Are the Jaguars making a mistake using Travis Hunter on both sides?

I think for the jags it will be a stupid idea, for anyone playing them it should be good. He will be exhausted if he plays both sides in any game.

Verse played both sides of the game. Has asked mcvay several times but just been brushed off.

Rams love mixing up roles but not playing both sides to my memory.

Well, in fairness, the Rams have had plenty of QBs in their history that try to keep both teams in the game....

I think the wear and tear on his legs will shorten his career. So if it was me, I'd tell him to choose a side and let's make you a Hall of Fame level player there first. Then down the road we work up packages to include you on the other side of the ball.

Also I would favor him at corner. But if he prefers wideout then play him where he chooses because you should get the most from him that way.

I agree about corner, because at WR he's very raw. Rounds off routes, has too many tells. He was good in college against lackluster big 12 competition but raw talent won't cut it in the NFL. Kupp won the triple WR crown on the strength of his technique alone. NFL CB's do nothing but watch tape of you for weeks in advance & see every tell you have. IIRC one of the reasons I read that we lost the SB vs the Pats in 2018 is that one of our WR's had a tell that told the D if it was a run play or not.
Hunter has a long way to go at WR, but not that far at CB. He oughtta just focus on CB this season, & then see about WR in 2026.

There is also a question of how do they maximize Hunters value as the second overall pick in the draft. I agree, it seems like in order to do that he should start out focused on playing defense.

That’s a part of the fun though. It will be interesting to see if he can pull off playing both ways. It will be impressive if he can and entertaining if he can’t….in a Jags kind of way

What percentage of snaps do some elite NFL players play? It ranges but weve seen guys play 60-70% of the snaps and be thought of as elite. If he plays 50% on both sides of the ball, that's enough to make a big impact on both sides. And other guys will need to be rotated in and out anyways, particularly at WR.

Not sure where you come up with that. Elite players are in the high 80's. Heck Aaron Donald was between 75-90% and another 10-20% of the ST snaps
#1 WR will take 85-93% of the offensive snaps (Justin Jefferson)
#1 CB will take 95-100% of the defensive snaps (Jalen Ramsey)

If they're smart, they focus on getting him ready at whichever position THEY see him excelling at quickest (ahem, CB), then bring him along at the other position.

However, I don't think Coen could lead bees to honey, so I am not convinced he will navigate this situation with any kind of dexterity. Also, I think Gladstone is a Temu version of McSnead. Fuck the jags....

Yeah I was not impressed with Coen as our OC. But if he's as smart as McVay thinks he is maybe he's accrued enough experience to run a good offense at this level. It does feel like a lot for him though, to run the whole thing. Reasonable chance he crashes and burns.

Gladstone seems sharp. If I was going to hire a GM this offseason I certainly would have looked at him. I don't hate what he did with the OL, and I think having stability up front is important to get his QB going. They have some weapons. Feels like their defense perennially underperforms and don't follow them or anything so no idea why.

They probably need another draft to fix that defense. But of course I am just spitballin here with casual observer goggles on.

I think the playing both sides comes down to two things.
How much time he gets meeting on each side of the ball.is he going to get the full install on both sides and get enough time with all the coaches? I don't know that they'll make him more than a nickle back most likely a dime back.

Also he is kind of slight of frame. He's physically gifted just not the stoutest player. Playing as much as some think he will might be too much for him to handle.

Some interesting points there to consider.

What if he’s just not that good at the pro level? At least not good enough to win a starting job despite only putting in half the time.
You’re team probably isn’t that good if that’s the case.

If he ends up no more than a nickel/dime back and a #3/4 WR, I suppose he CAN play both ways because he won’t be getting 50-60 snaps a game. How can he be more than that if he can’t commit 100% of his time to either position?

Steve Smith, the former Panther`s WR, said that he will end up playing one position because, "generalists don`t get paid in the NFL, specialists do".

That said, my guess is he ends up a full time starter on defense and a package player on offense with a limited route tree.

This is the norm in high school. There’s not enough good players on most teams to play only one side of the ball. Central Columbia is right up the road from me. They have similar enrollment as our school. Graduating classes are around 150 kids. Some teams we played didn’t have enough players for a JV team. Our entire roster was made up of two way players and we were one game away from the state championship.

We were 3A. One 5A school we played had guys only playing one side of the ball. They had 4 D1 college commits and we still beat them. At the end of the game the opposing coach came over to my son and said, “You wrecked our entire offensive game plan.” I’m going to miss those Friday nights.
