Cam Newton: Ed Hochuli said he’s “not old enough” to get call

Other than his biceps, NFL referee Ed Hochuli may be best known for his lengthy, made-for-TV explanations of rulings.

But Sunday, he may have said too much without being on the mike.

Via Bill Voth of the Black and Blue Review, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said Hochuli told him he “wasn’t old enough” to get a roughing the passer call when hit out of bounds against the Saints, and Newton admitted being “ticked off.”

I was really baffled by what was said to me,” Newton said of Hochuli. “I was rolling out trying to string out the play and create some kind of opportunity to get a completion. The defensive lineman kind of hit me. It was close, right on the cusp, late hit, I don’t know.

“The response I got was: ‘Cam you’re not old enough to get that call.’ . . . I didn’t think you had to have seniority to get a personal foul.”

While there’s an unwritten code that older, more established quarterbacks tend to get an extra layer of protection, saying it is something else.

And saying it to a fifth-year quarterback who just got a $103.8 million contract seems both patronizing and unnecessary for an official of Hochuli’s experience.

He's probably joking. Most likely him and Cam had talked earlier and Newton complained that guys like Brady/Manning/Brees got calls he didn't. Poor time for a joke but I highly doubt he was serious.

If you watch the replay it doesn't much look like he is joking. If he is, thats one hell of a poker face

Possibly, but it's also possible he was serious in his sentiment while joking in the delivery. On a "borderline" late hit (as per Cam's words), older veteran QBs will usually get the benefit of the doubt while all the others are usually expected to just deal with it. I don't doubt that there's favoritism with these refs at all. Especially with the big name players.

And teams. And, possibly, the spread.

Clearly a joke, albeit an inappropriate joke and perhaps even a punishable offense.

Surprised Cam is the type of guy to not have a sense of humor, though. It could've also been the way Hochuli said it, some people don't get deadpan.

Source: Ed Hochuli denies telling Cam Newton he “wasn’t old enough”

If Ed Hochuli told Cam Newton he wasn’t old enough to get a call, it was an unnecessary and patronizing response to a quarterback who thought he took a late hit out of bounds.

But Hochuli says he didn’t say it.

According to a league source, Hochuli denied telling Newton he “wasn’t old enough” to get a call in today’s win over the Saints.

You can debate amongst yourselves who you believe in a game of “he said/he said” between the Panthers quarterback and the league’s most visible official.

But as for the league’s official response, they said the age of the quarterback would not come into play.

“The officials make decisions based upon the play on the field, and no other factors,” league spokesman Michael Signora said. “On the play in question, there is no roughing the passer because the quarterback is out of the pocket and a runner, and no unnecessary roughness because the contact is not late.”

Newton admitted the hit was borderline, but he has every right to ask for a clarification.

When the Broncos played the Chiefs last week Manning was hit after a throw, not late or dirty and there was no flag, but, one of the refs sprinted in the help Manning up....give me a break.
