I think he wanted to change his mind, but the organization didn't want to lose the their OC to another team. He couldn't change his mind for the Rams and then the Chiefs gave him that opportunity. with Trent Green. I love the guy, but hate the upper management for pushing him out.
That's the way I remember it.

They didn't want to lose Martz, because they certainly would have.

They didn't want to lose Martz, because they certainly would have.

ST. LOUIS, Jan. 17 – The St. Louis Rams' first home playoff victory in the city's pro football history had an immediate impact on the future of offensive coordinator Mike Martz. The Rams announced today that Martz, who was expected to be pursued as a head coach by other NFL teams, would become the team's head coach whenever Dick Vermeil decides to step down.

Vermeil himself initiated the move, in which Martz will sign a two-year contract extension to remain as the team's offensive coordinator. Vermeil, 63, said he intends to quit coaching when his contract runs out in two years. Other sources in the organization said Vermeil could retire sooner if the Rams win the Super Bowl this year or next.

"We promised to offer Mike the head coaching job, if it's available," team president John Shaw said today. He added that the prospect of losing Martz, 48, the architect of the league's No. 1 offense, to another team seeking a head coach "was a serious factor in what's taken place here. No one in this organization wants to lose Mike Martz."

But Shaw also said: "As far as I'm concerned, Dick can coach as long as he wants."

Martz's extension will prevent owners such as Jerry Jones in Dallas and Robert Kraft in New England from speaking with Martz about coaching vacancies. Green Bay, New Orleans and the New York Jets also have openings.

"I'm excited about the opportunity," said Martz, the Redskins' quarterback coach in 1997-98 before taking the Rams job last season. "It's from Dick's intervention that this opportunity could work out for me. I'd just like to say this is where I want to be. I don't want to be the head coach anywhere else but St. Louis."

Back then, if they lost Martz they lost the “main reason” for their transformation into Champions. The offense.

But, yeah… sucks to have lost Vermeil… if he truly wasn’t ready to retire.
That is freaking not true at all.In fact it was probably more of the opposite.

CGI in all respects we can get into this totally. You can’t have it one way & then the other.

You had it right the first time. Can you think of anyone with more class?

I’ll also answer this with what Mcvay brings to the table is special. He brings class & holds his players accountable. He losses all pro coaches & players each season.

I’ve followed sports & teams a lot.I’m more for the rebuild & each season as a Whole.I’ve seen all my teams win it all over my lifetime. It’s a special thing.

I’m an Angels Fan,but HATE Mike Trout.Weather it is his fault or not there lossers. I believe especially now that I could go in there and GM(involved with process)that team better than any from the past.

Mike Scioscia won it because of his coaching staff. He got FAT & Lazy.

Mad Mike was the best thing ever for
the NINERS. A loser.

Kurt Warner should have always been a Ram.I look back at everyone’s All-American & went to the movies the week before the SuperBowl.

That story was a bundle of Kurt Warners hurt & why he isn’t a Ram.
To think Issac Bruce was a Niner.

My memory was always Dick Vermeil with a UCLA Bruins sweeter on the sidelines.

As a USC fan I always thought of DV as Class Act & a teacher of the game.
I’m a free thinker & a Pete Carol fan.
George Allen as well.

As a college football fan that is my heart. The NCAA is dirty. An example
of it is in that era. My wish will always be that George Allen lived & coached just 2 more years. -CSULB Forevr.

I’m not a smart guy,but I know enough to know when I’m witnessing something special.

So many people kept misstating this and thankyou for finding the article. The Rams did not force Dick Vermeil out because they wanted to keep Martz. They had Martz locked up, Vermeil made a gut decision too fast. Felt he accomplished what he wanted and felt the timing was perfect to walk away from the game.

Problem is, he realized he made a mistake and it was not right away, it took awhile. Carl Peterson who worked with Vermeil previously offered him the Chief job and Vermeil took it to work with his good friend plus realized he walked away too soon. The front office did nothing wrong with Vermeil everybody makes that perception, which is incorrect. Vermeil left on his terms, then realized once training camp and the season started he made a mistake and had in opportunity to get back in a year later. That's all.

Anyway - as a long time Rams Fan that 1999 season(summer of) means a lot to me.I lost my Grandmother.

That will always have an effect on my LIFE & who I am today. It probably turned me for the worst. I have The Rams in my veins.

I’m flying back East to see my Aunt, but that summer day after church will always hurt me in my decision to leave & not fly back & take care of her.

It wasn’t my fault & I could have flown to Ireland as well for a BigTime wedding. My mother had just died less than a year before that. I had everything.

Of course my Father had his AZZ up his butt.Too face Azz. I say that in the kindest why, because I could have NEVER EVER asked for a better Father. He was actually an Angle through & through & lived an honest life(there are a couple questions I’d like to ask because I would have got the answers, but never my business) he always had my best interest in mind.My sister & how his wife(the devil) hurt my nephews.

Why I’m posting this is because we all go through certain times that aren’t always easy.I post here because it is an outlet to get away from reality, but know reality is there.

Like I said I’m a RAMS FAN First. On Sunday’s it’s not church first if church at all. My Faith is getting stronger to know I have a purpose in time.

The journey of Life for me was going to Vegas & making 2 bets. Rams - 2 1/2 home (The Lou) vs Baltimore.

Then it was to go shop for a futures bet. BTW - Trent Greene was The Rams QB. Kurt Warner was a solid backup.
London Fletcher had just started his first game & Warner got his first NFL experience to end yet The 19 ? Straight loss to the Niners.

Anyway found it at 150-1 odds after shopping.Heard after Trent went down it went to 300-1. I stayed with my opening game day play.

Wow- flash back, but need to go visit my grandmother’s site.I couldn’t go back & would have not been able to control myself with my cousin who said he had it.

Anyways I went on a flight to Oakland as my sister & dad were going to the funeral.IMO if my grandma mother was still alive I would have been flying to NY to live & start a new life out of California. Instead I’m where I am today.

I saw the Trent Greene hit after going 8-8 against the Chargers.I still & always believe The Rams always had that destiny. Yes I give Kurt Warner all of that, but come on Now.

Any Ram Fan that thinks Trent Greene & Dick Vermeil wouldn’t have been great together had to have seen KC & that Offense? Best offense in football

See - my memory is not that bad

Mean while had a Old Friend I worked with who was a Niners Fan & had always questioned why I was still a Rams Fan after all these years. He would give me crap all the time. Loss after loss & not just to the Niners.I’d have to watch the Niners win again.
Last time I saw him 2001 after 9/11 & was being fired for being over the drinking limit.
Just saying about3 months ago he jumped of the GG Bridge & killed himself. Sad,but my Life (journey has just went through another cycle.

—Wishing everyone a wonderful Life in your Journey. Being a Old Hippie type these next 3 weeks will be awesome. Trading camp should be Fun. The life of a butterfly & know you can be beautiful inside & out

To compare the 2 is night & day.

Mad Mike got 2 first round picks for DV & Trent Greene.

I will not say Martz was not a good coach, but I will say he did not take care of Kurt Warner as a Franchise QB.

The movie shows that there was bad vibes from the start between them.
That was the biggest take I got from America Underdog.

That 1999 team was special from top to bottom. Mad Mike was apart of it,but wasn’t the reason The Rams won. That defense was tough as well.

I don't totally agree as Martz was a major part, but what doomed Mike Martz was a combination of a couple of things.

  1. Martz was not the executive that Vermeil was when it came to the draft & personnel. Vermeil leaned on others more like Armey for example, but Martz felt he was given bad advice on Troy Polamalu for example, everybody thought that was too high for a Safety so they went with Jimmy Kennedy instead, Martz just didn't have the ability to keep everyone on the same page and would have been better suited to be just the Head Coach with a strong GM in place.
  2. Larry Marmie....Martz tried to get Larry after he fired Peter Giunta as DC after the 2000 season. Martz blew that initially not keeping the Co-Defensive Coordinators in place that Vermeil had set up with Giunta for the scheme & John Bunting to coach the players up. Martz replaced Bunting with Mike Haluchak and Giunta struggled inspiring the guys, which Bunting did. Anyways Martz wanted Marmie, but was blocked by the Cardinals at that time, thank goodness and then hired Lovie Smith, which was a great hire. However, when Lovie left to become Head Coach of Chicago, Martz then went back to Marmie, who was now available, even though the organization wanted Dick Jauron. That began the rift between Martz & Jay Zygmunt and Marmie was an epic fail and for the life of me I don't know why Martz is still to this day so loyal to Marmie.
  3. Martz was just too stubborn in his ways and alienated everyone. Anyone that Vermeil comes across loves him, Martz was the opposite. Granted Vermeil does not succeed without Martz's scheme, but as we see with Sean McVay, it takes more than scheme. McVay for example did not hire Joe Barry as DC, who was a close friend, now Barry has actually done a good job in Green Bay, but previous to that he failed in Detroit & Washington. McVay continues to do an excellent job of recognizing coaching talent, Martz in that area was not good IMHO, which led to his demise.

Well, it depends on who you want to believe while understanding that, yes, he did say he wanted to retire. But he also said that he regretted his hastiness in declaring his retirement so fast after a Super Bowl win. Like almost the next day after he did it. There was pressure to keep Martz, so it depends on what narrative you want to believe. I’ll believe Vermeil over that shit show of upper management and owner, any time of the week., and twice on Sunday.

Yeah, with all the hype during the season and pressure to make Martz the “heir apparent”, Vermeil felt pushed out, effectively, and said he was adamant he was retiring so as to attempt a graceful exit.

That FO was always a shit show and they managed to dismantle a potential dynasty in less than 3 years… even Godzilla would be like “damn, that’s a lot of destruction”.

I will always love Martz.

He signed this for me when he was still our HC.

My aunt worked for TWA for 50 yrs as a flight attendant. Mike was in 1st class on one of her flights... poor bastard. She told him about my addiction to the Rams... the whole history of it too. I'm SURE it was the last thing he wanted to hear about, especially since my aunt probably didn't leave out a single detail and she's a talker. Like I said... poor bastard.

Anyway, long after my aunt had finished boring Mike to death I'm sure and the plane was about to land, she told me that he called her over and asked her for something that he could sign for me. She didn't ask him to do this... he did it on his own and like I said, it was long after my aunt forced him to hear about my lifelong Fandom. All she could find at that moment was the passenger list (which she told me nobody is supposed to have outside of the flight crew)... so she handed him the list and this is what he wrote for me...

He didn't have to do this... but it gave me a little peek into what kind of man he is. It's one of the reasons I'll always be in his corner.

So,,, I'll be more than willing to get into a 3 point stance and square off with any of you if you don't show my man some love. Come see me at our game in Tampon. :fistbump:

Nice find.
