiring speculation….

Orlovsky's claim that NFL GMs share his opinion that Simpson is better than Mendoza is countered by Kiper, Jr. who says that's not what he's hearing from his own sources. Theoretically, maybe both statements are correct in that neither is worthy of a high first-round selection. Again, I say "theoretically". Orlovsky seems like the contrarian even among other ESPN analysts. One argument says that Simpson didn't benefit as much as Mendoza did in his situation at Indiana. While that may be true, the counter is that Simpson himself wasn't lacking in resources or opportunities as well at Alabama, of all places. The difference was that Mendoza was clearly the difference-maker who lifted his team to higher success. Another argument was that if Simpson was taller, he'd be ranked higher. This is where the Mac Jones comparison came in. Either way, he would still need to sit and watch before reaching his full potential.

In any case, I really don't have a problem with Ty Simpson, but I'm certainly not high on him as a draft pick in the first or even second round in this year's class. The QB position tends to be overrated every year in the draft and this looks to be the case again this year. Tua Tagovailoa...Trey Lance...Zach Wilson...Justin Fields...C.J. Stroud...Bo Nix...Michael Penix, Jr. Any of these names ring a bell? Sure, any one of these guys can still have a solid NFL career in time even with a closing career window--see Sam Darnold--but the point remains that quarterbacks tend to be over-drafted probably more than any other position in the draft. Speaking of Darnold...I've said before that I can see Simpson reaching a similar stature but with less arm talent and moxie.
