Im with you in that id like to see the offense do that as well...but even if they dont there is no way you should be able to lose that game up that many points and that much time left
I agree. We just see it differently in terms of team unit expectations I guess.

It wasn’t complimentary football. We probably agree there. Cheers.

I agree with the OP and it is patently obvious that the quality of this team is on the offensive side of the ball. But in a real game, in a playoff environment, you are going to run into a game where your offense gets shut down.

Look at all the greatest offenses. Our own GSoT was shut down in Tampa and slowed considerably in the title game by Tennessee. The offense got all the headlines, but that Lombardi was equally earned by the defense. The epic Vikings offense that went apeshit in the regular season with Moss and those dudes (556 points) got dunked whent they could only muster 21 points in Atlanta. Even that Cheatriots 16-0 team with the offense that put up 560 points (for reference our 2021 title team put up 460) got fucking merc'd by a defense, that one being the Giants unit that Spags pushed to the fore for the playoff run.

Basically if you don't have a good enough defense you go home in the playoffs. And by good enough what I mean is when that game hits where your offense shits the bed, gets outplayed, or otherwise is not themselves--and it is very likely to happen at some point in a playoff run--your defensive unit has to do the job.

If we get the Rams defense that showed up in the first half of the season we may get this done. But if it's the recent version, we're gonna be out on our asses by the NFCCG. This is the honest truth here. So hopefully these boys are ready for a full team run where everyone pulls, because without that it doesn't happen. Offense alone cannot win you a title.

You're up 16 with 8 minutes left in the game. Obviously what you have been doing is working, why not keep playing your game? You get conservative and your offense strays away from your game and can't get a first down. Your defense goes prevent and the opponent walks it straight down the field and scores. Keep playing the game that got you there.

All true. And with this defense in particular I'd say I would never take my foot off the gas on offense. Because they can't cover for shit.

This is the exact reasoning why I never understood why they change anything.

I think 3 scores in the 4th is when you can probably go conservative, not 16 points but 21 points or more.

Wasn't Ratboy's infamous collapse more than that (with the Failcons)? I can't recall but I remember it being a lot.

The defenses and offenses for both teams typically play more aggressive in those ituatuons. So what you have been doing that point may not scematically fit anymore.

Because the way that the other team is playing changes...on both sides of the ball. They typically start playing more aggressive because they have to..they also are okay with you trying to match it because it opens the opportunity for you to make a mistake and to not eat clock.

That game is a pretty good example for this debate about what do to while ahead.

The falcons passed the ball quite a bit while ahead.
True. I think the key is not to play into expectations. If the defense knows you're gonna burn clock with the run game, and you can't run it with them knowing that, then you gotta put in effort to stay ahead of the chains as if you don't have a lead.

On a side note and as it pertains to the Rams... We have the run game to mash your ass late on offense even if you know it's coming. Assuming, of course, that we have our starting 5 linemen. This is part of the reason why the Rams are a real threat in the NFC.

The way I see it, the Rams are built to win more than any other team. Some teams have good defenses. But not as good on offense. Some teams have good offenses but not as good on defense. Rams defense has struggled some lately. But this is the playoffs now. I have a feeling we will see them return to form. Especially with Quentin Lake returning from IR. His presence is huge. The team knows that too. Which is why they didn't wait to extend him.

Sitting back in a weak zone doesn't work either. They chunk their way down the field for a couple of minutes and score.

Sort of Depends on the opponent.

EG Both sides failed in Settle. Although Rams finally scored a TD in overtime the offense had a chance to just drive in FG range to win and still failed.

After beating Seattle the first time all of the Rams wins have been pretty convincing margins while they lost all three of the close games they were in. I love this team and the talent but I am not sure they have what it takes to win it all and most of that comes down to lack of confidence in the defense and special teams.

So give me Stafford and the deficet.
Rams are in it to win it. Assuming health and good to excellent play in all 3 phases, I like their chances to win it all. But you got to play the games.

True but the point im making is that what you were doing defense before that has been working may no longer apply because the offense is going to attack you differently.
