Given how salaries increase annually, slotting in at number 10 with the last contract is probably about right for the 20th to 30th best TE in the league. In a couple years that’s likely to be where his contract slots.

Next year h not even be top 15 paid TE. Doesn’t change the numbers just the reality of contracts.
$15.5-M guaranteed though, so it seems like they've designed a low-risk investment to reward a hard-working player with a team-wide rapport, entering his prime. What other TE are going to walk through the door and be reliable cogs in our offense? Why take that gamble when you have the player you need already?

I really don't like this deal whatsoever. We were asking the Vikings for a 6th last year for him. I have never seen Higs stand out worthy of this type of money. I trust Snead/McVay they have earned it, but this deal is a major head scratcher.

And the CBA... They could up the % in the formula in the new CBA for the cap. That is an obvious change the players will push for.
We would have to see what the incentives are, but you have to think whatever they are, he hasn't hit them yet.
Which would mean that this contract is really 4 years 15.5 million - much better. And if he does hit the incentives, it means he's more productive - so a win/win.
Backup? He took twice as many snaps over the year, took as many snaps as Everett the last few weeks and was the listed starter. I get Everett was more of a relieving option but Higbee started, played and is a far superior blocker.
Blocks well, has improved each year and had some huge catches last season.....Glad he's in horns!
We remember the missed TD catches Higbee had. Other than those he has made some nice catches and gotten some good YAC while bounding defenders. He has caught 24 of 34 targets (70.6% Catch rate) which is good with a solid 294 yards. Many times he is an outlet or last resort target as well. Given more opportunity, his numbers would project near top TEs. Higbee is a very good blocker in both the run game and pass protection. So an average annual salary of $7,756,250 might be high but, as a free agent next year I'm sure a team that wanted to expand his receiving role would give him the same or more. He is healthy and in his prime. I didn't think the Rams would give him that high an average salary. They do like to pay players they decide to keep.

I am not hating Higbee. but isn't it easier to trade a guy if you sign him to a new deal? We did that with Alec Ogletree. Signed him to a 4 year deal, and then traded him to the Giants 4 months later...
While I legitimately laughed at that, in all fairness to Mr. Barron, I do recall him being more of a false start machine than a turn style.
I get his value to our team but don't agree with the contract based on how TE's are used in our offense. Not sure about this one honestly..we have MUCH higher priorities that money should be allocated for. Kupp, MP, JJ are all far more impactful imo.
Also what does this contract say about Everett?? Not developing as they hoped would be my guess to pay Higbee like that. Interesting because all the news this off-season was about how good Everett looked.

It doesn't kick in until next year. Probably won't be top ten by then

I don’t agree with this...Higbee is good but not Kelce or Gronkowski good. I think they could of held off a bit.
I expect that to change as well. Along with several other things like the drug testing policy, and possibly roster size and game day roster size, reviews, challenges and maybe some other things too.
This CBA will probably see more major changes than any in a long time.
I see the league caving in on the revenue split and not testing for weed in exchange
