Now, I understand that the offense is flying high...but I wanted to give a shoutout to the D with this all-encompassing thread, since we already have a "2026 Rams Offense Thread".

Myles Garrett? Obviously a hell of a trade to get him. Agent Zero and Josaiah Stewart should be very happy with the Garrett deal, getting the easier one-on-ones, now that he's there. And you've got a lot of other young edge rushers. It'll be curious to see if Desjuan Johnson makes the team. I wonder if there's anything behind the scenes, because he's an awesome all-around player. And hey, we still have Wesley Bailey, whom I have high hopes for. Keir Thomas is still there, and I have to say that they must see something in him for him to stay this long on our team.

Inside linebacker is stacked. There's no other way to put it. Huge fan of Nate Landman, and I really want to see Shaun Dolac starting for us; his coverage skills are rare for a linebacker. Omar Speights is still the starter, and he's a dominant run-stopper. Maybe he learns to be better in coverage? Grant Stuard and Tomon Fox look to be special teams players, but they could be pushed by Elias Neal, Nikhai Hill-Green, and Darryl Peterson III.

The Conductor should also be happy with the Garrett trade. I doubt Fiske is, since his buddy, Verse went away. I have high hopes for him, but he has to stay away from the injury bug. And hey, maybe AD comes back for another run, at least, for this year? Poona Ford is rock-solid in the run game, and he'll be a key piece for us.

Also, I have to give a massive shoutout to the younger D-line: I still like Ty Hamilton a lot, Ty Davis has been awesome as a run stopper, and Tim Keenan III is an intriguing nose tackle type himself. And then there's Payton Zdroik, who is a very interesting three-tech at Air Force. Very undersized, but super productive, and he killed it (and beat the O-linemen lined against him like rented mules) at the American Bowl and at his Pro Day.

Bill Norton is huge (6'6", 336 lbs.), and Jaxson Moi, while not highly regarded as a collegian, was highly regarded in high school as a recruit. ...And I guess we have Larrell Murchison for at least another year.

And then we have the secondary. Oh my goodness, the secondary has been the most improved position group on the entire roster. If Emmanuel Forbes is your third cornerback, you're doing very well for yourself. Still have very high hopes for Forbes, by the way; he may not be the most physical corner (even though he's improved markedly), but if you're talking coverage and ball skills, there's not many corners who are better.

McDuffie is a versatile chess piece; you can line him up outside, in the slot, even as a safety or quasi-linebacker, he's excellent in coverage, great against the run, one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL today, and easily the most versatile.

Jaylen Watson is a great story: a former seventh-round pick out of Washington State, didn't play in 2019 because of academic reasons, and worked at a local Wendy's that was managed by his mom, while completing his coursework. He worked his way up the roster for the Chiefs and now he got rewarded with a huge contract. Here's hoping he lives up to it in a big way.

As far as other corners go, Cam Lampkin's entering his third year (and is still super young; he won't turn twenty-five until the 31st of July), Alex Johnson is a toolsy corner who's been on multiple practice squads, Al'Zillion Hamilton, Nyzier Fourqurean, and Drey Norwood (especially Hamilton) are intriguing and have the potential to maybe make the roster or be solid enough to put on the practice squad.

Quentin Lake, Kam Curl, Kamren Kinchens, Josh Wallace, and Jaylen McCollough? That's a solid safety group - and you still have Tanner Ingle, Nate Valcarcel, and Nick Andersen to consider.

Well, that was a lot of word salad, but I had to get my thoughts on all of the defense. You're more than welcome to yours, though!

Top 3 in scoring against or bust. As it pertains to Shula, barring injury of course.

And personally I expect that will happen. But then I think Shula is going to get better and better as a caller. Also looking back at Jimmy Lake's Washington stint where he had consecutive years of top scoring defense production, he was paired with a front seven source coach in Kwiatkowski. Shula is similar I think in what he should be able to produce with a strong pass game coordinator behind him.

I think we'll be somewhere from 5th in scoring to 1st. Hopefully the latter, and hopefully by a good margin. I'd like to see a ppg allowance of around 16. That plus McVay = title IMO.

Yes, I'm of the opinion, as good as our Offense is, and our past Offensive reputation has been, that it is our Defense that needs to win us the Title. Just like we coulda won in '25 if our Defense was just a little better.

I expect Myles Garrett 2nd Half of his career to mirror Matthew Stafford's. Hall-of-Fame-level player, many years toiling on a bad team, come to Rams, win a Title or two.

The last 2-3 years the Rams spent less on defense than every other team. Now with Garrett, McDuffie and Watson, and some extensions on the horizon, they will need the D to win some games on their own. I'm not necessarily saying they need shutouts (but it would be nice), but they'll need to get stops in the 4th quarters of games (Seattle in OT last year) to seal it or get the ball back to the offense (NFC title game) to win it. When Stafford is gone and Simpson is making relatively nothing then the Rams will have to win with their running game and D while Simpson gets better.

1st through 5th and 16 ppg is reasonable, but I gotta admit that with their talent, I'll be disappointed in Shula if they don't finish top 2.

I'll admit that I still wish they had upgraded inside linebacker (over Speights). That run play by Kenneth Walker made him look like a 9th grader out there.

But yes, love your message Jemma. We have a very deep and exciting defense this year!

There's a lot to like about our defense!!!

On Watson, I remember him starting 6 games his rookie year, as a 7th round draft pick!!! He's started and played in 3 Super Bowls. That kind of drive to start and experience can't be overstated.

What's amazing about this defense is the cost in 2026.
7 of our top 10 cap hits are on the offensive side of the ball. And the 3 from defense are Lake #6, Poona #7 and McDuffie #8. Garrett and Watson come in at #11 and #14 respectively. In fact 11 through 15 are defensive players (Curl #12, Landman #13 and Young #15). The top 20 are split evenly between offense and defense! It must be like a puzzle.

The cap man is smart.

Nice write up!!!

I want to see an attacking defense not a sit back and let Sam Darnold get comfy defense.

I think AD got tired of all the double/ triple teams. Played into him hanging it up.
He comes back and we will give the 85 Bears D line a run for their money.
Aaron has never, ever played with a guy like Garret. A player in the same league as himself.
Way better CBs and the D line we could have, almost unfair.
I can see Purdy and Darnold getting happy feet right now. (pick six)
And you know the Rams offense will put up points. Garret will be living his dream with AD at his side and a lead in the fourth many, many times.

Its nice to have a couple all pros out there on defense. But if you want a top tier defense you gotta have enough blue chip talent. I see a number of blue chip guys on that defense. McDuffie and Garrett are the cream of the crop. But you also have Young, Kobie, Fiske, Poona, Landman, Watson, Lake, Curl, Kinchens. All blue chip or above average type talent in my opinion. And some good rotational guys like Stewart, Johnson, McCollough, Forbes, Wallace. Stuard is a special teams ace but he can provide quality depth too.

Shula has a lot to work with. Talent is there. Depth is good. As the DC he did better than I expected. In the past I worried about the DC talent. I'm good with Shula. And don't underestimate McVay's hand in the defense. He's as smart as it gets. He turned a first time DC into a hot commodity and eventual head coaching job in Staley. And he'll probably do it again with Shula.

Then possibly one more addition. You all know who that is. The man. The myth. The legend. Aaron Donald.

Yes that was the whole point. He got tired of the triple teams. Then when it was rumored we might get Parsons he started considering coming back to be single teamed. Just like Garrett and now. He needs to do it.

I don't know all the players at the bottom end of the roster. I can see that the depth has improved over the past couple of seasons. I'm sure Shula is going to have a field day coming up with schemes to confuse offenses. The defense will be much tighter all around. Hopefully, the additions to help Special Teams pan out.

A healthy Fiske can have a big impact on the defense. The defensive line will have all shapes and sizes with a solid rotation to keep everyone fresh and healthy. Puna Ford will have some more help on the inside. There is going to a lot of competition for playing time on the D Line. Probably a lot of specialization moves that will wear down defenses.

Shaun Dolac can give Omar Speights a run for his money. Speights is great in very short yardage. He does have the quicks/speed to be as effective as you would want at the ILB position. It will be interesting to see who plays on 2nd/3rd and long. Could see a small DB moving up more.

We all know the CBs will be in a better position to stop third-down conversions. The defense on third down defense was a glaring weakness in recent years. Rams let up both third-and-short and long conversions at an alaming rated.

It almost seems like a lifetime ago since the Rams acquired the two aces from KC. Just like that, the secondary is loaded. I am curious to see how the Rams are gonna get all of that talent on the field at one time.
Kinchens, Curl, Lake, Watson, and McD all started last year.

Will the Rams be in a perpetual nickel Defense? Only one LB? Only two IDL? I see blitzes from the secondary because the talent is there to cover.

It would appear to me that if you can’t run on this defense, you’re cooked. That brings us full circle to the DL. Do the Rams have enough to go with Poona Ford who was outstanding last year?
I see big things for Tyler Davis this year. He played well when he got snaps last year, developing both phases of his game.

I’m not too concerned about the once porous pass D. It now becomes the ability to stop the run and force the pass that should pave the road to success for this defense.

I'm curious to see how many snaps Tim Keegan gets. He's a stout dude, taking on a lot of double teams so the LB's can eat.
