Now if we gave him that contract last season, we would be calling for Snead's head on a pike

Not everyone thought of him as a whipping boy. I actually liked his being drafted. Kromer didn't like him which shows how poor his talent evaluation is in light of his love for Blythe.

Center is the most difficult OL position to play and takes a few years to actually develop for most players. The NFL is a big leap.

I was the worse one.
You are an honest man. I think it was a Greek philosopher Diogenes who went looking for an honest man and couldn't find one.

I have to admit that I made fun of Allen occasionally but in jest. Imo it was always clear that his biggest problems were injuries and covid. You can't show your stuff when you're missing camp and on IR. It's great to see him step up and he earned the contract.

Imo one of the biggest improvements in the Rams this year was Allen ending the constant pressure on the qb with Blythe. As AD constantly proves, no qb can really excel or function well in the face of immediate pressure up the middle.

Like it. I am surprised though. IOL just don't get paid under Snead, historically.

I couldn't see the Rams with a big offensive line makeover. I thought Corbett would be the odd man out. Now, they need to work on the run block scheme and decide on the RG to take over for Corbett. Solid smart moves by the Rams so far.

Re-signing Allen & having Shelton means we don't have to hunt for a back-up Center later in the draft. Shelton can also compete at or back-up LG.
And let's not forget that good ole "continuity". Guys are talented.....we won the SB. Many think of Noteboom as a 2 game replacedment for Whit but he also started the 7 games he missed in 2019. The guy had a rough time at G but everybody knew he was a T. Allen had what was described as a bad injury. 2022 will be his 2nd year back from that. Could he be better? Looks like McSnead plan has worked since 2017.

My bad entirely on Allen. I thought he was a liability, and I am so fucking glad to eat my Kentucky fried crow. Mmm...crow...

I love this contract. Very cheap, and he's only twenty-six.

Well, I'm one who always remember when I was right so you also have to remember when you were wrong. Did not like when the Rams picked Brian Allen, I wanted someone bigger in the middle, Kromer liked Allen because of his wrestling background leverage & quick hands, but I disagreed.

When he started in 2019 (2nd year with the team), he was not strong at the point of attack and his snaps were inconsistent. I felt when the year started, Allen would be cut, however, Allen took the year of 2020 to work on his strength and looked like a total different person during minicamps & at training camp. Our own @bubbaramfan & @VeteranRamFan pointed this out continuously during their camp reports, plus @bubbaramfan communicated the Rams were better with Allen at Center & Corbett at RG with Bobby Evans on the bench and he was right.

Allen played his ass off this year and his line calls with Stafford were spot on. Glad he's back proving, you can always take a sad song and make it better. Now Bobby Evans is my new pin up doll for disappointment. He played at Oklahoma for two Heisman Trophy Winning QB's both at RT & LT, however, can't pass block to save his life with the Rams. I doubt Evans does a mea culpa like Allen to capture the RG position available now with Corbett's departure as the the Rams look internally first, but regardless, Allen proved me wrong and I feel great that he did and would like others to do the same.

2019 is why I hope that they find someone more imposing than Shelton to lineup next to Allen. I don't think he's better than Blythe, for example... and I think that helped expose some of Allen's limitations. Need a bigger, stronger guy next to Allen than Shelton, imo.

As for the Allen contract? Good value for what I've read.. stability is good and he performs well and knows the system inside and out.

I would place Bobby Evans trending towards where OL Jamil Demby is today a former Ram OL who was not offered a contract & is currently looking for work Demby was an RFA. This 2021 preseason snaps below is an example of what BE played like @ RG....ugly:thumbsdown:

View: https://twitter.com/i/status/1431810992439058432

Hard to understand just what transpired over the last 3 seasons to the Rams former 3rd rd 2019 selection Bobby Evans after his excellent rookie season. Evans sure appeared like the real deal. Below is a good article on BE's rookie season grade:

https://ramstalk.net/2019-rookie-grades-los-angeles-rams-rookies-filled-in-gaps-nicely/#

BOBBY EVANS (RT) – GRADE B+
Evans stepped into the right tackle role nicely as a replacement for the injured Rob Havenstein. He played for most of the latter half of the season and was one of two rookies to start on the offensive line. Evans had a good year despite not expecting to play much behind Havenstein.

Evans performed better than expected in his new role. He played 100 percent of all snaps in six out of the last seven games of 2019. He also cross-trained with the Rams in different offensive line positions. He had already played both guard and tackle in college at the University of Oklahoma.

Evans may continue to play behind Havenstein if he comes back healthy, but he will be an excellent backup. He also performed well against tough defensive edge rushers like the Chicago Bears’ Khalil Mack. Evans did get help from tight ends, but held his own on the line when needed. He also had no penalties against him during the season.

BE's had an accomplished 4 yr college resume where he started 40 Oklahoma games @ LT & RT in 3 seasons!

BE Oklahoma's career:
2016 academic All-Big 12 First-Team honoree
2016 honorable mention All-Big 12 pick by league's coaches
2017 Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honoree
2017 honorable mention All-Big 12 selection by league's coaches
2018 part of an offensive line unit that won the Joe Moore Award
2018 named a second-team All-Big 12 selection by league's coaches and media
Started 40 Oklahoma games @ LT & RT in 3 seasons!

From all photos of BE In the 2021 training camp & what we saw in all the preseason games he started BE looked seriously flabby & floppy in all the wrong places on his good size physical frame. BE was primarily working @ OG for the new OL coach Carberry.

From my observations during the preseason the only snaps that BE made a decent block were when he got his few opportunities to play RT, but not much better.

PFF grade of BE's first preseason grade was way off the mark IMO when they graded him a 78.3...:woozy2:..that was a pathetic piece of work rating by PFF.

It was obvious that Carberry wanted 2nd season OT Tremayne Anchrum as his #2 reserve OT behind top reserve OT Noteboom however Anchrum got injured & was never seen again in 2021 & then there were a few surprises UDFA rookie OT named Alaric Jackson & the ever-improving Interior OL'er Coleman Shelton. Not a good indication for BE IMO.

Presently Snead has continued to load up with OT's besides Anchrum, Jackson, Brewer & Evans he has Max Pircher & another Oklahoma RT named Adrian Ealy. Carberry's OT cadre is flowing over but what he lacks are OG's. BE is now Carberry's most experienced OL'er involving starts which are 8 with 27 gms active in uni. Coleman Shelton has 47 NFL games under his belt & 4 NFL seasons with only 2 stars.

If BE had played better in 2021 there is a very good chance that Shelton would have not been signed a new 2 yr contract. If one of those OTs can get up to speed @ OG in this offseason like Anchrum, Brewer, or Jackson then you might see Carberry keep Shelton in that difficult to find & a very valuable 6th OL'er again, start one of those young OT's @ RG & finally see BE traded to another team looking for an experienced RT but not for much in return.

Great post! I liked Allen because of his wrestling background which requires strength and leverage and because I thought he was tough. (I also really liked Noteboom's background as a hockey player for balance and leg strength.) But he only had a half dozen or so games as a starter before basically missing more than a year and a half due to a bad knee injury and a bad, untimely covid attack which knocked him out of preseason training the second year he was out.

Allen worked through it all, never lost his confidence, and proved all of us who questioned him wrong. Great story of determination.

I don't think he really paid either of them Mojo. $7M has to be on the lower end of the center pay spectrum, especially nowadays with so many teams looking for centers who can help their shitty QBs with line calls. I think in a way it shows the market speaking and the Rams fit them in.

If either of those guys had gotten any sort of good money offer they'd be gone IMO. Like with Corbs who I am sure they wanted to keep too.

I also think if any of them don't live up to things the Rams will be able to get out from under them rather easily. Of the three Boom's the riskiest one and he's also really low for a starting LT at around $13M when the top guys get roughly $10M more per. Seems to me that the league wasn't really impressed by the Rams' pending FAs this time around.

Does this board ever NOT like a signing by the Rams?

I am meh about Allen. I guess the better question who is better that was available?

This poster is just :startstruck:with what the Rams have done with the new FA contracts for 3 of our four involved OL'ers (starting LT Noteboom, center Allen & our 2021 season versatile 6th OL'er Shelton).

I would have bet big that Snead would not have pulled this off...but as usual, I should never underestimate Les Snead...NEVER!

Wait you're seriously asking if people always agree with this front office? Take a vacation last year around the time we traded for Stafford?

Well Jamal Demoff is still sort of a Ram? He was drafted as well behind both players.

I didn’t like the Brian Allen pick & thought The Rams should have drafted another OKLAHOMA guy at center in Humphries. The Italian though could be an amazing player in a few years?

Still a Bobby Evans fan. The 2018 class has turned out well then ?

Guess i need to be more specific with my words. "Paid" meaning...Re-sign, re-up, 2nd contract. It's rare for IOL under Snead/McV.

Like you said though, these contracts aren't breaking the bank.

Momento, as someone who has eaten a lot of crow, just marinate it overnight then roast it basting with garlic lemon butter. Don't over do it because it gets chewy and tough. Eating crow isn't bad, if you prep it right. The price of keeping a much younger GF happy.
