Mahomes was considerably better than Purdy… Flip the QB’s, who wins that game?
In terms of talent, Mahomes is overall a better QB than Purdy. But you infer that a team can't win a Lombardi with Purdy. IMO that isn't the case. Mahomes plays on a team that is completely tailored to Mahomes skillset in terms of scheme and players. Purdy's Niners are not in a scheme that specifically always plays to Purdy's strengths. The roster is built as a run first offense because that is what Shanahan's offense is.
It's no different with Goff. People criticized him in the same way. I made the same type of statements that the offense wasn't playing to Goff's strength. The trade of Goff to Detroit has validated my contentions. In Detroit, they are tailoring the offense around his skill set in terms of scheme and players. The trade brought Stafford to LA where his skill set was already a match for both the scheme and players.
Goff is now judged to be a top 10 QB talent. They came within one game of the Super Bowl and lost not because of Goff but because they need to continue to build their defense.
All I've been saying is that Rams fans must not sleep on Purdy. If Shanahan ever gets his head out of his butt and tailors that offense to Purdy's skillset, then the Rams need to watch the fuck out and not take him for granted. People say Purdy has a weak arm but he led the NFL in deep pass efficiency! You don't do that with a weak arm. Purdy's strength is his ability to go through his progressions and make good decisions evidenced by his low INT numbers.
As long as Purdy is in SF I hope Shanahan stays run centric with his defense. They will because they are paying a mint for McCaffery. Teams know that by shutting down the Niners' run then you take away 60+% of Shanahan's offense. His passing offense can be very good but is predicated on the run threat. Without that threat it makes it easier to beat their offense.
In McVay's current offensive scheme, a Purdy like QB would thrive. His passing schemes have been shortened to attack the intermediate zone first allowing for the QB to get rid of the ball faster. Williams provides a good balance for the passing attack. He's not a take it to the house from anywhere on the field type of RB. But has proven he can get significant chunk yardage.
McVay's offense is about getting that chunk yardage via pass or run and continuing to move the chains. Stafford will take the deep strike if it's there. If his presnap read is that that deep strike isn't there his primary focus will be on the intermediate zone routes. Both Nacua and Kupp are excellent at getting open in those situations because they read DBs well.
Penix in an interview talked about a QB doing that both presnap and post snap....i.e. knowing from DB body position where he's going to throw his pass which he does with velocity and accuracy. That is exactly what McVay wants out of his QB. Stafford does it, and Purdy is learning how to do it. Don't sleep on Purdy he's a developing talent.
