Yes agreed!

There is a list of players that they have signed a month or so before free agency. There is only ONE since 2017 that they have signed many months prior to free agency.

The point is, the narrative that they sign guys that they want significantly before becoming a UFA is absolutely incorrect.

I was talking about players they drafted in the McVay era who had spent their entire rookie contracts with the Rams, but your list works to illustrate the point, too.

Every one of those players were elite: AD, Kupp, Gurley, Cooks (who they signed to an extension after trading for him).

Woods is the only non-elite player that they signed to an extension but that contract was a mistake since they abruptly traded him 18 months later.

The non-elite players like Dotson, Noteboom, Brian Allen, etc. they sign a month or two before they become a UFA. They do not sign them to long-term contacts in their RFA season.

Them maximizing the cheap years and waiting until they become an UFA hasn't meant that they don't like the guy.

Original comment you replied to was the sentiment that the Rams tend to keep the guys they like. Which is to say I suspect that if the Rams felt Jackson was their LT of the future they probably would have locked him up. They're not gonna fuck around with LT. LT is too important and they have an old QB with hard miles they need to protect.

So in trying to gauge what they're going to do here it is hard to read. If they want to keep Stafford and draft a LT it makes sense to tag him to ensure the rook has time to settle in without getting Stafford killed. If they expect to have Stafford two years or more it makes sense to sign him. If Stafford isn't the plan then it makes sense to move Stafford and Jackson to expedite the build and draft the LT. But the Rams can be hard to predict.

I figure they'll tag him or sign him, either way keep him around, and keep rolling with Stafford for now. So they can add weapons. But I'm not sure either way.

It's not a weird rabbit hole. That info was to challenge the assertion in the bold above.

Their pattern for non-elite players has NOT been to not fuck around. They fuck around plenty with the non-elite guys. They waited on Noteboom even though he may have been the LT of the future.

While I feel the tag is unlikely, I agree that they will keep AJ around one way or another. :clinkingbeer:

Oh you are definitely running down a fucking rabbit hole.

LT is not only crucial by its very nature, but if they "felt Jackson was their LT of the future" there is certainly room to think it's worth consideration in determining what they're planning to do.

So if you want to feel like maybe the Rams are high on Jackson and ready to lock him up big time knock yourself out. They may end up signing him. But my read on this is that they probably don't see him as their LT of the future.

And if you want to get your sperg on with that feel free, but I'll stop there and disagree.

I see you have a little allergic reaction to facts. Guess that's your right.

A rabbit hole would be if the facts are not relevant. But the fact of how the Rams have treated non-elite players, including the non-elite, potential-LT-of-the-future in Noteboom, is very fucking relevant.

I'm not saying that they're high on Jackson. I'm saying, that based on their historical pattern, them not signing a non-elite player significantly before free agency doesn't indicate that they're low on him or don't regard them as the OT of the future.

Is it possible that cap space has played a role in some of these decisions? Or the Rams or the player wanting to see what the market has to offer first?

Yes and yes...both are possible.

I don't think we'll ever know how the salary cap affects their decisions but I'm sure it does.

Most of the time when they don't sign a player well before free agency I think it's because the team doesn't want to overpay and would like to see what the market has to offer. I recall Snead saying many times that they would let the market determine value.

They didn't even have to wait they could have signed him to a multi year deal last year when he was a free agent. But since you're stuck on this pointless idea lets play

I got bored at that point. You're hung up on something that really isn't important. They had the chance last year to sign him to a long term deal. They haven't done it yet knowing he'll be a free agent after 4 more regular season games and whatever playoffs we might manage.
