In theory I agree.
I wrote off Noteboom too soon once, I won't go it again.
That said, his time to return from the injury is key as well. Every injury is different and every recovery is different. You may well be right that the loss of explosiveness may doom him. But, we don't know yet.
The issue is the realistic ability to add top quality players at any of the OL spots.
The FA market is limited this year.
Try to trade for a LT when everyone knows you need one is sort of like walking into a car dealership and proclaiming "I desperately need a car.....TODAY."....you're going to get fleeced.
But who knows? Maybe they can swing something.
I think its more likely they land a mid level interior lineman like Davis from Tenn who would improve Edwards G spot for likely $6-7 M a year.....a manageable amount.
They've already invested in Allen and Shelton, they aren't going anywhere.
They can play well and play well together, as we saw against the Raiders....zero sacks or pressures given up by those two.
3 5th of the OL is set for next year.
LT and LG are up in the air.
It will be interesting to see how it is approached.
I have learned to never say never with this FO.
I agree and there have been way better LT with similar injuries that have gone down and never been the same. I was a big proponent of noteboom being a better at LT because of his quickness as opposed to strength than a guard but he wasn't playing to well prior to the injury but maybe in time he might have settled in however I'd bet dollars to donuts that the rams are not willing to risk it next year. Again maybe Tunsil but I don't know who or where I believe there will be a legit LT here next year. Booms best shot is hitting the gym and maybe guard and at his current salary not overpaid as a guard.

One does not do business in that way. What Mayfield felt and the responsibility of other teams GM's are apples and oranges.

It is so obvious to me that no one else put in the option because they did not want to waste 1.3 mill because they plainly did not want Baker.
How many teams are bringing in a new QB for the last five games? It's basically a vote of no confidence in the QBs you have, with little time to integrate the new guy and no guarantee he returns next season. Pretty pointless and disruptive in most situations.

Suggests to me the Rams are not certain Stafford will be back next year, even if only on purely medical grounds, and are looking ahead to see if Mayfield could be the guy if Stafford doesn't return or is on extended medical leave.

If the players expected declare, this isn't a weak QB class.
I think Will Levis and Anthony Richardson have already declared but Michael Penix is staying-put.

Right now ... very early ... Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud seem like the top QB prospects.

I liked what I saw, sure. But it has been said Baker has problems when expectations are big.
I think we will get a whole lot better idea of Baker-McVay deal after he has 11 days of prep with McVay.
He, at least he will know his teammates names by then.
He was just throwing to positions he thought would be open without knowing much more. It was kind of a seat of the pants thing. Like when we were kids telling some other neighborhood kid to cut left at the fire hydrant.
A lot of fun for him and the Rams.
Now get down to business.
All too true... still Mayfield was very impressive under the circumstances. To me the question is, if they sign him, and need him to start or at least play a big role going forward, can McVay and a new OC coach him up to a level of consistent reads and good decisions?

Again mcvay I'm sure has learned a valuable lesson this year. They aren't going to risk another season with this core in tact or more importantly Staffords health with maybes and possibilities at a huge position and a risk. As far as noteboom as a LT if he was above average or great he would have been an underpay if he can even come back and that's a big if it won't be risked at LT at the expense of the team and more importantly Staffords health.

Mcvay and Snead are also known to move on from players who have contributed far more than noteboom in a blink of an eye. If he is even able to play at a decent level it will be at guard where lateral movement isn't as crucial.

I don't think I've been more positive about a rams change than this. I don't know who or from where but unless Stafford retires or mcvay retires they will have an LT who can protect Stafford or whomever the qb is

Which players have McSnead moved on from who weren't free agents ? Which players were traded that didn't bring back some value or CAP relief ?

I don't believe Noteboom is necessarily the Rams long term answer at LT, even less so as a future LG prospect, but the Rams should try to rehabilitate his trade value before unnecessarily unloading him for little to no return. The Rams may or may not be playing from a position of strength at LT next season, but with reserves such as Jackson, Nsekhe, a likely 2023 mid or late round OT draft pick and last years developmental OT in A.J. Arcuri, I'm not going to sweat our near-term ability to function with reasonable success at this position. I also hold McVay partially responsible for not employing a much better blocking TE who can chip opposing Edge rushers in support of our OT's.
I believe drafting a top LG/Center will bring a higher level of OL improvement for 2023 should the team avoid addressing the OL with an expensive free agent, and considering our CAP situation and other needs at Edge, RB, TE, DT, S & CB, I'm not seeing the Rams as big OL spenders during free agency next year. Edwards will be gone in free agency and we currently have no obvious starting LG, drafting an OG/Center helps settle two future needs now. jmo.

About evaluating Boom in ‘23.

It’s complicated by the fact that he was already playing hurt before the Achilles injury. They were forced to play him because of all the already devastating OL injuries they were dealing with.

Incidentally, I think Boom is only suited for 2 position.

LOT and RT and in that order.

Yeah, not a very strong class. There may end being a couple guys drafted in the 1st round, because teams do over draft QB to get that 5th year option, but not anyone moving up for. I dont see it in Stroud, he's your basic JT Barrett/Cardale Jones/Dwayne Haskins (RIP) type.

Yeah I was not impressed with CJ Stroud at all in the Michigan game. Haven't seen any other games but that game left a sour mark in my eye.

Michael Penix and Caleb Williams will make for a strong QB class with just those two in 2024

When Whit was injured I thought Boom did an excellent job. Maybe not Whit excellent but really didn't know Whit was missing.

They didn't throw franchise lT money at Boom just because. I understood the money and commitment.

I can't call Boom a bust. Although he sure didn't look the same this year. I hope we are all missing something here.
A starting edge is going to study film on his opponent for that week, and the focus of the staff is on the LT as well looking for tells and tendencies and also categorizing his weaknesses. So there is an enormous difference in looking good in spot start duty and even starting against a random couple opponents vs being the guy out of camp with each week's matchup prepping for you and your weaknesses. Starting LTs basically get much of the NFL's best edges and minds trying to dismantle their game every week and once they find the flaws it's relentless until you can counter them.

Boom had some decent moments but he got smoked in the predictable matchups, those being the edges who have power to their game. So I agree with you that he's not a bust. And I get why the Rams went with him for the season and all that. But there is still a lot of questions surrounding him. He is going to need to improve vs the power edges he will face and I know the guy works hard but these things are elements the team can only help him so much with.

For 2023 we're gonna have question marks at LT because of this. "Is Boom good enough" is the label for that one. Plus on top of that he has to stay healthy. And our resources are not deep this offseason for hedging that bet so no matter how we slice this one there will be some dice rolls going on.

The starting LT position will remain UNresolved way into 2023 preseason. The health of our two starting 2022 starting LT's much in doubt will cause other possible stop-gap options to be explored. Neither Alaric Jackson nor Joe Noteboom are going to be removed from the payroll even though both stand a good chance to be PUP'd when the 2023 season begins. I would sign Swing OT Ty Nsekhe just in case. Draft an LT.

Might be the Rams are currently giving strong workouts @ possible 2023 OG position prospects. Injured OG's Logan Bruss & Tremayne Anchrum are under contract for 2023. Injured OG Chandler Brewer/ LG/LT Zac Thomas, LG/OC Matt Skura, RG Oday Aboushi & Cole Toner all 5 OG's can be easily signed back to the roster if desired. Draft an LG.

I would hope that the center post is a duo-starting operation with Brian Allen & Coleman Shelton both standing ready to start. A 2023 2nd day drafted rookie will be required as the 3rd OC.

The RT unit has no needs Rob Havenstein/ AJ Arcuri & Max Pircher.

Yeah the LT position is a complete mess. I agree neither of our first two options are likely to be available to start next season. Nsekhe is learning the offense and barring him being injured, he’d be a good insurance policy.

What do our make of Pircher? Is he strictly a RT? With the disaster we’ve seen this ear he didn’t sniff the field. I just don’t get what the long game is for him.

Your not going to rehabilitate his trade value at the expense of an offense or worse yet someone else health. Perhaps any other position yes but not the LT position. Can't play games at that sot especially when your offense is awful but more importantly again your qb is at risk constantly.
They make moves all the time especially if they were wrong or didn't fit or injured.

Just a couple but also on not resigning certain people basically the point is they do what it takes attachment or not. If this was like Ernest Jones yes we could build him back up even cam akers hopefully however not with a LT he is responsible for what blindside Stafford or anyone not willing to take that chance.

I get your point but I'm sticking to my guns somehow some way this team will have a an upgraded LT.

That's fine, more varied opinions make for the interesting takes we fans get to discuss. While we can agree to disagree on this, in about 4/5 months we'll have most of our answers on what direction they choose.

If you mean the Rams, I have to ask .. How?
As we all clearly know these threads are all conjecture and the possibility of moving up in the draft requires trade partners.
I don't know who will hold the top picks nor do I know who will be rated where when the 2024 draft gets here.
BUT If we are playing the Stafford is retiring hypothesis then once 2024 gets here as of now we have our draft pool of 1 -6 with 2 6ths also we have 2025's and beyond's draft pools which gives us essentially the same leverage that we have used to both draft Goff & acquire Stafford.

The ability to move up is very likely there but obviously, we have a lot of questions to answer first, My comment is only in play IF Matt retires which I have absolutely no clue where that situation is going

That's Cool.

I didn't understand that you were assuming a scenario where the Rams would be just awful in 2023.

Boom just doesn't seem to have that dog in him. IMO he is a backup level LT that the Rams gave starter $. Just another bad contract if so. The Rams certainly know how to throw good money after bad over the last few years. Good thing they got that ring or things would be mega depressing around here.
