This... and I'm sure there are people on here who've done their fair share of negotiations... is all fairly standard.

Nothing, including the timing, should lead us to believe this isn't getting done.

Now maybe new information will arise but this is all par for the course.

No one's going to move before they need to move here and with Stafford saying he's coming back to play for another year, the urgency doesn't need to be there.

I would not be shocked if the Rams haven't even given him a proposal yet.
I'm also onboard thinking we'll get this done as these negotiations aren't obviously so cut and dry. I'm just discussing the other side of it that some may not want to realistically hear. I honestly don't like even thinking about it but its part of the equations these GMs have to figure out for the short and long term goals of the teams they run.

With the Giants picking #3, Ward may not be there.
Yeah I figure he's got the proverbial snowball's chance in hell of being at 3. I really like Cam. He looks downfield, has the arm and balls you need in the position. He'll go 1 overall because someone will jump for him as per usual if the team at the top doesn't want QB. Definitely a major longshot to get to 3.

If the Rams were to do that then I would prefer they take Dart and park him behind Jimmy. But it's always a dicey proposition to say ok we'll move down for a QB, because there may be a team that is ready to reach for him. The supply and demand side of it makes it really tough to predict.

If they want Dart I'd rather they just suck it up and take him at 26 or after a move down. Then park him behind Stafford and you know you're safe to redshirt him in the offense and let him soak up how a badass prepares. Though he may not have a chance to get to 26. Teams are desperate so you definitely have to earmark another option and be ready to position where you know you can get him.

This draft has some really intriguing projects. Guys with some tools who the Rams could park on the bench behind Stafford. Who might be around for a while.

I was on-the-fence.

Obviously, I am a very funny guy.

Seriously though, I have enjoyed the hell out of the past two seasons; and would be very disappointed to see the Rams make a change at quarterback. Without legit draft pick compensation and significant cap relief, I don't see anything positive in moving-on from Matthew Stafford at this time.
I think we all want Stafford back very badly. We are however at the mercy of Stafford and the Rams figuring it out so we can just stop talking about it and talk about how we can try to get another Lombardi.

Saying a rookie is going to suck before he ever plays is crazy to me. Is it being ranked a weak class? Yes. Doesn't mean that none of the QBs in this draft will develop into something special. I'd trust McVay way more than anyone on here if he feels that he can do something with a young QB. Would I be nervous about it? Hell yeah I would lol. I stated a while back that McVay hasn't developed a young QB and had enough patience to keep him around long term. We all thought that was the case with Goff but he couldn't wait for him to obviously develop more under his tutelage.
I mean, there's a chance I could be wrong on this, of course! But there's a lot of data that points to these QBs having a terrible road to being top QBs in the league and just a so-so road to being productive.

Bo Nix, who has no business being as good as he was went to the only situation I believe would have worked for him. So circumstances matter.

Reports are that they like Garoppolo and he would be the back up option if they can't work things out with Stafford.
I feel like you keep mentioning these reports, but I have not seen any. Can you provide links?

Worse QB's than Jimmy G have won Super Bowls. Just saying.
To clarify, my point was that Jimmy won't win you a Super Bowl, not that you can't win one with him. (Although, I think that's unlikely to happen.) Stafford can win you a Super Bowl (i.e., be the driving force). Jimmy is a guy who's along for the ride.

I'm still not sold on Dart.

I’m not sold on Dart either after I watched more of him.

Okay, here's a question:

Betting odds, percentages, whatever....

At the end of the day, how likely is it Stafford is a Ram next season?

I'd say 80%.
99.9%
This is just silly talk as they come to a middle ground between Sneads desire for one year deal and stafford wanting two years.

For S&Gs, the only trade that makes sense is a trade that gives you a top 5ish pick this year to draft a QB. You can’t bank on a drafted QB next year - who knows what that looks like and the future picks as well.

Even if you went with a non drafted new QB (JG or a FA), you don’t trade stafford with that dead cap hit unless it’s a prime draft pick coming back. That’s unlikely. Not to mention unlikely stafford wants to go elsewhere unless it’s a team that contend for SB.

Is there a reason to think he's fallen off? He looked pretty good in week 18.
I tend to discount week 18 games a bit and I think it helped that LaFleur was calling plays and harder to game plan for... but I concede that you might like what you saw in that game.

I do think you have to go back to his tenure with the Raiders and see just how bad he was. There's a reason no one signed him to start after that.

He's also a glass animal which I don't think gets better with age. (issue with the Raiders)

Jimmy barely throws over the middle of the field as a QB which is a problem in itself and with a year +1 from being a regular starter and an already average arm, I don't think he's gonna ever throw a pass again over the middle, he won't be able to drive it (I'm being sorta hyperbolic). (Issue with the 9ers, got worse with the Raiders)

Still, I think you could squeeze a .500 season out of him with the right cast.

I'd say they'd have a shot at being competitive. But not "very" with Jimmy.

Look, I think entertaining what it would look like to move on from Stafford is a worthwhile exercise this year (if we could somehow square the cap hit) but in doing that, you're gonna take some crazy lumps next year without a QB. Jimmy's not it. No QB drafted this year will be. And I don't think anyone from the FA market will be it.

If I'm entertaining this, it's with the idea that I can be around a .500 team next year with a bleh QB and then drafting the QB of the future with picks in 2026.
Except one could argue that the Rams were very competitive the last three games of the season in 2024 (that mattered), with Stafford playing like dog shit.
