Al-Rasheed Benton

With the swift rise of nickel and dime personnel groupings as base defenses in the NFL, teams are in more need than ever of linebackers who can not only fire forward to stop the run but also credibly jump back into coverage against tight ends and slot receivers. Intelligent coverage is one of the many reasons that Georgia's Roquan Smith is seen as a foundational first-round talent.

Among the linebackers later in this class, it's tough to think of a better pure coverage player than Al-Rasheed Benton. At 6'1" and 235 pounds, he fits the physical prototype of the modern inside linebacker: quick to adjust to the ball, showing strength in the run game and moving smoothly in coverage.

He'll get beaten in strength battles with offensive linemen, but as is the case with all successful lighter inside linebackers, he's learned to adapt by waiting for gaps to open inside and moving quickly to stop run plays to the edge. That's how he racked up 13.5 tackles for loss and three sacks in 2017.

Perhaps more importantly for his NFL future, Benton looks like a natural in coverage. If his NFL team treats him as a dime linebacker in the Mark Barron or Deone Bucannon mold, he could be a special player in a flexible defense.

The L.A. Rams and Philadelphia Eagles announce a trade ...

Rams get DE Chris Long back so he can finish out his career and retire as a Ram while hunting another Super Bowl ring, and the Eagles receive 23 year old DE Morgan Fox.
As a Big Time Long Fan I love this Trade!!

And no way in heck would we trade Jamon Brown to a divisional rival.

Just is not happening.

This is a true fantasy mock :)

But I still love it.

True, if this was real it would be very doubtful these teams would be talking trade, but here we are better for it imo.

2017 Overall DE PFF grade for Chris Long - 82.5
Fox - 59.1

Long ranked #30 in the NFL, Fox ranked #101.

If fortunate, the still very young Fox will have a long career as a rotational player, Long comes in as a short term player to help bring the Rams a Super Bowl win. The Rams are in Super Bowl mode !

The Rams have now acquired OC/OG Ryan Groy & DE Chris Long by way of trade,
Edge Rusher Jeff Holland in the 3'rd round, and
OT/OG - Geron Christian & FS Tarvarius Moore in the 4'th round

I want 4 more players but only have 2 draft picks remaining, what's a poor boy to do ?
Are you trading him for the 2017 season? Because those stats are irrelevant for 2018.
Like i said, thank god it’s just a mock

Fact is nobody knows what our CAP looks like following the presumed soon to come re-signing of Aaron Donald. Instead of trading Jamon Brown I could have just as easily traded Saffold if it was just about the CAP savings, both Brown & Saffold could easily be lost to free agency next season, and i've purposefully traded for/drafted offensive linemen in this mock draft to insure against loss.
While 2017 'stats' are only for the year the player participated, it's pretty much how most players are judged the previous year, ... like 'what have you done for me lately', so inferring that 2018 is irrelevant would be true of every player in the league, although if you are asking if I believe Chris Long's 2018 stats will likely be better than Morgan Fox, my answer would definitely be in the affirmative. Sorry you don't like it, but i'm pretty sure Long has out-performed Fox every year they have both been in the league.

I'm with Dieter. I don't like the Brown or the Fox trades.

I'd rather have neither. :p

That's OK, for me it's about a slightly better than mediocre OG who will become a free agent next year, a guy not chosen by either McVay or Kromer, for a potential starting Safety if we also lose Joyner to free agency, ... we'd also have both Ryan Groy and Geron Christian competing at RG to start in 2018. I have no problem making that roster adjustment.

Like @jrry32 - I'm still at work (checking draft prospects) The Falcons need to plug a guy into the RG position that can open holes. Their line played well, but they've upgraded and got a little nastier at RG by using pick #126 on:

Cole Madison OG Washington ST

Overview
Madison's athletic ability, foot quickness and ability to sustain blocks on the move make him a desirable target for teams who want offensive linemen who can excel in space. A move inside to guard could benefit Madison, if he can add strength and play with better knee bend.
Strengths
Good athlete who excels as move blocker

  • Gets up field to lead the charge in screen game
  • Races to get feet into proper position on reach blocks
  • Establishes hand positioning early in rep
  • Won't stop working to get blocks sealed or turned out on run play

Christian isn't an OG. He's not big or strong enough to play inside in this scheme. Groy can probably be serviceable, but we need depth. That guy is perfect as depth. I disagree on Brown being slightly better than mediocre. He improved as the year went, he's still young, and I didn't notice any issues from him the second half of the year. IMO, he's an ascending player who we could have kept at a reasonable price after 2018. I don't like damaging our OL continuity, I don't like damaging our depth, and I don't feel that what we got was enough.

But this is your team. You get to run it the way you see fit.
