And The Shape of Water is just a remake of Splash!
Oh jeez don't get me started on all the Hallmark movies with the same plot.

Guy and girl were friends in high school. Girl gets out of a bad relationship. Runs into guy she was friends with in high school. They date. Guy does something that causes first world (petty) girl problems. Girl breaks up with him. Guy does something emotionally amazing that none of us would do on Christmas. The End.

LotR was absolutely amazing. My all time favorite trilogy. I didn't like The Hobbit, though. Too long for what should've been a short story.
How are you going to make millions on a short story lol

I know you write. Since you loved LOTR have you read The Silmarillion? It was Tolkien’s first Middle Earth writing. His son finished it after his death. It’s a bit tough to read, different style of writing. I read it a few years ago. Hoping the Tolkien family will release the movie rights.

I have not read the Silmarillion (I have read all of the LotR books other than that.), but I know enough to know that Tolkien is pretty much the main authority on everything fantasy worldbuilding. Nobody else comes close.

Agree with most of these

Additional ones

Million Dollar Baby - first hour was good second hour bored me to tears - already did second hour with another movie done by Richard Dreyfuss

Mystic River - decent movie but hate Clint Eastwood Endings

And any movie that starts with I am dead in one year I always want to walk out of

Hello American Beauty. I think there were others that did that.
Don't blame Clint Eastwood for the ending. He didn't write it.

The Wheel of Time is considered the best fantasy series by a lot of people.

Tolkien is great but I liked Wheel of Time better (even though books 8 - 10 were extremely slow - 10 actually sucked)

And I can't wait for it to come out in November this year.

It may be the best fantasy series, (and I haven't read Wheel of Time yet) but nobody compares to Tolkien. He not only wrote the book on fantasy, but also story lore and overall worldbuilding. He literally created six languages for his works alone (he was a skilled linguist), and he wrote from a first-hand perspective of war (he had fought in WW1). Before he wrote fantasy, nobody else was doing it. He literally was the godfather of fantasy before anyone else did it, before it was as popular as it is today.

There is a good reason why I consider Tolkien an idol of mine (along with Poe and King) when it comes to writing. I mean no disrespect to the author of The Wheel of Time or even legends such as Terry Pratchett and George R.R. Martin; Tolkien was that good.

I will say he was the first to really put fantasy out there and as such set the stage for everyone who came after him.

However, I just want to say Jordan was even better as a world builder.

I enjoyed Tolkien but his writing style since he was writing for his 7 year old grandson put me off somewhat.

I can read Wheel of Time over and over again but Tolkien is only a one time read for me.

The movies on the other hand, I can watch over and over again since they were developed with older viewers in mind.

However, I will say that Jordan was also a huge fan of Tolkien and wrote his first book as a symbolic gesture of how he felt about Tolkien. So some people after watching the first season may think this is just a rehash of Tolkien.

The second book goes way off in a different direction and you will see that it is not a rehash of Tolkien by any means in the second season.

True about the movies: the LotR series is something I can watch forever.

Will agree to disagree about worldbuilding.

I just hope that I can be a tenth as good an authoress as Tolkien was; if I am, I'll be happy.

I also recommend reading the Wheel of Time but it is definitely a project.

15 books in all. And yes - you have to read all of them to get the entire story.

8 - 10 will feel like a job trying to read those 3 books.

I feel you have to read both series before you can make a statement like that.

If you read Wheel of Time and still feel that way then yeah we can agree to disagree but until then I will always have it in the back of my mind, she hasn't read Wheel of Time so how can she really know if Tolkien's worldbuilding is better than Jordans.

Very much true. I actually write a lot more than I read nowadays, so I can't guarantee I'll read the entire series. I'm already thirty; I have to get my own shit published.

There Will Be Blood. Terrible movie. Actually, anything with Daniel Day Lewis. Stop trying so fucking hard dude.

Braveheart is so inaccurate its actually offensive.

Also, lots of great movies suggested here - you guys are weird.

This is like arguing about football players from different eras, only you're arguing about QBs the 90's and the first QB to play when the forward pass was allowed. Some Einstein vs Hawking type stuff.

Steven Erikson is right up there with those two. @Tano of you haven't read The Malazan Book of the Fallen series, I highly recommend it. Book one was cool. Either 3 or 4 drags a bit, but every time a make it to the end of a tough part he gives a payoff that makes up for it 10 fold. Plus there's some genuinely hilarious parts in it, although the subject matter is very serious.

Tolkien I think built a lot more world in greater depth, but a lot of it wasn't necessary and combined with his writing style made a story that dragged a lot when it didn't need to. Jordan (Wheel of Time) built a really robust world, writes in a more modern style, and included only those parts that pushed the story along. Brandon Sanderson finished that series and is also a phenomenal world builder.

Back on topic, Moulin Rouge and Chicago both suck. To be fair, musicals aren't usually my style but I did really enjoy Hamilton so I think those might just be awful.

I am on Book 3 on the Malazan and I just can't get through it. He definitely has huge world building but I get so confused by some of his thoughts. It is almost like you need an engineering degree in fantasy mechanics to understand what the heck he is saying lol.

And I really should have a computer around to take notes on who the characters are.

Oh yeah. He doesn't explain shit. People just have conversations and do stuff and you have to piece it together as you go. It's definitely 3d chess compared to some other books.

Amazon Prime is currently filming a series based on the Silmarillion.

I've read my share of fantasy fiction. I could not get into 'The Wheel of Time'. So many of these fantasy books are the same. The price of power or the weak being able to wield great power only in moments of need, power cannot be controlled, etc...

The video game was some kickass shit though. I wasted a lot of time mastering it on line. I loved the way many Ter'angreal could counter others and if you learned to hot key, you could link the ones that compliment each other, like key down for electricity/let off for fireball. I eventually became a clan leader, but I ruined it when I was caught flirting with a fellow members girlfriend on a chat. Lol the whole clan hated me after that. I lived in PA and she lived in Kentucky. As if anything would have happened. I guess by then the game was running its course for me.

I do agree about Tolkien's writing. His books were hard to read.

I loved 'There Will be Blood'. It had so many intricacies. Daniel Plainview loathed Paul Sunday and Sunday hate Plainview, because they were one in the same. Both were persuasive talkers that made a living off of manipulating people and swindling them out of their money. Neither was what they professed to be. It was like an evil twisted dance.

I like Daniel Day-Louis films. He's a great actor and his sometimes over the top interpretations of period characters helps drive the point and wasn't as far off from reality as some may think. One of my alk time favorite movies of his though, is 'The Last of the Mohecans'
