Same as it ever was! There’s no transformation of the QB position happening. You can say we have a trend right now but that’s a moving target reliant on the type of talent coming into the league. It’s hard to find an example of a QB more illusive than Fran Tarkenton (1961-1978) was for years. And he was able to play that long because of that AND he looked to throw the ball first, run out of necessity. Steve Young and Warren Moon come to mind as well. QBs that tend to run first have a short life span in the NFL. It’s just one of those traits that doesn‘t translate well from the college game just like the RB that used to make his living with speed to the edge in college. It just won’t work in the big league.
I listened to one of the ESPN guys yesterday on the radio that does NFL Today can't remember his name. He expects Belichek to call running plays for Cam. Basically said it wouldn't make sense to hold back on his strength as a runner. He thinks that BB would not have signed him if he wasn't going to let him run. It makes sense as that's a big part of his game. However, the rub with aging running NFL quarterback is they will get hurt and wear down eventually. Since the NE only has him signed for one year I guess they have nothing to lose. They still have Stidham who they like.

The funniest part of these conversations is that the QB position originally was a running threat only. He'd be the guy you could trust to dish the ball with laterals by reading the defense like you see with modern option plays. There was in fact a point when the NFL approved the forward pass and the league trended towards pocket QBs because they survived longer. So basically if the league is trending to running QBs it's actually going back to its roots not trending to the future.
Even in this modern era it's still going to be true that pocket QBs live longer. The rules are even better for QBs who remain in the pocket. And if you look at the running type QBs there have been guys who manage longer careers but the percentage of guys who do that is much lower than it is with the pocket types.
Going back to Mahomes what makes him special is he uses his athleticism to buy time while he looks down field and he's got a cannon with the accuracy too. This is why he reminds me of Elway. Elway could have been a heavy-run QB if he wanted to be, the guy was an exceptional athlete. But he, like Mahomes, did it carefully and mainly used his ability to buy time to put a dagger into defenses with deep passes.
It's a good thing to have athleticism and ability to scramble and make plays with your feet at QB and it always has been. But for every guy like Fran Tarkenton or Steve Young there's been a ton of guys who see their careers get cut short. IMO the most important element for a QB to have long term success in this league is speed of processing and accurate throws. If you have that you can forge a nice career and win a ton of games.
And lastly irt Super Bowl wins that is something I think is unfair in terms of comparing QBs because you need a team around you to do that. Some guys get the raw deal basically, falling into situations that suck with poor line play and/or low talent level around them, coaching turnover, etc. It is what it is though, the guys who win the Super Bowls get all the accolades but just pointing out there's a ton more to that than just the QB.
But if they don't have a ceiling... The sky's the limit! Their greatness will be uninhibited because of their lack of a ceilings!

Mahomes although a tad more of an ad-libber, and right-handed... reminds me most of Steve Young in a lot of ways.

Pretty much sums it up. Statue QB’s are still pretty dominant in winning SB’s and staying in the league longer.
I understand you have a young dual threat QB and this is your position because it’s your franchises stake in success for the future.
Still not sold on the midget, especially the durability part but I will say this, love watching me some running QB’s which is the reason I wanted Wentz over Goff back in the the day.
League is changing But any type of change is minimal as far as long term success of mobile QB’s.
I had this same stance when Carson was still the QB. Nothing changed with Kyler.
