They may have no choice.
If teams are willing to pay him 50-60 mill, the Rams are fucked. They can’t pay him that on top of what’s left dead money wise.
Not sure I see the wisdom in allowing the agent to look around.
Just because they are willing to pay him doesn't mean the Rams have to agree to trade him just cause lol

Mid 1 or early 2 this year and a #2 next year that could elevate based on Stafford's play.

And if it's Pitt, I also want our 5th rounder back from the Dotson trade.
No 1st, no trade so fuck that early 2nd stuff. We by far have the best QB that could possibly be available. Snead needs to hunker down and play hardball on that one.

Oh no doubt. But they sure have created a conundrum by allowing this to happen. Alas, it’s always about the money
Yeah, its gotten messier for sure. Rams need to play hardball if he ends up wanting to leave. I know they haven't done that in the past but they really need to get the best value since that type of move can ease the next transition into building our next contending roster.

Lighten up, man!

Just kidding. I know you're a die-hard like most of us.

I also remember you were a bit freaked out a couple years ago that McVay was actually gonna retire... but hey, no worries in the end.

For some damn reason I'm still stubbornly optimistic that MS and the Rams will work it out. I think both sides are giving the appearance of "playing chicken" and "testing the market." But they both want to make it work. Rams want him for sure. And I just don't think MS is willing to jeopardize his legacy by giving up on a proven good thing....and starting over from scratch in the unknown. Lord knows he doesn't NEED the money at this point, it's all about ego and legacy now.

Besides... let's just wait and see if @El Chapo Jr's balls start tingling....

The disadvantage the Rams have is that a team that trades for him doesn’t have to worry about the near 50 mill of dead cap that the Rams have to deal with.
This has nothing to do with another team in a trade, but it’s all the more reason for the Rams to say “If we are eating this dead money then we better be getting a first round pick for Stafford”

Teams don’t ever eat dead money when they trade for a player. They aren’t eating any salary which would normally increase trade value. The dead money is ultimately why they have to trade him.
Bottom line, agent finds out what teams are willing to pay him, they realize they can’t so they negotiate trade. That is not dealing from a strength. What would help would be a bidding war for his service.

I'm gonna call it like it is. The Rams are the best team right now that Stafford could play for that gives him the best chance to win another Lombardi and solidify himself as a HOF'er. Could he get more money from another QB needy team? I would bet good money that he could. But does he want to go to a team (like the Giants) who have little going for them, their coach and GM probably on the hottest seat imaginable just for some more pay? I sure as shit wouldn't but I'm not an NFL QB.

At the end of the day, as much as I love Stafford, the Rams are running this team like a business - and they should at the moment. As fans we don't have to agree with all the moves but we have to respect them. McVay and Snead have a plan in place for this team and if Stafford values the money above all us, fair enough but he's now on the outside looking in. It's in the best interest of everyone to allow Stafford and his agent to see what he's worth. The Rams hold his rights so at the end of the day we hold some of the leverage here - it's not like Stafford is a free agent.

I feel this is definitely a "short-term pain, long-term gain" situation with the Rams should they choose to trade Stafford. And really it's all up to him at this point, I'm sure the Rams have communicated all they can to him and his agent.

I’m good with Stafford getting a raise as long as there’s enough Cap $$ for AJax, Hoecht, Spoon, starting WR (DRob or better) and starting CB (Reed) or ILB (Baun/Bolton).

My balls are tingling, but not in Stafford's favor.....maybe it'll change. I'll shake em up like the magic 8 ball and hopefully get a good answer later on or just end up in the emergency room lol

That’s the problem. I don’t think there is unless they kick the can down the road and find themselves in cap hell

Excellent, concise summary.

The only comment I would add (not changing anything) is the simple point that I do NOT assume there is anything contentious between Stafford / his reps and the Rams' organization. These are EXPERIENCED professionals; and this is part of the business of the NFL, aging elite players, salary cap management and other grown-up-stuff.

This is what I’ve been saying….if the Rams move on from Stafford, it’s not going to be about Les Snead getting the best haul. They are going to let Stafford pick his team, and get the best deal possible with that team.

My money is on Pittsburgh with Minnesota as the dark horse.

That sounds like a problem then :)

If it helps, IMO, the best FA LB is not Baum or Bolton; will not cost anywhere near as much + signijg him weakens a rival

Early signs indicate that Greenlaw will not be back with the 49ers. Go get him! He’s great

If the Rams move on from Stafford, it’s because they determine his contract value with other teams is not possible to match and therefore have to go separate ways. And for sure they will seek the best deal for the Rams.

It's over. He's going to have teams selling themselves and their programs plus the money he wants. Oh well, we'll always have Paris. :trophy:
