Clarification on the punt return penalty

I re-watched the end of the game, and I figured out what the refs did. We never saw anything on the screen, but the broadcasters were completely lost about what happened on the play. They never actually showed there real penalty by #51 McFadden. Ronde Barber thought that the hold was called on the downfield missed block. Instead, closer review of the tape shows that the holding penalty was already thrown before Tavon even caught the ball. It was around the 40-yard line; so, the holding penalty was called around the line of scrimmage, not on the return. This means that the telecast never showed the alleged penalty.

For all those calling foul for the refs, you should at least revise your opinions (a little) with this epiphany.

For what it's worth, I feel bad for Tavon. He's misused in the offense by Schottenheimer, and his magic on special teams is wasted by his teammates.

thanks for that clarification because i went nuts when i saw it. can you clarify something else? i'm still trying to work out why schotty put up a big sign saying "we're gonna pass it" on that last interception.

If that's true we got a generous spot, right? How egregious was the "real" penalty? I don't have NFL rewind or anything. I don't see why it's so hard for guys to play special teams... It makes me wonder whether the go live in practice when they do special teams....

They never showed it. I could only see a flag on the ground as Tavon is about to field the punt.

And after rewatching it I still think they blew the call - I don't see anyone near #51 as he's running down the field before tavon catches the ball.

Did you actually see the penalty? Did McFadden hold somebody during the punt? Seems like the crew yesterday had no clue of many things, just like the neutral zone infraction on the block kick a penalty that has never been called against the team kicking the field goal in the history of the game!

they showed it on ESPN today and the "hold" by #51 was more of a shove than anything... should have never been called

There was absolutely no fucking holding at anytime by #51 from start to finish on that play.

Actually, he got beat on an inside move by #53 of the Chargers. McFadden then tried to hook him from behind. The camera switches to another angle before you can see if the hook actually turned the defender. At the very least, he was badly out of position to execute a legal block.

I don't think this is right. I think the penalty was on 31, not 51, and it happened on the Chargers side of the field. Otherwise why would they put it on the Chargers 40? Also, if the "hold" happened before the play the ball would have been put where Austin caught it.
