Agreed, after watching players constantly run her over, knock her down, and literally try to claw her eye out and minimal to no repercussions along with excuses and defending of the assaulters has really been appalling. I guess it's jealousy? I don't know what else it'd be.

I get it, she comes in already a millionaire when most of the WNBA players never get close to that kind of money I could see them wanting to try and knock her down a peg competitively speaking. But how they don't see what she could do for their sport and their own earnings over the next decade is amazing to me. Don't need to kiss her ass... don't need to give her a free pass... try and beat her on the court... but trying to tear her down both physically and in the media is just fucking weird. If anything they should use her to their advantage.

If I was a free agent star going into this offseason I'd be trying to go to the Fever. Try and make myself the Jordan/Pippen of the WNBA and ride those coattails and see what kind of sponsorship money I could get.

It's mind boggling.

I have watched a number of her games including last night's playoff loss. It's not just the hard fouls... I actually am fine with that kind of play... especially with a rookie trying to find her way into the league. The problem is that the zebras act like they don't even see a foul at all when the level of the foul is beyond regular level... they are clearly flagrant fouls. Those simply cannot be missed I'm sorry. Maybe 1 ref could be blocked from seeing, but not all of the refs.

There was a flagrant foul layed on her last night directly in front of the ref while Clark was attempting a shot close to the basket. Even the terrible booth announcers were shocked that not only was NO foul even called... it was clearly flagrant. Clark got up off the floor and didn't say anything to the ref. She stared the ref down for a minute, but didn't say shit. She's a tough player and I cannot believe the league is completely doing her dirty at that level.

It is beyond bizarre and completely unacceptable.

She's going to be unstoppable after having an actual off season, so she can refresh, refocus and be stronger at the start of next season. I for one am totally here for it

I don't understand the animosity towards Clark. She's going to be the golden goose. Not many cared about the WNBA. They'd never make it if it wasn't for the NBA.

Now there's a lot more interest because of Caitlin Clark. I imagine their players union will want to opt out of their current contract now. They can opt out in November ending it next year in October. Attendance and TV ratings are higher. Thanks to Clark. Salaries will be higher. Thanks to Clark. They can negotiate a better contract for the players. Thanks to Clark.

Truth!

But the WNBA treats her like she is the basketball Antonio Brown instead of the record crushing rookie cash cow that she is. 100% incompetence by that league and it's decision makers.

The only reason I can think of is jealousy. Its a woman thing. Women can be very jealous. Even in this situation where she's gonna be the reason salaries increase. You don't see men acting like that. Bird and Magic were a big thing. The reason the NBA became so popular back in the 80's. I don't recall the players being jealous over the attention they got. They were thankful because it meant more money in their pockets.

Heard a rumor yesterday that Clark might consider going to Europe this next year?

Fever appear to be serious about winning more playoff games with the firing of coach Christie Sides and rumors about hiring Stephanie White the ex-Connecticut HC. Would love to see Caitlin and the Fever be one of the top teams next year with a better coach and a few more key players. Adding FA Sabally from the Wings would be nice.

And men can’t?
Sorry, Londoner. I totally agree with Snackdaddy here and I’m one of the leftiest of lefties on this board. In men’s leagues, the top salaries are celebrated going back to Magic and Bird in the 80s because a rising tide lifts all boats.

In every women’s league, in the US at least, it’s the same shit over and over and over again. It starts out with cries of Sisterhood! Women Unite! And quickly devolves into crabs in a barrel. It’s sad. What’s worse is that it’s predictable at this point.

And it sucks because men really started to support the WNBA this year. If you told me 20 years ago that men would proudly wear a jersey of a female player, I’d have been highly dubious, nigh on incredulous. But we saw it. Men in record numbers stepping up for a women’s sport even as so many women weren’t.

Caitlin Clark had a top 4 jersey IN ALL OF US SPORTS!!!

I hope Clark goes and plays in Europe for a year. We saw by the precipitous drop in the numbers what happened without her. And it wasn’t because she lost, but because the whole point to a contest, to even play the game, is that everyone is suppose me to be subject to the same rules with the same enforcement.

The refereeing specifically against Clark was so egregious that it may have ultimately doomed the league.

So yeah, men can be jealous and petty and every other vice. But this wasn’t an indictment of an entire gender, but rather how US women specifically that have reached the top of their athletic field conduct themselves. There’s a consistent pattern that Clark looked to be on the vanguard of dispelling and there was tremendous excitement for that… but the crabs in the barrel win this round.

And it’s fucking disappointing and sad and frustrating. Cuz it keeps happening and it never gets fixed because every attempt to bring accountability gets shouted down with “BUT MEN!”

Just no

The activist women don't seem to realize that equal pay for a league is driven by economics. And even when they do acknowledge that basic truth, they move on to blaming men for not being interested in their sport. Doesn't matter that the issue is so many women don't give a fuck about sports. Oh no. It's the misogynistic men who are the root of this evil.

I have always watched women's tennis over their male counterparts. This is because I enjoy the short skirts and finely toned asses some of them offer the spectator. However when the matches are thuggish or mannish looking women, or men pretending to be women, I don't waste my time watching.

Now an activist will make a mountain out of that. And the women get pissed off when the fine young players with the sweetly toned asses that appeal to heterosexual males end up center court when a better player who is less easy on the eyes ends up relegated to smaller crowds. But even this goes back to the fact that women are not the demographic who feed sports income. It is men. And that doesn't mean there is something wrong with us. In fact it is a basic truth they can cry and whine about all they want, but it isn't going to change no matter how much they try to influence society through social media and news and commercials.

Ok, while you’re completely entitled to your opinion, this post misses the mark and throws in some troubling takes.

Every female league doesn’t have to be a lingerie league for it to be legit or worthy of male attention

Edit: on the specific point, I watched Clark because she’s an exceptional basketball player, not because she looked any type of way.

Of course not. They just do for myself and many other men to watch them. And the point is that if women watched sports like men they would have the viewership and fan numbers to make equal pay make sense.

Honestly, as a girl who is mostly attracted to girls? Caitlin Clark honestly doesn't move the meter for me, looks-wise. I watch her because she's good at basketball, not because she's attractive (because honestly, to me, she isn't).

The point is that fuckability wasnt why so many men tuned in to the WNBA this year, it was Clark and the recognition of other talented women basketball players. If anything, Clark helped men see past that “lingerie league” mentality.

It was only when the league treated her like shit both on and off the court in such an egregious manner where it was obvious that their actions were ruled by petty jealousies and immaturity that men stopped watching.

The WNBA didn’t suddenly become fuckable the minute Clark entered the league any more than it became unfuckable now.

How you chose to watch women’s sports does not remotely describe the Clark experience… at all.

Your other point stands. Women by and large haven’t supported women’s sports which is yet another reason this whole thing is so tragic. Women have been complaining since the 70s that men don’t take women’s sports seriously. They finally do in a real way, including selling out games and buying jerseys and they fuck it up in the most spectacular way possible.

That’s the issue. The rest is personal preference and has no bearing on the topic.

Thanks for the detailed response, mate, but I was simply making the basic point that men are just as capable as women of being jealous.

Again women have no fucking right to say that men should watch women's sports. This is a basic flaw in the current age social dynamic. And this is applicable to this conversation. You cannot say "oh well men finally care about women's sports due to how good Caitlin Clark is" and completely ignore the bigger issue that is that women don't fucking care about sports in general. Or that mild mannered modern males feel this white knight idiocy to cater to the female gender as well as the collection of special "shards" it has grown of late.

It matters. One directly relates to the other.

As to Caitlin's "fuckability" (your word) I am willing to bet that if you built the WNBA as an underwear league with fine ass models instead of oversized mouthbreathing athletes, it would get more male viewership. Also I do think I'd request permission to climb aboard Caitlin, which is to say I wouldn't kick her out of bed. But I agree it's a far cry to watch any of the long list of fine ass young tennis players compared to any of these women in the WNBA.

Bottom line is I think the WNBA is racist as fuck. But the mild mannered mainstream and their media sycophants are too afraid of making waves to call it what it is. Racism is racism though. You can't break down the barriers on what whites have done for so long then turn around and pull the same shit. Well, actually you can, and they are, but this will end up being called what it is once the cowards in the media finally wake up to what is going on. Then all these mild mannered mainstream lemmings on social media will take up the call as they realize they had it wrong. And on and on social norms will turn.
