In a span of just over three years, Tyrann Mathieu has gone from NFL draft pariah to franchise cornerstone in Arizona.

The Cardinals have agreed to terms with the NFL's most versatile defensive back on a five-year, $62.5 million extension averaging more than $12 million annually, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via sources informed of the deal. The contract calls for $40 million in guarantees, Rapoport added.

It's telling that the organization rewarded Mathieu as the game's highest-paid safety despite a December ACL tearthat could leave him at less than peak form entering the 2016 season.

As we recently witnessed in the Amazon Prime video series All or Nothing: A Season with the Arizona Cardinals, Mathieu has succeeded beyond all reasonable expectations in transitioning from a troubled character risk in college to a precocious team leader beloved by his teammates and coaches in the desert.

Rapoport has reported since May that the Cardinals view the charismatic young star as the face of franchise, integral not just to their football plans but also to their community efforts.

I like it when our division rivals get their best players in to their big $$ contracts. Its so painful seeing them get top talent on cheap rookie deals - now at least he is a cap obstacle to overcome.

Great player, but he sure seems injury prone.
lot of money to be sure...and he's had some bad injuries too...strange...

Tru just got that much harder to re-sign...

HoneyBadgers college film was awesome tho....man I liked what he did...but I figured he was too little to last...

40 games in 3 seasons - skewed because his two season ending injuries came late in the year, and both could have easily come early in the season.

And it's $40 million guaranteed, so the Cards could really be hurting if he has a third knee injury

Based on $$$ and production that seems a bit of an over inflated contract especially for a midget safety.

I'm not sure he's even close to being a top five safety by he's getting paid like one.

True. So what do you think AZ fans will think when we extend AD??

I was wrong about this guy and thought he was going to struggle and fail in the NFL.

@Mackeyser tried to talk me into him but I was having none of it and boy would I like to see him in a Rams uni on this defense right now.

Oh well.

Might be an overpay but he's an important cog in their defense. With that said there's no way I pay Tru that next year.
