Ponds is not some Tye Hill who is afraid to put his body on the line and just so happened to be a Combine darling.

Yes, Ponds paced all corners with his vertical (fourth best ever from a cornerback). But he’s been an All-American for every one of his three years playing football in college (including as a freshman at James Madison before going to Indiana), has recorded at least nine passes defensed in all three years he’s played, has had a pick-six in both years at Indy, and whenever the Hoosiers needed a defensive play, even if it was a tackle for a loss (10.5 this year) or forced fumble (on Ty Simpson against Alabama, no less), it was Ponds delivering with physicality.

The closest comparison I have for him is Tyrann Mathieu, but as a cornerback, not a safety - and I don’t make that comparison to the OG Honey Badger lightly. If Ponds was two inches taller, even with his weight staying at 183 lbs., he would be an easy top twenty pick.

I normally wouldn’t take a chance on a small corner either, but Ponds is an easy exception to that rule.
He's comparable in size to Antoine Winfield Sr. and Brent Grimes. Ronde Barber wasn't much bigger. Ideally, we draft a bigger CB, but we can do a lot worse than Ponds.

Mathieu was an all-around defensive back in college (played corner and safety at LSU), albeit a safety or nickelback in the NFL. I feel there’s a very good chance he could’ve been that all-around corner/safety/hybrid DB, had he not had the off-the-field issues, particularly his with synthetic weed (because that shit will fuck up your body and mind just as much as

heroin or crack).

I’m saying Ponds’ big play ability, his physicality for his size, his athleticism, his ball skills, the alpha dawg in him, his entire playing style…that is what is giving me Honey Badger vibes.
No worries just mostly asking just I don't know much about Ponds honestly. I'm just extremely weary of someone not having the size to play these more physical WRs as not being a liability. I gotta watch this guy's tape to see what the fuss is about.

Seriously watch his tape - particularly the College Football playoffs. He matched up against Germie Bernard (Alabama), Carnell Tate, Jeremiah Smith (both Ohio State), etc. and more than held his own.

There is a reason I’m this high on Ponds.

The old adage…it’s not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog. But I agree size does matter in the NFL.
How about both - size WITH the fight/determination!

NFL receivers are a different level than college.

Still, not a bad outcome if it were to happen.
I'd rather Jamel Dean take Tutu's money. We'd have to add a few million but 10 mil would be the bulk of it.
Can you imagine what this D line could do pressures and sacks wise, if the Rams had 2 really good CB's holding tight coverage for just 1/2 a second longer? Dean would be a nice addition if the numbers etc worked out.
Still waiting to hear about the potential additional cap space being available with a few contracts being restructured.

I’m a big fan of Ponds, who plays bigger than his size. The only CB in college football that could cover Jeremiah Smith unlike some of those big CB’s on Tennessee.

Pat Thomas.
Rod Perry.
If Rod Perry was 2 inches taller or an inch or two longer reach, we might have won SB 14.

Still look at that secondary of the late 70's to early 80's as the best secondary players the Rams have had. From Pat Thomas, Perry, Monte Jackson, before them, Cromwell, Johnnie Johnson, a little after them, Elmendorf, Simpson, etc...

This thread is reminding me of the Cortland Finnigan (5'10"-ish) versus Andre Johnson (6'3") match

Honestly, my favorite Finnegan memory was him on the Rams pissing off a Washington receiver so much, that the receiver got a personal foul and won us the game.

Pity that everything else Finnegan did for us sucked.

Edit: Josh Morgan was the receiver.

Yep, that’s it. When RG3 was a rookie. We were close to losing that game, and Finnegan’s actions won it for us.

Hockey has terms for those kinds of players. Agitators. Rats. Pests.

Finnegan had to be one of the most effective kinds of those players to ever play in the NFL, and he was already very good, coming out of a small D2 school in the sixth or seventh round, not sure which at the moment, and I only have a shitty phone, so I’m not looking it up.

Again, it’s a shame that this was his best contribution for us.

I watched some tape and my only concern with him is he's pretty handsy. A few reps with J Smith from Ohio St he was pressing well past 5 yards which is holding in the NFL. Other than that, he definitely looks the part. He isn't scared to stick his nose in and can hit for his size. Not bad at all for sure. As usual, I'll trust the Rams to make the call there. However with that said, free agency gonna be a big teller on if we'll even focus on CB. If Ponds is going in the 2nd but we cover CB in free agency, I can see Rodriguez being a more useful pick. I'm only saying that since the defense would then be improved on all 3 levels compared to last year.

Honestly, I can see what you’re saying for free agency; we could very well use more money on players in the secondary on free agency and use a pick on Rodriguez, Trotter or Perkins.

But that goes into my earliest point about Forbes; he’s still young, was a really great cover corner for a fair stretch, is under contract for two more years, and if he’s not relied on to be the #1 corner, I think he could excel.

And that’s when you use that second round pick on Ponds or a third on Julian Neal (Arkansas) or Hezekiah Masses (California), for some examples, to help remake that secondary with younger players with potential.
