That's assault and should be treated as such. If nothing is done, what is to stop something like this from happening again? A helmet to the spine could have left a serious injury on him. I don't care if the ref even made bad calls on purpose, still no grounds for assault.
 
Pretty indefensible (not to mention chicken shit) thru my eyes, gotta say I'm a little astonished that some here appear to be interjecting reasoning?

I agree with pretty much everyone else that's it completely inexcusable. I understand being angry with a ref for making a bad call or what have you, but there's a difference between sitting on anger and then attacking somebody over a game.

Attacking somebody over a game that for a vast majority of these people won't be anything more than a fond memory to look back on in 20 or so years shows a lack of compassion and regard for another human.
 
I may be in the minority here, but I have a strange feeling that this was sanctioned by their coach.

I've got that same feeling, which is really so effed it's beyond the pale. If that's the case I hope he does a little time in jail. Not years, but enough to make him realize what an idiot he was........
