Rams Rookie OLB Daniel Hardy 'Has Flashed' at Training Camp

When the Los Angeles Rams traded for outside linebacker Von Miller last season, he provided a spark for the defense off the edge. Miller would become a key member of the Rams' defense, helping propel them to a victory in Super Bowl LVI.

In his eight regular season games with the Rams Miller amassed 31 total tackles, including five sacks, serving as a consistent rusher off the edge. However, with Miller off to play for the Buffalo Bills next season, the Rams will look internally to find a replacement.

One potential candidate to help fill some of Miller's production could be rookie Daniel Hardy out of Montana State, drafted by the Rams with the No. 235 overall pick. Hardy has shown potential in training camp so far, which has caught coach Sean McVay's eye.

“He’s done a good job. He's got great effort. You can see the athleticism," McVay said. "I think he's getting more and more comfortable with the things that we're asking him to do snap in and snap out."

"[Outside Linebackers Coach] Thad [Bogardus] is such a good coach with those guys to really be able to provide clarity when you’re going from outside linebacker to rush in and some of our sub packages. So, Daniel's a guy that definitely has flashed.”

While Hardy might not see much playing time as a rookie, his stats for Montana State show that he has a knack for getting to the quarterback. In 2021 Hardy racked up 77 total tackles, including a whopping 16.5 sacks.

As the Rams look to replace the loss of Miller this season, Hardy could very well play himself into a bigger role as the season progresses. Already possessing an ability to get to the quarterback, if he can refine the other areas of his game than he might just end up being a gem for the Rams.

I smell an elite ILB tandem.
McVay appears to have spent a great amount of time very early this off-season preparing to ensure that he will never have to deal with the 9ers running all day & all night through his defense any longer.

I think we need to wait for pads with all the linemen. This includes Hardy.

Knock on Hardy is that he's raw. He doesn't have a bunch of pass moves, so he needs to learn a lot of moves and counters that the Rams are going to teach him. Once he's got that stuff down we might have something, but I'm trying real hard to keep myself from getting too high on this guy during underwear sessions because he is an excellent athlete and should be standing out there.

One key that we'll have to watch for in those padded practices is his contain too. Raw guys who project as pass rushers generally will struggle at this level in the run game. But for the Rams purposes they can play Hollins on run downs and save Hardy for passing situations if he can master enough moves to where OTs won't stone him.

It's a pretty big deal if they hit on him. And generally what that means with the best late round pass rushers historically is you know you have something rather quickly. Granted I'm going off memory here with guys like Kevin Greene, Mecklenberg, etc., so maybe I'm wrong on that count. But if he stays hot as those pads come on then you're gonna see me getting excited. :startstruck:

Yeah we'll see how he does when oline can get physical with him. Overall, I'm happy to hear him, Lewis, and Garrett are all shining so far. Between those three and Hollins hopefully we can adequately fill the role opposite of Floyd.

One thing is for sure, training camp hype has me full on excited as hell to watch preseason games again! Next Saturday can't get here fast enough. So much talented youth on this team now.
