He didn't earn all those trophies and accolades from high school til the day he left college because of the people around him. He was a damn good player, the emphasis is simply on WAS. He took too many injuries to areas essential to a OL. His back and foot, taking away power and movement. For a center, power and lateral movement is crucial and he lost a lot I think.
The pre-injury Jones could have made a mark on this team, but he just simply isn't the same player anymore.
I still have to go back to my old refrain. Any Ram O-line player who was on out team last year that couldn't beat out Wells or Joseph should not only not be on our team, they shouldn't be in the NFL.
It is really quite simple men. I'm gonna say being the victim of bad back surgeries and almost a pro body builder when I had the first one. Was nothing like what Dr. promised and he cut me 21+ inches and said he found more than he went looking for. I had been lifting Super really heavy. Just like Jones' back surgery even 3 decades later (ITS A BITCH) especially if you want or HAVE TO lift very heavy again daily for your proffession.
Everyone has different pain tolerance levels to add to that. Its chemical sometimes. I'm not ruling out his foot injury that I've never experienced. I just know that same injury was the main reason Trung Canidate failed as a pro besides Martz.(LOL) . Back injuries and OL NEVER MIX. You have to rebuild your core. All the muscles sliced through have to heal and then dealing with scar tissue like Brian Quick has been dealing with. You have to constantly tear and stretch it as a human torture routine. Fisher commented on the screams immanating from the trainers room all during Quicks rehab and what he's been going through.
You have to be able to bend as an OL and so many OL are too stiff and never learn to do it naturally. Staying low is so key along with lower body stength and foot movement. My feet are so freaking big I'm lucky to find one pair or have to have special made as my cleats were. I had to practice in my game white cleats as my high school could'nt afford two pairs special made. In seventies wearing the Joe Namath White cleats everyday,lol.
To finish ... I'd say the journey has'nt totally ended if he can beat the pain level but you also risk another disc from rupturing. kinda like unzipping. I had the bottom three rupture. Two later on after the first and lowest (S-1 -L-5) ruptured. Second surgery was even worse. Your % of a success gets lower with each successive back surgery. I could still bench heavy eventually but the excersizes you need to do heavy like squats were just too much for me. Felt like I was gonna explode or bust inside. Not to mention the pain after the reps . Most men would puke. So I don't envy what Jones and family are going through. Kudo's to him for everyday more he keeps his dreams alive. He visually does look like he needs a nutritionist as he has more baby fat still than he should at this point. On face,arms and his belly. Thought he would have access to the best advise from where and who he has been dealing with. (???)
I watched all the drafted centers in PS and Finney was a major surprise cut to me and have already posted we should have brought him in.(especially when they lost their starter Pouncey for a very long time) Surprisingly Dismukes did'nt suck but was'nt the size or player Finney could be with help. Finney is as good as Jones is right now and thats without injury and an offseason to grow like a pro and truly get better. Fisher wants versatility in HIS players. I want a pure center like we had in the past that played 8 years on average for us (Iman,Saul,Smith)14 Pro Bowls and 20+ years for the RAMS. I want a true real Pivot man. Sorry I disagree with Fishers approach. I get it folks get hurt and if you lose your true center than you have to replace with what? We had (5) centers go down in PS last year. Wichmann can play OG & C for us. I think he is a future starter for us. No way to stop it. So glad he is finally well and it was'nt a Jones type injury. NO INJURIES !!!

Don't know but I think Rhaney is our 5th OG and 2nd (C). Versatility and being better than Jones was his only saving grace. Jones was hurt with back and soft. Rhaney is quick but a little small at 6'2" and not sure he weighs 300lbs without his dreads. Plus still has baby fat on belly. Not impressed . Stay well Tim Barnes. NO INJURIES.
Which makes for a great sound bite...... The only issue with that is failing to account for the injuries that those players were dealing with.
Jones had BACK SURGERY on August 8th. He was rendered incapacitated for EIGHT WEEKS. Meaning he couldn't lift a weight, run 10 feet for that entire time. These guys workout incessantly to get ready for the season. In that amount of time all the wok he did to "change his body and get stronger" in the off season was for naught. While he made it back to the "active roster" in late October, there was no way he was in any shape whatsoever to be a full time player.
Barnes was dealing with injuries throughout the season. Injured neck in training camp. Injured shoulder then bruised ribs.
It was never about them not being "good enough" to beat out Wells. It was all about being healthy enough.

They say that misery loves company but a lesser known saying (no, not "Never get involved in a land war in Asia") is, "it's not how crazy we are, but how much we enjoy it that makes us dangerous." (Ren and Stimpy) It's good being dangerous isn't it.
That would presuppose that they were put back on the field by Fisher before they had completely healed. Risking both their long term and short term future with the Rams and in the NFL. While I don't know if that is correct or not, I chose to believe that neither they nor Fisher would risk that. You're healthy enough to play on special teams and do spot relief of Wells (Barnes) but not healthy enough to play the position during the rest of the game/season? Not buying that.
Furthermore, subsequent events have proven my contention to be correct. Of those healthy enough to play last year, only Barnes is still on the team and in addition to not being able to beat out Wells last year, he hasn't shown that he's anything but marginally better than Rhaney and Jones in TC and the preseason this year. As I've said before and as I still say, I feel that Barnes is merely the lesser of three evils.
Coach O was right on regarding Barnes and Jones. I thought Jones would be an all-pro, based on his college career, but I guess Barnes outplayed him. When they saw that Rhaney could play guard, that probably doomed Jones.
I never said they weren't "healthy". I know you know the difference between being able to perform on special teams and to be able the perform at to level necessary as a full time player.
Wells was as much of an example of that as were Barnes and Jones. Everyone of them were banged up enough to have an effect on their play. There's also a huge difference between being "injured" and being less than 100%.
You can choose to believe what you want. I know what I know.
I'm so glad you are adding your voice again Coach. I know you told me privately things I think before OTA's even started and you were 100% right on everything you told me. I feel very priveleged this message board has you stopping by to steer the truth and I'm now a real believer. I only wish others were privy to all you said and predicted and ALL of them happened just as you said.
Please know how much you are appreciated from this guy that was an 8 year ORT and then managed Health Spa's all over the southeast after football using my appearance and body building knowledge to help men and women lose weight and add muscle. That was in the Hey Day of Health Clubs in America till there were too many everywhere trying for a piece of the pie.
Everyone I ever met knew I was a fanatic RAM's fan. I always set up a TV to be watched on the exercise floor on Sundays . Thats a major No No as no work gets done by all folks coming to get a workout in. I got complaints but did'nt care. I remember the Playoff game with the creamsicle Bucs that was the most low scoring playoff game I can remember as we headed for SB XIV.
Thanks again for adding the facts to all us fanatics. Hope to one day take you to your favorite spot in Louie after enjoying a Rams win in our new Riverside outdoor stadium. This team IS headed in the right direction for sure. Yes there will be bumps ahead but we are headed back to respectability and adding to it each year. Gonna watch Joey Bosa tonight as OSU verses VT and we'll see many top additions for next season to add to our young guns. Joey can give C. Long a breather while a muscled up Longacre can spot Quinn.
G. Rob. I know does'nt impress you at all but he's only had I think 9 games as an OLT and I'm A Believer he has Self Pride that will eventually kick in along with a challenge from Williams will be the kick in his large backside he needs. I'm most worried about penalties and this team and what it might take to correct this NONSENSE. We can't get there until it freakin stops. THANKS!!! NO INJURIES

I want nothing to do with Bosa. And don't get me wrong, Bosa is an elite talent...but we'll have to pick top 5 to top 10 in order to get him. I don't want the Rams picking within 10 spots of the top 10!
