I was thinking that assuming Stafford looks as good as ever this year, see if you can make another trade where you trade one of this year's one's for a 26' two and a 27' one just like they did in this draft. Keep kicking that extra one down the road until you need it for a QB, yet still getting a two to keep adding players.
I've long thought that NFL front offices should be much smarter with their picks, get the benefits of delayed gratification, and take advantage of other teams' inpatience. Especially safe front office personnel like Snead/McVay, Howie Roseman, etc.

If I were them every year I would do a trade down like you propose.

A 1st this year for a 2nd this year plus next year 1st.

Or the Fiske type trade: an early 2nd for a later 2nd plus a 2nd next year.

If teams did that, they could have extra draft capital every year.

Yeah, a couple months ago many people were citing Jordan Love as a good example of how to find continuity at QB.

But Jordan Love was drafted in 2020 and then remained a backup for THREE full seasons-- 2020, 2021, and 2022. Love didn't become a starter until 2023.

Frankly, drafting the next QB "too early" can be a waste of resources.
Agreed. And Love isn't all that.

Not a Cowherd hater, for the record. I think the dude is very perceptive. But McVay and Stafford are together this year with a bandaid that is still a favorable deal for the Rams. We're in for what should be a very deep playoff run. What happens after? Does Stafford say hey we need to do this now? And from there where does it end.

If the opportunity to take a very good to great qb prospect arises next year because of the talent and our draft resources, you take it. He can sit a year. If in two years Stafford at age 39 still wants to play, he can find another team. You don’t flippantly discard the opportunity to fill the most important position in sports for 15 years with greatness to hang on to the hope of a massive statistical outlier for 1-2 more years.

Matthew Stafford's head might tell him he could play another 3 years. But, his 37 year old (now) body that has already had multiple injuries could tell him to call it quits earlier.

It doesn't hurt to have his replacement already on the roster for a seamless transition.

It took some teams playing out the string years to find their next franchise QB. And some teams are still looking.

That's probably why they say not to pass up on the opportunity to nab a franchise QB because that opportunity doesn't come that often.
That’s the other side of it. You can’t just say, “we’re drafting our next franchise QB this draft” and choices magically appear.
Replacing Stafford will be no easy task. You just keep one eye open for somebody you think might be capable of handling the challenge and if you can, grab him.

There will be years when there really isn’t an option—like this year.

I think the plan is 2 more years of Stafford, with the asterisks being his health.

When out there… he’s still playing at a high level.

When the time comes, I don’t see the Rams rolling the dice at QB. Trading for a proven guy if there is a situation to exploit is probably their preference.

Cowherd is one of the only guys I can tolerate, really like his takes.

Comparing Stafford to Brady at this age is like comparing apples to oranges. Staff went through hell with those Lions teams while Brady had it pretty easy. Injuries take a toll on your body, whichis what unfortunately I think will determine how long Matt plays for. Put them in the same scenario their entire career, then yes, I think Matt plays into his 40's.

The worst time to look for a QB is when you need one.
If the Giants didnt jump in front of the Rams, they likely would have drafted Dart
Stafford is only under contract for 2 more ears, there is that too
The are in a great spot, if a QB is available
I like Cowherd but he does really play both sides. History is not on the side of guys playing high level ball after 37
The Rams are playing with house money but have to keep an eye out ofr the future

Exactly. And that includes FA and trades as well.
Smart teams think ahead.

Stafford is indeed still playing at a high level, Lord knows why but he is. Watched Tutu highlights yesterday, and those spirals... tight & coming in like a heat seeking missile. No telling how long he plays, only he & the Rams know. Don't wait around too long for the Rams to say anything about how long Matt plays or what his health is really like. They told us nothing about TGII. Zero. Zilch. Nada. So don't expect them to say literally anything about Matt's playing condition, lol.

It all depends on the quality of the draft. They aren’t always the same. It also depends on the state of the team. Teams with few needs can afford to trade away current picks for future picks. Most non playoff teams need as many picks as they can get.

I should have clarified, On a previous show Cowherd had suggested that the Rams would have taken Dart, I'll try and find the clip. I think it was in one of his "why Shadeur fell" commentaries.
He has said that before but then a lot of media has.

This can’t be under stated.

Green Bay went from
Favre to Rogers to Love, without missing a day.
That’s over 25 years of football without having the setbacks of trying to find a QB.

Other teams can do this as well.
They just choose not to.
